The server and it’s components are run by Mike Fraser the system admin. He’s assisted by a small group of volunteer moderators who are able to assist our users in both official languages which are French and English. We’re mostly Canadians but any one can be a virtual Canadian! We currently have users from different countries and we’d love to add more.

Data Sovereignty

All of our hardware is wholly owned and operated by the system administrator of the Canadian. Our servers are hosted at tier one data centers in Kelowna and Burnaby British Columbia. All caching is done within these data center’s as well. What this means is that we can at anytime physically access our equipment and limit others from doing so. Your data never leaves Canada (unless you post it publicly).

All of our equipment runs on hydro electric power which is a %100 renewable energy source. The chill capacity at our data center is completely geo thermal which gives us a near zero carbon foot print.

The following guidelines are not a legal document, and final interpretation is up to the administration of thecanadian.social; they are here to provide you with an insight into our content moderation policies:

5. Lack of a specific rule against a certain behavior does not indicate acceptance of that behavior. Each of us has a limited amount of time in this world. Don't be a jerk.
6. Hate speech and abusive or threatening behavior is not permitted, specifically that which directed at any gender, nationality, religion, race, age, pizza topping preference, or sexual identity. One can hate on systemd all day long here.
7. Violating one or more of these rules may result in an immediate, permanent ban without notice or warning.
8. You may not impersonate a person or brand without a clear indication the account is unofficial and/or a parody. Parody accounts are permitted, as are legitimate brand accounts.
9. English or French only please. We have no moderation staff for other languages at this moment.

What can I post?

You're welcome to post about anything you want when the visibility is “Unlisted” or “For followers”. The Local timeline is “Public” and moderated. This is a community for wargamers about wargaming and the Local timeline should reflect topics related to the hobby. We’ll interpret “related to the hobby” liberally to encourage discussion, but draw the line at posts dealing with contemporary sexuality, gender, politics, race, or religion that denigrate others, or are intended to polarize the community. If you’re not sure how a potential post will be received, be conservative and post it as “Unlisted” or “For followers”, or use content warnings. The server rules apply to all posts regardless of visibility. Please follow them.

Is it free?

It's free. One of appeals of Mastodon is that it's free of the data harvesting and monetization practices so common on the web today. If the operational costs become unmanageable, I'll bring it to the community and we can solve it together.

Daily backups

Full daily backups are done nightly so you can have the confidence that an outage will not erase all of your data.

Redundant administration of the server infrastructure

A second administrator is on hand to mitigate the risk of a life event preventing me from administering the environment.

Commitment to 12 months of advance warning in case of shutting down

Sometimes services shut down, it is the cycle of life. I commit to maintaining 12 months of operating costs on hand to ensure you have time to move to another instance in the event this instance shuts down.
