niagara.social is a Mastodon+Hometown instance that hopes to be a social hub for the region of Niagara, Ontario, Canada. The hope is that we will build a safe, inclusive, fun and useful place for those in the region who want to still be social online without being forced to use private software that makes them feel bad.

This instance aims to be an anti-racist, anti-fascist, anti-colonial space and will not tolerate behaviours that are flatly racist, sexist, transphobic, homophobic, ableist, misogynistic, or otherwise bigoted.

Additionally, do not post any illegal content, or talk about illegal acts, or otherwise post anything that could cause legal trouble for the server (where your images and posts live).

niagara.social is always a work-in-progress (but right now it's really a work-in-progress).

Here's where we are: [-] get instance online [ ] consult with organizers and members on rules, a code of conduct, blocklists, new members, etc.. [ ] figure out governance/decision-making [ ] figure out long-term funding (currently paid for by Kostyn, but it's very affordable) [ ] figure out "hit-by-a-bus plan" (get other folks involved in the technical maintance of the site)

This is a general-purpose Mastodon server administrated in the Greater Boston, Massachusetts area. All are welcome to sign up, so long as the rules are followed.

We federate with Threads, some do not. Read our Threads FAQ.

We use Cloudflare to block artificial intelligence (AI) bots, crawlers, and scrapers from scraping your content for training large language models (LLM) to recreate posts without your permission.

While most Mastodon servers are limited to 500 character posts, here posts can be up to 12,000 characters because we think you have important things to write.

We also relay with over 1,500 other servers, some very large. This means we share each other's posts and accounts in real time. Your posts go to those servers immediately, even if there are no follow relationships. Servers without relay relationships only share posts when there are follow relationships. Your audience is large here, and you see more posts than you would on servers that do not relay.

You can see the incoming messages arriving here from all over the Fediverse from the relay by going to our Live feed

We do not secretly shadow-ban our own users ("limit" or "silence"). We will always notify the account owner of the action and the reason.

Important to know to get the most from Mastodon, is to understand the difference between hashtag use on Twitter and on Mastodon.

You can follow hashtags in Mastodon so that any posts visible to this server that have the hashtag, will appear in your timeline. You don't have to search for a hashtag as you do on Twitter.

Therefore, using hashtags in Mastodon is important if you want people in other instances to see your post. And it's a great way to be discovered and to discover other interesting people.

You can follow a hashtag by clicking on it within a post and then clicking the "+" in the top-right corner.

On this server, the maximum number of characters in a post is 12,000. The Mastodon default is 500, but I bumped it higher. Also, note that a URL in a Mastodon post always counts as 23 characters, regardless of its true length. URL shorteners are not required for Mastodon posts.

This server prohibits posting Child Sexual Abuse Materials (CSAM). Images are actively scanned. Their mathematical hashes are compared to the hashes of known CSAM images in the NCMEC.ORG database. Any matches are automatically reported, and the image is blocked. Nobody, nor any software, looks at the actual images, it's just a mathematical calculation on the bits.

About us

The Gamer's Tavern is a cozy community talking mainly about gaming but not disdaining other topics, fully committed to the Fediverse and owned by Alex and backed by an amazing staff.

The main goal of the community is providing gamers a cozy and safe home to play together.

The Gamer's Tavern won't ever feed you ads or sell your data, we are against all those BSs and that's why we are active only on Fediverse social medias (Mastodon, Pixelfed, Lemmy, Peertube, Owncast, etc. see the complete list here).

We just want to play together, have fun and being cozy

What The Gamer's Tavern will do for you

The instance's staff promise to do the following:

Moderate and facilitate any issues that come up - no issues will be skipped. We will strive to always come to the most equitable and fair decision we can, when it comes to community disputes and infractions.
Never ever spy on our users or viewers, sell their data, or monitor personal communications;
Never ever add ads to this instance, there's no need for paying although donations are highly welcomed;
Keep the spam down from garbage instances, and federate with other great instances

This instance will be self hosted as long as it's possible. Being a community fully committed to the Fediverse means we don't get any money from shady activities like selling data, your data.

We live and we grow through your help.

The Gamer's Tavern chose a full Fediverse approach and all the donations will be used to maintain servers and get better hardware. Oh, and let's not forget about fueling the staff with more coffee, so why don't you buy them a Ko-Fi?

The Wikimedia Foundation is the nonprofit organization that operates Wikipedia and other Wikimedia free knowledge projects. Our vision is a world in which every single human can freely share in the sum of all knowledge. We believe that everyone has the potential to contribute something to our shared knowledge, and that everyone should be able to access that knowledge freely. We host Wikipedia and the Wikimedia projects, build software experiences for reading, contributing, and sharing Wikimedia content, support the volunteer communities and partners who make Wikimedia possible, and advocate for policies that enable Wikimedia and free knowledge to thrive.

The Wikimedia Foundation is a charitable, not-for-profit organization that relies on donations. We receive donations from millions of individuals around the world, with an average donation of about $15. We also receive donations through institutional grants and gifts. The Wikimedia Foundation is a United States 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization with offices in San Francisco, California, USA.

This instance, as well as the official Mastodon account, is managed by the Wikimedia Foundation’s Product & Technology Department. The instance will be primarily used as a space for people to connect and talk about tech related topics. We will also experiment with content about the Wikimedia movement and projects that might be appealing to tech enthusiasts and fans of open-source platforms.

This is Port87 Social, a place for people to share with each other. We are a general-purpose Mastodon server.

We are run by SciActive Inc, based in California. Our servers are located in California, and maintained by Digital Ocean (no affiliation).

We follow the Mastodon Server Covenant.

We block a number of instances that allow content that is contrary to our rules. The list of blocked instances is available to our registered members.

Regole dell’istanza

No hate speech. This include slurs and hateful tropes about marginalized groups.
You must be 16 or older to access this server. This is not a place for kids.
Do not harass other users. Disagreements and spirited or even heated discussion is fine, but brigading, doxxing, threatening, or engaging in other harassing behavior is not.
Do not post illegal content. (Anything that would be considered illegal under the laws of the USA.)
Do not post photographs or artwork depicting minors in a sexually suggestive nature.
If you want to host a bot on this server, it must be approved by either @hperrin or @dave first.
Pornography and excessive gore are allowed if and only if you mark the media as sensitive.
Do not threaten anyone with violence. This includes other users, non-users, public officials, and celebrities.
