Cutie City is a tiny, cozy, brand new Yastodon instance created by @nuz for anyone who'd like to make their status as a cutie even more official.

We're a small, safe community of mostly queer and neurodivergent folks who have zero tolerance for racism, transphobia, homophobia, misogyny, antisemitism, fascism, nazism, or any other shitty ideologies touted by people who think "free speech" is more important than empathy.

This place was originally only intended to host a handful of cuties whose former instance is shutting down, but then some more fedi ridiculousness happened, so... if you're looking for an instance that won't cut you off from your friends or wipe your data willy-nilly, then you have a home here. 💖​

Registrations

To create an account on this instance, you must:

  • Be 18+ years old. (I'm sorry, I don't want to be responsible for minors!)
  • Not be referring to yourself as a "refugee" for switching social media websites. If you don't understand why that's a problem, read this.
  • Provide a link to your current account(s), demonstrating compliance with this instance's rules, as well as a decent balance between boosts, replies, and original posts. Basically, this.
  • Have a cute potential username in mind. The shorter and sweeter, the better! Bonus points for all lowercase letters, because fuck capitalism, or something like that.
  • Be willing to deal with occasional growing pains as we find our footing. I'm doing my best, but as a first-time admin, I can't promise that the ride will never be bumpy!

Server Software

This instance is currently running glitch-soc, a friendly fork of Yastodon that adds quite a few cool features at the cost of potentially being less stable. It's a fun tradeoff!

One of the many perks of Glitch is that it lets us easily change variables such as the per-post character limit, so I've gone ahead and cranked all of those numbers up. (Click to expand this section to see what they are.)

  • Maximum characters per post = 8000
  • Maximum number of pinned posts = 10
  • Maximum characters in profile bio = 2000
  • Maximum number of profile data fields = 10
  • Maximum characters in display name = 60
  • Maximum number of options per poll = 60
  • Maximum characters per poll option = 200

Adjusting these limits is no problem at all, so if you're a Cutie Citizen and want one (or more) of them increased, don't hesitate to ask!

In the near future, I plan to add a few personal code changes on top of Glitch. Nothing too fancy, just some things to make the server even cuter, at the cost of potentially being even less stable. Just kidding... unless... 😅​

Server Costs

This instance is powered by a few third-party services, all of which were selected with technical, economical, and environmental sustainability in mind. (Click to expand this section for more details and a cost breakdown.)

  • Hetzner provides our VPS (virtual private server; hosted at a data center in Oregon, USA) and daily backups. Cost per month: $17.80
  • Storj provides object storage (for media files uploaded to this instance) on their global distributed network. Cost per month: $7.27
  • Porkbun is our domain name registrar and email (SMTP) provider. They're based in Oregon, USA. Cost per month: $3.33

The total cost of running this server is currently 28.40 USD per month, and it's only going to go up from here. More significantly, though, that number doesn't account for the time and effort that goes into behind-the-scenes technical administration and content moderation. It's a lot of work, but I think the results are going to be worth it - we're in this for the long haul. 🥰

This server is for people who want to appreciate, share, and learn about arthropods, herps, fungi, etc.—and who are open to helping other people appreciate them, too.

You don't have to only post about nature, though. If you also want a general fediverse home for chatting with friends and posting about other interests, that's okay too.

If you like, you can chip in for hosting costs.

You don't have to join this server to follow people, see posts, or participate! We would love to see the cool fungi, bugs, spiders, snakes, etc., that you find. Timelines, post visibility, local-only posting

Hometown/Mastodon displays several different kinds of post timelines. Your timelines include:

  • Home: all posts from people you follow, plus posts they boost.
  • Local: all public posts from people on flipping.rocks.
  • Federated: all public posts from people (on other servers) that anyone on flipping.rocks follows, plus posts they boost.

You can choose various levels of visibility for your posts: public, unlisted, followers-only, and mentioned people only. Note that posts for mentioned people only (a. k. a. direct messages) are not end-to-end encrypted. Theoretically, flipping.rocks admins or fedi.monster staff could see them, though we all have better things to do. So if you really need a secure communication channel, use something like Signal.

You can also choose to make your posts local-only. This means the post is only visible on flipping.rocks and doesn’t get sent to any other servers. You can make posts local-only by clicking the chain-link icon below the post field, or (if you’re using an app that doesn’t have that option) by including the custom emoji :local_only:.

Alt text, content warnings, and sensitive media

Please do your best to add image descriptions, a. k. a. alt text! It is a basic point of fediverse etiquette, and many people will not boost images without them. If you can’t add an image description, you can use the hashtag #Alt4Me in your post to indicate you want someone to write one for you.

