This search engine for Mastodon instances is based on a database that gets updated by our crawler every night (CET). Instances are considered new for 30 days after they are discovered. When an instance has not responded to our daily checks for more than 30 days it’s no longer considered in statistics and searches and it gets checked only on the first of the month, rather than daily, until it possibly responds again. “Random ordering” of results varies daily.
Default search criteria reflect our fondness for a decentralized and egalitarian Fediverse and our attempt to exclude instances accepting fascist, racist, sexist, ableist or sovereignist contents by marking them as noxious.
We currently count 11,156 Mastodon instances, with 9,253,966 users (836,424 active during last month) and 1,020,750,834 published statuses. [Show Threads moderation statistics]

Here are some basic rules for the instance:
- Anyone is welcome to open an account to use either as a personal account, or to run a bot.
- Do not use bots to abuse other people. Bots should punch up, not down.
- Open as many bot accounts as you like, but please do not abuse this privilege! Don't setup a bot farm or something like that.
- If you run a bot here, please be kind to the servers. If the instance starts to bog down, bots that are making excessive API calls will be disabled.
- Please be mindful of the tools that Mastodon provides to mask potentially troubling content from users. If appropriate, please use content warnings, and consider not placing your toots in the public timeline.
- The following types of content are forbidden, and posting them will result in immediate termination of your account:
- Sexual depictions of children
- Overt advocation of sexism or racism
- Untagged nudity, pornography and sexually explicit content, including artistic depictions
- Untagged gore and extremely graphic violence, including artistic depictions
- Stalking or harassment of other users, both on the instance and anywhere in the fediverse
- The following types of content are also prohibited and can result in your account being silenced, and possibly terminated:
- Excessive advertising
- Uncurated news bots posting from third-party news sources
- Unsolicited mentions of other accounts

Our Goal
This community is dedicated to providing a harassment-free experience for everyone. We do not tolerate harassment of participants in any form.
Applicability and Scope
This code of conduct applies to all of this community's spaces, including public channels, private channels and direct messages, both online and off. Anyone who violates this code of conduct may be sanctioned or expelled from these spaces at the discretion of the administrators.
Toward a Welcoming and Safe Environment
We hope to create an environment in which diverse individuals can collaborate and interact in a positive and affirming way. Examples of behavior that contributes to creating this sort of environment include:
- Using welcoming and inclusive language
- Being respectful of differing viewpoints and experiences

