Everyone who feels like they fit our environment is welcome, although this is an instance for queer, furry or tech people, anyone is welcome as long as they're respectful.

Management and Rules

Our server rules are made to provide a guideline on how to behave on our instance, please check them when unsure about something. The rules may change from time to time, if noteworthy changes are in effect this will be communicated through announcements.

As this server is predominantly queer, we have a zero-tolerance policy for hate (especially homophobia and transphobia). If you feel like this may clash with your personal beliefs we'd prefer you finding a different instance.

Questions about our rules are always appreciated, don't hesitate to contact an Admin if anything is unclear.

Instance maintainability

I (@Purple) consider it important for an instance to be flexible and maintainable. Users of our instance rely on it being available and staying available in the foreseeable future and any doubt of this may hurt trust in this instance.

Because of this when setting up this instance I've made sure it's scalable, with minimal effort we can easily scale up to support thousands of users without major upgrades to how the infrastructure is set up.

Our current setup looks like this:

Server hosting:

We're currently hosting our instance on Hetzner's Cloud service. This allows us to easily scale up the amount of CPU cores or memory with downtime of less than a few minutes.

Our servers are located in Finland, Europe and currently exist out of 3 VMs for future-proofing and scalability. They have a combined 8 CPU Cores and 14GB of ram.

We can reasonably scale the main server up to 16 cores + 64GB ram before we should look into other options, it's unlikely we'd need to make major changes to our architecture until we hit a few thousand active users or more.

I'm a Linux System Administrator by trade with experience with scaling and optimisation, so this instance strongly benefits from my personal experience in this field :)

Storage hosting:

For our storage of both our user and cache content we use our own S3 solution hosted in The Netherlands. For database backups we use Scaleway's S3.

Using S3 means we can more easily move our server around if this happens to be needed, making a migration quick and painless. It also offloads the responsibility of serving image and video content away from our main server.

Our storage location for image and video content is The Netherlands both for user and cache content, our storage location for backups is France as Scaleway offers additional data redundancy there.

CDN hosting:

Making sure our instance stays fast and responsive, we make use of Bunny.net's CDN service to serve our static image and video content. Especially users outside of Europe will benefit from this as it will provide significantly lower latency for popular cached content.

Data retention

Because of how federation works, your posts (even through deleted) may hang around on other servers. Although mastodon will inform those instances the post has been removed, we can't guarantee other instances successfully receive or honour this request. This rarely seems to be an issue, but it is something to keep in mind when posting anything to the internet.

When you remove a post the following happens on our side:

Text content

The post itself is removed from our database right away and is inaccessible for anyone including administrators. The only place it may stay around is our backups, which are permanently removed after 60 days. These backups are never accessed unless in a recovery scenario.

Timeline:

Image/Video content

Although the content is removed from our storage provider right away, it may stay available through our CDN for a prolonged amount of time for users who have the exact URL to the images. We're working on a solution to immediately remove the content from our CDN, but this currently is not possible.

The CDN will lose the content after it has not been accessed for a bit. However because the CDN caching servers will only remove content if it deems caching other files more important (more frequently accessed etc.), it is hard to tell the exact timeframe.

We will purge the cache a few times a year to allow all files to be refreshed, regardless of file popularity. However unless someone has been constantly refreshing the URL every couple of hours to keep it considered "HOT" on the CDN the file will be gone in a day.

Features

Mobile App 📱

Because Mastodon is built on the Rails framework, there is a very niffy feature available to users with a smartphone. Instead of downloading an app from your phone's play store, when viewing the website in a browser on your phone, open up the Browser Settings and select "Send to Home". This will put an app icon on your home screen that is an app for this instance, fully contained, and taking up only a few KB on average. You'll get the same control you get as on a desktop or in an app, without the hassle.

That said, there are several apps available for mobile phones, and they have not been tested with this server configuration. Your mileage may vary.

Profile 👤

There is more profile text space available then a normal Mastodon profile, so fill it up with stuff about you! Traditionally, Masto users put in the preferred pronouns, some hobbies they like, a few emoji, that sort of stuff.

Your profile picture and header image can include animated gifs as well!

Account Verification ✅

You can now also show your ownership of other online sites and profiles by adding a link that includes the rel=me meta code! For twitter, this is as simple as putting your Mastodon Profile page in the website field in your twitter profile, and your twitter profile in one of your mastodon profile fields! For other websites, check your Profile Edit page for more detailed instructions.

The post length is set to 500 characters.

We ask that you enable Sensitive Media on all uploads by default in your profile settings, out of respect for our neighboring instances. If and image you want to share is Safe For Work and does not include any gore, genitalia, or explicit acts (could it be on TV?), then feel free to disable the sensitive filter for that image!

Emoji 😀

In addition to the standard emoji you might see on your phone, we have the ability to add custom emoji, similar to what you might see in a Discord server or Telegram stickers. You can add these to a post by opening the Emoji picker or adding the shortcode in the format of :emoji_name: with colons at each end of the emoji name. If you spell it correctly, you should see some recommended emoji pop up automatically.

Only admin may upload or copy these from other Mastodon Instances. If you see an emoji on Mastodon and would like to use it yourself, follow these steps:

1. Start a Reply to the post that contains the desired emoji
2. Set the Privacy of the reply to Direct Message
3. Remove any other @People from the reply and add @Taris (your admin)
4. Mention that you would like this emoji added to Gulp Cafe
5. Wait
6. Once i see the DM i'll add the emoji and it will show up in the Emoji Picker

PRINCIPLES

We stand for climate justice, which includes justice for all marginalized people as well as other living beings and we stand against discrimination and exploitation.