Content warnings are good for hiding many things, like movie spoilers, Wordle or Metazooa results (or anything else with lots of emoji or non-standard characters, which messes up screen readers), depressing/enraging/tiresome politics, joke punchlines, common triggers for PTSD, addictions, eating disorders, etc., or anything else you want to give your followers the option to skip.

If you attach an image to a post with a content warning, it will automatically be marked sensitive. However, you can also mark media sensitive without using a content warning. The post text will all be visible, but the image will be blurred until the reader selects it.

If you are posting a picture of an arthropod, snake, or any other creature people commonly have phobias about, consider marking it sensitive. You don’t have to, but if you don’t, you must use informative descriptions or hashtags (e. g. “Pet snake”, #spiders, etc.) so people can filter out the post if they want.

Server blocks/defederation

On Hometown/Mastodon, you can mute or block users, but you can also mute or block entire servers. Flipping.rocks admins can also mute or block users or servers for everyone on flipping.rocks. We communicate with other admins and proactively mute and block servers that are sources of spam, harassment, bigotry, and more. We consult flipping.rocks members when considering muting or blocking a server if it has any users that people on flipping.rocks follow. I have created this instance because after being on Mastodon / Fediverse since 2019 I haven't discovered enough gamers to discuss video games with. I have decided to boldly go where no gamer has gone before. My gift to you is a gaming-oriented Mastodon instance where you will find others with mutual interests.

Important message

But in order for this instance to succeed two stars will need to align, and stay aligned.

1. This instance is hosted on masto.host and I need monthly help in funding it. You are welcome to participate for free, but if you like being here please consider funding it monthly if you can. Ko-Fi link is below.

2. As this instance grows, the number of people who have not read the rules will inevitably grow as well, and so will the need for moderation grow. A trustworthy moderator team will be essential. Let me know if you are interested to volunteer for the job and why.

If the above-mentioned stars fail to align in the long run I pledge to you that I will give you a three months notice before shutting down the server so you will have plenty of time to relocate to a different instance.

About

503junk.house is a small Mastodon (Hometown) instance for anarchist-adjacent people in or around Portland, OR. The goal is to have a small community which is built over time both online and offline.

Why the name?

The local area code is 503 (there is also a newer 971, but we went with 503). We also wanted to model our community off of 483punk.house, but with less of a focus on the local punk scene (though that is welcome too!). So junk house was a funny play on words. Put it all together and you have 503junk.house

How to join

You can go to the homepage and apply to register. There are requirements to join:

  • Have a current member vouch for you (this may be waived in order to increase diversity on the instance)
  • Be connected to Portland and willing to visit for an in-person event from time to time (like a summer BBQ or something)
  • Agree to server rules
  • Contribute to the community in some way (from spreading the word, adding emojos, moderating, organizing in-person events, etc)

OPSEC

  • IPs are retained for 1 week
  • Backups are retained for 1 week
  • All things posted on mastodon should be consider insecure and public (use encrypted apps for sensitive content or better yet only relay it in-person)
  • You may use Tor or a VPN to access your account, but with these shared IPs your access may be temporarily disabled if we experience attacks.

Policy and Governance

We want to remain small enough that we can talk to each other. We each have roles to play. Within 30 days we will ask you to assign yourself a community role, and if everyone consents then you will be given the privileges you need to fulfill that role (if any). You can also shift roles at a later time if you want, and the whole process will be ad-hoc.

For moderation, those assigned the privileges of moderating will be empowered to moderate without gaining permission first in order to quickly respond to threats. Moderation actions may be reversed after the community discusses the action. Moderation actions are logged for community auditing.

Cost

The service is free. It's a gift. The operating costs to the community do exist though and cost about $80 a month (link to budget spreadsheet forthcoming). Soon there will be a way to donate and give back if you desire to do so, but it's not required.

Architecture

Our servers run on Linode located in their California datacenter. The main server, opossum, is a 4GB VPS. We also have a secondary search server, rat, that is a 2GB VPS. Linode server backups are enabled on opossum. There are two 150GB data stores attached to opossum. The first data store holds the database and the media we upload. The second datastore is used for encrypted backups of the first data store. Firewalls are in place for all servers and unneeded ports are restricted. Remote administration connections require ssh keys to access. Mailgun is used to send server emails.

Backups

Linode backups are made once a day at 4am.

Full backups are made on the first of the month using duplicity. Then daily incremental backups are made at 3am.

At 5am, the encrypted backups are synced offsite to the administrators home computer.