Anti-Harassment Statement
This community will not tolerate harassment of any kind. Examples of harassment include:
- Offensive comments related to gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, mental illness, neuro(a)typicality, physical appearance, pregnancy status, veteran status, political affiliation, marital status, body size, age, race, national origin, ethnic origin, nationality, immigration status, language, religion or lack thereof, or other identity marker. This includes anti-Indigenous/Nativeness and anti-Blackness.
- Unwelcome comments regarding a person's lifestyle choices and practices, including those related to food, health, parenting, relationships, drugs, and employment.
- Deliberate misgendering, using inappropriate pronouns, or use of "dead" or rejected names.
- Gratuitous or off-topic sexual images or behavior in spaces where they're not appropriate.
- Physical contact and simulated physical contact (eg, textual descriptions like "hug" or "backrub") without consent or after a request to stop.
- Threats of violence.
- Incitement of violence towards any individual or group, including encouraging a person to commit suicide or to engage in self-harm.
- Deliberate intimidation.
- Stalking or following - online or in the physical world.
- Harassing photography or recording, including logging online activity for harassment purposes.
- Sustained disruption of discussion.
- Unwelcome sexual attention.
- Patterns of inappropriate social contact, such as requesting/assuming inappropriate levels of intimacy with others.
- Continued one-on-one communication after requests to cease.
- Deliberate "outing" of any aspect of a person's identity without their consent except as necessary to protect vulnerable people from intentional abuse.
- Publication of non-harassing private communication.
- Jokes that resemble the above, such as "hipster racism", still count as harassment even if meant satirically or ironically.
If you have questions or concerns about these issues please feel free to message an admin or ask for an opportunity to explore the issue with a moderator and volunteers.
Reporting
If you think that an account on this instance is violating this Code of Conduct, or is doing something offensive or should be otherwise handled by the administrators, the easiest way to report them is to use the reporting tool that is part of Mastodon. You can do that using the 'Report' tool which is embedded in every toot:
If you would rather not use the reporting tool, if the harassment is happening outside of botsin.space, or if you have any other concerns, please contact the administrators via the methods listed at the top of this page. If the person who is harassing you is on the admin team, they will not be involved in handling or resolving the incident.
The admin team will respond to any complaint as promptly as possible we can. If you do not get a timely response (for example, if no admins are currently online) then please put your personal safety and well-being first, and consider logging out and/or contacting the admins by email at colin at muffinlabs dot com.
This code of conduct applies to our community's spaces, but if you are being harassed by a member of our community outside our spaces, we still want to know about it. We will take all good-faith reports of harassment by our members, especially the administrators, seriously. This includes harassment outside our spaces and harassment that took place at any point in time. The abuse team reserves the right to exclude people from the community based on their past behavior, including behavior outside of our spaces and behavior towards people who are not in this community.
In order to protect volunteers from abuse and burnout, we reserve the right to reject any report we believe to have been made in bad faith. Reports intended to silence legitimate criticism may be deleted without response.
Enforcement Process
Every code of conduct violation report will be treated with seriousness and care. If a member's immediate safety and security is threatened, an individual admin may take any action that they deem appropriate, up to and including temporarily banning the offender from the community. In less urgent situations, at least two admins will discuss the offense and mutually arrive at a suitable response, which will be shared with the offender privately. Whatever the resolution that they decide upon, the decision of the admins involved in a violation case will be considered final.
We will respect confidentiality requests for the purpose of protecting victims of abuse. At our discretion, we may publicly name a person about whom we've received harassment complaints, or privately warn third parties about them, if we believe that doing so will increase the safety of our members or the general public. We will not name harassment victims without their affirmative consent.
Consequences
Participants asked to stop any harassing behavior are expected to comply immediately. If a participant engages in harassing behavior, the administrators may take any action they deem appropriate, up to and including expulsion from the community and identification of the participant as a harasser to other members. At the discretion of the admins, or by request, one or more of the parties involved may request to discuss the violation and how to avoid similar situations in the future.