We are allies to disabled people, queer and lgbtqia* people, BIPoC, women, poor people, kids and future generations as well as other vulnerable groups including animals, plants and all living beings. We might be critical to religion in general, but stand up against antisemitism, islamomisia and other forms of discrimination due to religious background. We acknowledge our own privileges and work on our own unintentionally discriminatory behaviors. We are all part of an exploitative system and it's impossible to live within that system without harming anyone. We are aware of that and try to work against it, but we are not all fossil free and vegan and that's okay. We don't exclusively post about climate justice, but at least some of our posts should be about climate justice.

We consider ourselves on the left side of the political spectrum and stand up against right wing ideologies.

We have different political views, but are all on the left side or at least are left-open, but right-closed centrists. We stand together against capitalism and fascism and even if we disagree on important issues we don't loose sight of our common goals.

We believe the Fediverse should be a place for respectful discourse and we stand against harassment, trolling and spam.

Everybody's boundaries are to be respected.

We stand up for peace and against violence, oppression and authoritarianism.

We are pacifists, but acknowledge that when attacked, people have the right to defend themselves following international law. We may be critical of states in general, but we never deny any country their statehood. We condemn violence against innocent people and always show solidarity with victims of violence. We don't promote violence in protest, but peaceful sabotage against oppressors is not violence.

We stand behind the science and against fake-news & propaganda.

We are not all scientists ourselves and experts in every field we post about, but we try not to spread any false information. If possible we provide reliable sources. We don't spread unverified rumors. We do not promote harmful technologies like nuclear power, AI or crypto currencies. We don't post anything generated by AI except to enhance acessibility.

MODERATION POLICIES

These are just examples for further clarification. Our "server rules" below are what you have to stick to.

What will get you banned immediately:

• open discrimination
• right wing ideologies
• harassment, trolling, spam and porn
• calls for violence
• sympathy for oppression
• pro-authoritarianism
• spreading of anti-science stances, fake news or propaganda
• breaking the law drastically or repeatedly

When will we ask you to leave our instance:

• when you don't align with our principles
• when you follow our rules, but post almost nothing related to climate justice
• when you appear more critical of other leftists than the people on the right
• when we recorded multiple strikes against you and you don't cooperate
• when you show a pattern of failing to condemn violence or show unreflecting solidarity with a violent, oppressive or authoritarian group of people
• when you do things that break Austrian law, but are okay somewhere else
• when even after multiple hints you completely disregard our guidelines

What will get your post deleted and a strike recorded against you:

• likely unintentional discriminatory behavior or wording
• likely unintentional behavior that doesn't respect someone else's bondaries
• likely unintentionally posting something that could lead to violence
• likely unintentional spreading of false or unverified information
• when you post something that we fear might get us in trouble with the law

When will we ask you to edit your post and/or consider something for the future:

• clearly unintentional inconsiderate or unreflecting behavior or wording

Code of Conduct

Site administration reserves the right to suspend or remove users that do not behave in a civil manner. Specific guidelines are being further developed and will be placed here as the site develops.

Inappropriate Content

Users who post inappropriate content will be suspended after a warning. Repeat offenders will be permanently banned.

• Advertisements of any kind without the express written permission of site administration are PROHIBITED. Please ask permission before posting anything of a commercial nature

Content Warnings

The Mastodon platform offers a "content warning" feature that obscures post content until a user explicitly opens it. This allows for sensitive information or potentially offensive or distressing content to be hidden from those who do not wish to see it. The following should be placed within content warnings:

• Any level of violence, nudity or sexual content that would be deemed higher than a "PG" rating
• Anything that would be considered a "spoiler" when discussing popular movies, television shows, sporting events or current events
• Sensitive topics which may incite excessively heated arguments. Keep in mind that healthy lively discussion is encouraged and users are NOT expected to conceal everything that might be the slightest bit disagreeable!

Blocked Instances

Users of this instance are encouraged to use self moderation to silence and block at a user level. However as the federated Web grows there may be clear cases where an entire instance is clearly engaging in questionable behaviour. Instance level silencing and suspensions on this instance are implemented on an "as need" or complaint basis as their content appears in this instance's timelines, and on occasion preemptively based on others' block lists after manual review by administrators if deemed appropriate. That said reports WILL be taken seriously and required actions will be taken swiftly

Fediverse Friendly Moderation Covenant

This instance commits to the following

1. Administration and Moderation will be handled as neutral as possible

Reports and widespread information on specific instances (often known as bad actors) will be verified and actions might be taken as necessary.

2. Actions taken will respond to the bare minimum to keep the network operating and not influence the ability of the instances users to connect to other people

• If another instance spreads media content of questionable legality for the region the current instance is operating from, these files might be rejected from being saved.
• If another instance is sharing hateful messages that impact local users, there might be consideration of silencing that specific instance from being visible in timelines. If users follow and/or wish to follow users on the target instance, they are still free to do so.
• If another instance is posting content illegal in the local instance operation region or actively posts content attacking local users, a full instance block might be the last resort.

3. Communication before Actions

If any of the above behaviors start to surface from a given instance, the moderation of the local instance will attempt to inform the moderation/administration of that instance and resolve the problems coming from there. Only if no communication succeeded or no results that resolved issues came forth, actions will be taken towards that instance.

4. We won't recommend blocks

Blocklists and block recommendations as an information source are taken for granted but lack accurate verification. Instead of using these options to publicly announce instances of questionable intent, we will inform local users of such, with the reminder of possible personal options for hiding content that might impact their experience of the network.

5. No Guilt-by-Association/Federation

If we have applied any action against Instance X, an Instance Y that federates with them will not get the same judgement applied to them. A natural connection, as by the networks design, does not imply shared interests and thus doesn't warrant the same moderation methods.

Regardless of all given points above, in special cases the instance moderation/administration might still opt to block an instance, while this is tried to be avoided at most.
