Mastodon Transit Authority builds community and solidarity. We welcome those interested in building thriving communities online and in real-life throughout the Puget Sound Region. We are organizers, nerdy about transit, renters, union members, tech workers, musicians, neighbors, climate activists, mutual aid participants; we are passionate about mobility justice, a right to housing, and cross-race / cross-class / cross-generational / intersectional communities. We endeavor to welcome anyone making a long- or short-term stay here, and make this instance your home.

Code of Conduct

We want people to be curious. To ask questions rather than start with accusations. We also want people to recognize power dynamics and lived experience in terms of their expectations in engaging in online spaces, as they would in face-to-face spaces. If you don’t already practice progressive stack in communities you are in, please take some time to learn what that means and how to implement it. It goes a long way to reducing harm when you’re just starting to build community in person, and online.

We will take swift and clear steps to reduce harmful behaviors. We know harm will happen and we want to make sure you can get help when it does. Moderators on this server will move quickly and seek out additional supports to remove and deter accounts that:

Espouse, or sealion ideals destructive to other people’s well-being, including but not limited to:

Violence, racism, classism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, anti-semitism, fascism, ecofascism, ethno-nationalism, settler colonialism, religious extremism, neurotype supremacy

Carry out online behaviors that harm, or emotionally exhaust other people:

harassment, brigading (including posts that may encourage others to harass), sealioning, doxxing (weaponization of private information disclosure, such as disclosing or publicizing addresses, email, phone numbers, medical history, private identifying information, etc without consent), spamming, slander, spreading misinformation/disinformation, privacy and consent violations (taking screenshots of “locked” / private-to-follower posts and sharing them publicly without the author’s consent)

Denial of service, proper server operation, and other members’ content readability, including:

Running automation or bots in a way that overloads the server, or is unpleasantly noisy for other users

This server is hosted in Washington state, United States and content must not violate local laws.

99% of the time, these rules will not be needed because the people here and in the broader community will be awesome. There's always the chance they aren't, so we have rules. Finally, if you run into a problem, reach out to an admin! Someone can probably fix what ails the server or tell you what's going on.

Technical Safety and Privacy

Because of how Mastodon works, no stored communications here are encrypted. Even things that appear private to you, like direct messages or restricted account posts, are not private relative to the server administrators. Server admins are not allowed, by rule of the server owner, to read this content; however this is enforced only by rule. The admins will treat your data with respect and privacy but if you want to make certain no one is able to see your communications with another person, consider other alternatives such as Signal.

While the instance is backed up regularly, please keep a copy of your own data in case the worst happens.

Moderators and Advisors

This instance has six volunteer administrators and moderators who tend to the server, the software, and keeping posts flowing that are consistent with our rules and values. These folks are, in order by user name: @analogist, @Andres4NY (an admin for the underlying server host and not the instance), @danielhep, @kona, @oowm, @rachael. We will do our best to keep an eye on things, particularly abuse reports. There might be a delay in replying if something major happens or if one or all of us are away.

Sister server to @religious.social which specifically hosts clergy, religious, and seminarians.

This server and all on-site infrastructure are operating on 100% solar power.

We welcome everyone from the ska, punk, reggae, rocksteady, new wave, or other related music fandoms. We are also proud proponents of the Ska Goth Alliance.

"Do I have to talk about only ska?" No! While Skastodon exists to serve the ska community, you can talk about whatever is on your mind (as long as you follow our server rules). We have friends on many servers with many interests, and would never limit conversations to just one topic.

Features

Mobile App 📱

Because Mastodon is built on the Rails framework, there is a very niffy feature available to users with a smartphone. Instead of downloading an app from your phone's play store, when viewing the website in a browser on your phone, open up the Browser Settings and select "Send to Home". This will put an app icon on your home screen that is an app for this instance, fully contained, and taking up only a few KB on average. You'll get the same control you get as on a desktop or in an app, without the hassle.

That said, there are several apps available for mobile phones, and they have not been tested with this server configuration. Your mileage may vary.

Profile 👤

There is more profile text space available then a normal Mastodon profile, so fill it up with stuff about you! Traditionally, Masto users put in the preferred pronouns, some hobbies they like, a few emoji, that sort of stuff.

Your profile picture and header image can include animated gifs as well!

Account Verification ✅

You can now also show your ownership of other online sites and profiles by adding a link that includes the rel=me meta code! For twitter, this is as simple as putting your Mastodon Profile page in the website field in your twitter profile, and your twitter profile in one of your mastodon profile fields! For other websites, check your Profile Edit page for more detailed instructions.

Posting 💬

The post length is set to 500 characters.

We ask that you enable Sensitive Media on all uploads by default in your profile settings, out of respect for our neighboring instances. If and image you want to share is Safe For Work and does not include any gore, genitalia, or explicit acts (could it be on TV?), then feel free to disable the sensitive filter for that image!

Emoji 😀

In addition to the standard emoji you might see on your phone, we have the ability to add custom emoji, similar to what you might see in a Discord server or Telegram stickers. You can add these to a post by opening the Emoji picker or adding the shortcode in the format of :emoji_name: with colons at each end of the emoji name. If you spell it correctly, you should see some recommended emoji pop up automatically.

Only admin may upload or copy these from other Mastodon Instances. If you see an emoji on Mastodon and would like to use it yourself, follow these steps:

Start a Reply to the post that contains the desired emoji
Set the Privacy of the reply to Direct Message
Remove any other @People from the reply and add @Taris (your admin)
Mention that you would like this emoji added to Gulp Cafe
Wait
Once i see the DM i'll add the emoji and it will show up in the Emoji Picker

Timeline Flooding

In order to keep the best user experience, we ask you not to send like twenty toots in two minutes (exemplification) as people want to be able to see more than just one user in their timelines.
Of course we understand and may do an exception for critical reasons of yours like a kind of serious emergency situation for example.

Your account must not be used as a sole mirror of some other platform: by having an account on this server, the team and fellow users expect to interact with – and read from – a real and authentic person. We understand that you might want to also crosspost from other platforms, but we also ask you to not do that exclusively.

social.tchncs.de does not believe in censorship.