Short Version
We try to handle moderation ASAP, but we may not see reports for several hours. We will get to all reports though!
We're not a free speech absolutist, and there are instances available for that. We're not interested in Nazis, TERFS, or hate speech of any sort, which we will define at our sole discretion as moderators. No homophobia, transphobia, queerphobia, racism allowed.
This instance is meant to be a friendly, welcoming space to all who are willing to reciprocate in helping to create that environment.
Long Version
The following guidelines are not a legal document, and final interpretation is up to the administration of tech.lgbt; they are here to provide you with an insight into our content moderation policies:
- The following types of content will be removed from the public timeline:
- Excessive advertising
- Uncurated news bots posting from third-party news sources
- Untagged nudity, pornography and sexually explicit content, including artistic depictions
- Untagged gore and extremely graphic violence, including artistic depictions
- The following types of content will be removed from the public timeline, and may result in account suspension and revocation of access to the service:
- Racism or advocation of racism
- Sexism or advocation of sexism
- Discrimination against gender and sexual minorities, or advocation thereof
- Xenophobic and/or violent nationalism
- The following types of content are explicitly disallowed and will result in revocation of access to the service:
- Sexual depictions of children
- Content illegal in Germany and/or France, such as holocaust denial or Nazi symbolism
- Conduct promoting the ideology of National Socialism
- Any conduct intended to stalk or harass other users, or to impede other users from utilizing the service, or to degrade the performance of the service, or to harass other users, or to incite other users to perform any of the aforementioned actions, is also disallowed, and subject to punishment up to and including revocation of access to the service. This includes, but is not limited to, the following behaviors:
- Continuing to engage in conversation with a user that has specifically has requested for said engagement with that user to cease and desist may be considered harassment, regardless of platform-specific privacy tools employed.
- Aggregating, posting, and/or disseminating a person's demographic, personal, or private data without express permission (informally called doxing or dropping dox) may be considered harassment.
- Inciting users to engage another user in continued interaction or discussion after a user has requested for said engagement with that user to cease and desist (informally called brigading or dogpiling) may be considered harassment.
These provisions notwithstanding, the administration of the service reserves the right to revoke any user's access permissions, at any time, for any reason, except as limited by law.
Content Warnings and Sensitive Media
Our Content Warning (CW) policy is intended to make our server comfortable for our community. We are not trying to silence our community or police discussion, but ask that you consider those who may read your posts when making them.
Content Warnings are a feature of Mastodon that enable you to hide the body of a "toot" (post) behind a line of text. The intended use of this feature is to provide a way to discuss sensitive and/or potentially harmful topics without causing duress or harm to anyone who might stumble upon it, though content warnings may be used for a wide variety of reasons.
Images can be marked as sensitive. This is a feature which hides an image until a warning banner is clicked. Images may be marked as sensitive separately from Content Warnings, though using a Content Warning automatically marks the toot's images as sensitive.
Please note that our sensitive media rules apply to profile photos and headers as well. Since those images cannot be hidden behind sensitive media warnings, they are not allowed to contain content from enforced content warnings.
We cannot enforce content warnings on users from other instances, but can help to manage content that you see when reported to instance moderators.
Please be clear and accurate when labeling content warnings, to ensure that they follow both the letter and spirit of the enforcements that we have.
Above all, try to be polite, and come from a place of mutual respect when discussing content warnings with other. We do not condone tone policing, and want to promote healthy discussion in our community.
This cannot ever be a complete list, and so we want to keep it semi-general, and reserve the right to use the judgement of the moderation team to make decisions in the future.
- Enforced Content Warnings:
- NSFW/sexual discussion and imagery must be behind descriptive CWs (nudity, sex, kink discussion, etc)
- Sensitive imagery (please use your best judgement on what content that most other users would find sensitive, such as photos of surgeries, abuse, war, deceased individuals, etc)
- Suggested Content Warnings:
- Discussion of overtly political (relating to elected or unelected government officials) topics
- Triggering topics (direct discussion of rape, trauma, abuse, suicide, transphobia, homophobia, etc). The intention is to provide a warning for users who may not want to consume this content, not to silence users who are sharing their negative experiences.
- Drugs or drug use
- Advertisements for corporations
- "Rage" posts and posts using mainly capital letters
- Suggested Sensitive Image Marking
- Eye contact images
- Food related images
CryptoCurrency/NFTs
We do not allow the promotion, advertisement, or sale of cryptocurrencies on our instance. Mentioning the existence of cryptocurrencies, linking personal accounts or addresses, and otherwise discussing them in a way that is not intended to sell or advertise a specific cryptocurrency is acceptable. We do not have any association with any cryptocurrency or other monetary transactions that happen within the server.
We do not allow the promotion, advertisement, or sale of NFTs on our instance. We do not allow content from our instance, including content and media uploaded by our community members, to be sold as NFTs.

The only nefarious intent here are those who have used this information when public to harass individuals and the instance as a whole. Bluntly, if those are the people that you want to interact with, you should probably join their instance instead.

- Discrimination & Bigotry Won’t Be Tolerated. We're not a free speech absolutist. We're not interested in Nazis, TERFS, or hate speech. Targeted misgendering, deadnaming, or promotion of so-called "conversion therapy" is prohibited.

About Dice Camp
We're a Mastodon server for RPG folks to hang out and talk. Not owned by a billionaire.
We don't want your attention or your clicks. We're not the One TTRPG Network To Rule Them All. Just a place for people who enjoy tabletop RPGs to talk about stuff, not at all limited to games.
Why Join?
There's two parts to that: why Mastodon and why Dice Camp?
Why use Mastodon?
As an open distributed social network Mastodon provides some of the things you might like in a social network but with interests more aligned with your own.
A for-profit social network wants to drive profit through increasing usage and ads as far as possible.
Mastodon isn't owned by anyone. Nobody is going to try to show you ads or maximize engagement.
Why join Dice Camp?
Since Mastodon is distributed you can join any instance and connect to anyone else (except those blocked by admins, more on that below), so it doesn't matter all that much which instance you join. Think of it like email: you could have a GMail address or an Outlook address or both or more than that and still exchange messages with anyone else.
The factors to joining a given server are:
How many people are on the server? General purpose servers may end up with more signups and have trouble staying stable when, say, a billionaire buys Twitter.
Does the server have a topic that relates to your interests? While you can connect with anyone the folks on the same server will generally be easier to discover via trends or the server-wide "local" feed.
Does it have a cool name? Look, there's nothing wrong with choosing the one that sounds the coolest.
- No racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia.
- No harassment or dogpiling.
- Do not share intentionally false or misleading information.
- Violent or sexually explicit media must be marked as sensitive when posting.
- Do not publish others’ private information, such as a physical or electronic address, without explicit permission.

About Fediscience.org
FediScience is a social network for publishing scientists. Everyone is welcome to join from PhD student to professor, as well as researchers from outside of academia. You are welcome to stay afterwards, but it is also easy to change to another server.
There will be a lot of science talk on this server, but there is no need to only talk science.

About the registration process
FediScience is a community for active scientists. Establishing the exact definition of "science" and who is actively contributing to it is a long-standing open problem (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demarcation_problem).
Therefore, we need to fix a criterium. We have opted to assume that researchers currently publishing in scientific journals are active scientists, knowing the potential limitations of this definition. To register on FediScience, you'll need to provide us with evidence that you are working as a publishing scientist or aspiring to be one, by sending us a link to your ORCID, academic web page, or similar where we can see your contributions. We will not save or use this information for anything other than the verification process. For students or junior researchers who have not yet published a paper - no problem! Just explain your situation. It will help us if you can add a link where we can see that you are affiliated with a research institution.
Other edge cases will be moderated on an individual basis. If you really think that you are a good match for the FediScience community, please apply and carefully explain your situation.
Code of conduct
As many people as possible should feel welcome at FediScience, so please follow the code of conduct.
- You do not have to give your name, but please tell us about your expertise and interests in your bio and introduce yourself using the #introductions hashtag.
- Don’t do anything that’s illegal in Germany or where you live.
- We want to be inclusive; do not engage in exclusionary behaviour or language. Consider not only the current interaction, but how it would be if your behaviour were common.
- Don’t harass people. Respect it if people want to stop an interaction. Sexual attention can constitute harassment, even if it wasn’t intended to cause upset.
- Please relax. Don’t assume you know better than the person you’re talking to.
Users violating these rules may have their accounts suspended and will not be welcome to take part any more.
If you are subject to or observe any harassment, or have any other concerns, please report the toot concerned or message a moderator. Reports will be dealt with discreetly and in confidence.
We want everyone to have a great time and treat each other with respect.
Use of the Content Warning (CW) feature
Mastodon has Content Warnings, please use them. They can be used to collapse a long (series) of messages, but also to hide topics some may find upsetting, especially when people would not expect this kind of content in your stream, e.g., when you are not talking about your area of expertise.
At the bottom of the message editor you can click the "CW" button; anything in the small warning field above your larger message editor field will be visible. The reader will have to click on "Show more" to see the full message.
Use of bots and cross-posters
It is fine to use apps or services which generate toots automatically, but please make sure that you have them under control: make sure they are relevant, try to limit it to a few posts a day. Mark the account as bot. When using bots and cross-posters visit FediScience regularly, if only to interact with replies.

- When signing up, you need to verify you're a scientist! Please provide a link to your ORCID, Scholar, or academic webpage, showing your recent publications. (Junior) researchers without publications, please tell us why you want to join.
- Discrimination in any form (including, but not limited to sexism, racism, homophobia, transphobia...) is strictly prohibited on the platform.
- Harassment, doxxing, or other abusive practices are not allowed.
- Posting of content illegal in Germany or the EU is not allowed.
- The intentional spreading of disinformation (“fake news”) is not allowed on the platform.
- No sexually explicit or violent content allowed.
- No incitement of violence or promotion of violent ideologies.
- Promotion of pseudoscience is also not allowed.
- Respect the Fediverse etiquette: use content warnings for sensible content and describe your uploaded images using alt text.
- So that we can moderate the instance, content has to be in a language for which free machine translation (e.g. Deepl.com) is available.

A Mastodon instance for Rubyists & friends
Registration policy update: It seems like the previous threshold for new accounts -- writing anything sensible in the "reasons for joining" section -- is no longer sufficient. So in order for your account to be considered, please ensure to write something about why you think Ruby.social is the right instance for you. If you just want a Mastodon account, you should probably sign up at one of the larger instances instead.
This Mastodon instance is for people interested in Ruby, Rails, and Ruby-related topics, AKA #matztodon 😄
For anyone who's interested in or working with Ruby, or related technologies. We want to be a friendly community of communities, discovering new people and welcoming them into the happiness that is programming with Ruby :-)
Discussions don't need to be about Ruby, but you'll get more out of this instance if that's one of your interests.
We take a strong stance against spam, and are moderating all signups. We are not anti-company or anti-promotion, but either applies to you, you will need to demonstrate your relevance to the community. This minimal barrier exists purely to stem the tide of spam accounts and profiles we've seen -- all genuine people and companies are otherwise welcome.

Blocked instances
We block some other instances. The full list is available to our users and we welcome feedback and suggestions. There are plenty of "Free Speech Zones" on the internet, but this is not one of them, and this instance will not openly federate with instances self-describing in that way.
Companies and random accounts
We want ruby.social to be a useful and interesting place principally for people to interact and post. For that reason, our default position is that companies and random user accounts that are (in the judgement of the moderators) posting content not relevant to our community will be politely asked to move their accounts to other instances. There is a place in the Fediverse for every account, but that place might not be this instance.
This doesn't apply to all companies; all accounts are warmly welcome as long as they are relevant (e.g. a product or development company that is connected with Ruby), show clear intent to engage with the community, and of course that they adhere to the specific rules below (particularly w.r.t advertising).
Handling harassment
If you are being harassed, please report the user using the "…" button and then "Report." For urgent concerns, please DM a moderator.
If you engage in harassing behavior, the moderator may take any action they deem appropriate, such as a warning or an expulsion.
The above rules may change at any time, and you may be banned at any time based on the moderators' judgment.
Privacy policy
What will we do with your data? Nothing. How will you be influenced by advertisers? You won't; brands and non-humans (other than fun/useful bots) are banned. How will we aggregate your data in order to improve your service… none of that.
We will never share your data with anyone else, except in the case of valid legal requests if it comes to that. (Hopefully it won't come to that!)
More privacy measures on ruby.social:
- EXIF data (GPS location, date, camera type, etc.) is stripped from images and never stored.
- HTTPS is used everywhere.
- No ads or trackers.
- Links are direct URLs rather than tracking redirects.
Understand though that this instance is run by me and my friends, and (as is the case with all Mastodon servers) we potentially have access to your data, including DMs. The back-end is also not encrypted. If this is not okay with you, this might not be the instance for you.
Also, for truly private data sent between two people, Mastodon offers no E2E encryption. So use Signal or WhatsApp for the things you really want to be private.
Discussion and Feedback
For questions about policy, bots, design, theming, etc., please refer to our discussions GitHub repo.
- No bots ... unless they're cute, funny, or useful. Bots should avoid posting to the public timeline.
- No pornography or nudity, or something that would be considered "NSFW" in a workplace, even behind a NSFW warning. In particular, no sexual depictions of children.
- No gore or graphic violence. Again, if you wouldn't post it at work, you definitely shouldn't be posting it here.
- Use content warnings. Content that is borderline NSFW or could be construed as NSFW at a glance should be put behind a CW (Content Warning)
- No racism. This should go without saying, but unfortunately it doesn't.
- No sexism ... or pretty much any other -ism
- No discrimination. Any discrimination based on gender, sexual minority, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, ethnicity, religion (or lack thereof), or national origin, will result in your account and content being removed.
- No xenophobia. This includes violent nationalism.
- No holocaust denialism. No Nazi symbolism, promotion of National Socialism, or anything that is illegal in the European Union
- No stalking or harassment of any kind
- No fake accounts, even celebrity joke accounts. Note this rule does not necessarily apply to remote accounts.
- No "follow bots." We block these and our instance is on a "no bots" list
- No advertising or excessive promotion. By far the biggest problem we've had running this server are spam accounts that sign up only to promote some company (often nothing even to do with Ruby), and so we take a fairly strong stance against letting such accounts even register on the server now.
