Expectations for people on this server

  1. This server is invite-only, consisting of people who are part of a community of transportation advocates centered in the Bay Area, who also know each other off of the Internet. If you know people on this server IRL, you can ask for an invite.
  2. We don’t tolerate any form of reactionary bigotry: no nazis, no TERFs or transphobes, no racists, etc.
  3. Generally, treat people within this server and related communities with respect. Rule 2 is higher priority than this rule. We also don’t expect you to be polite to, say, someone being racist. But if you make well-moderated servers that we have close ties with want to defederate with us, consider how you are affecting other people on the server.
  4. Most of us are somewhere on the left politically. We don’t have strong ideological requirements, but if your politics are far from those of people on the server, this might not be the server for you.
  5. We mostly want to reduce the use of cars and replace them with better forms of transportation. We don’t require you to be totally car free to use this server, but you should be on board with reducing car dependency.

Content warnings

Please put images of violence (e.g. a video of you being hit by a car) behind a CW.

Similarly, anything that would be uncomfortable to show up on your feed on, say, the bus, should be behind a CW.

In general though we see content warnings as a tool that you may choose to use in different ways. Someone may choose to put something behind a CW, but you don’t have to. In particular, you might see someone putting their personal experiences of experiencing racism behind a content warning, but that does not mean that it’s an expectation of this server.

Server Administration

The plan is to keep the server up indefinitely. Currently two people have access to the server infrastructure, and the intention is that there will always be at least two people who can run the server.

If circumstances change and it becomes necessary to entirely shut it down, we will give three months notice. If it makes sense, and the members of the server are fine with that, we would be willing to transfer ownership to a member of the server instead.

In general, we aim to make server decisions by consensus, and allow people to be as involved in the running of the server as they want to be.

Defederation policies

We will make any new and unexpected decisions by consensus, but to avoid having a discussion every time something comes up, we have already decided anyone can defederate from servers that are a danger to the people on the server or the server infrastructure. This includes:

  • Servers that permit CSAM (child sexual abuse material) or content that resembles such
  • Servers that host fascists or other political movements that are actively hostile and dangerous to our members
  • Servers that host malware, conduct DDOS attacks, or otherwise interfere with the functioning of this server
  • So-called “free speech” servers or servers with such poor moderation that they effectively fall into one of the previous categories

This Mastodon server is for Buddhists of all traditions and others exploring the teachings of the Buddha. It is owned by John Clinton Bradley, a Zen practitioner in the Plum Village tradition. However, this instance is neither affiliated with nor endorsed by Plum Village.

Membership is free. Dāna (generous giving) pays for essential infrastructure—such as the domain name, email, server hosting, and a translation API. Please consider making a donation using our Librapay account.

You must be at least 16 years of age to join. Although this server is based in the United States, we have chosen to comply with the more stringent requirements of the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation.

Watch out, we're running an experimental fork of Mastodon. See further down below for details.

This instance is a safe space for queer and/or neurodivergent people. We also strive to become one for the BIPOC, Romani, and other marginalized subgroups of the LGBTQ+ community (see disclaimer below). If you have an issue with that, don't even bother applying for an account. In addition to the bigotry clause in the rule list, we have a zero tolerance policy against any form of fascism and/or authoritarianism. This includes, but is not limited to, nazis and tankies. We are primarily English and German speaking, but other languages are welcome, too. Our main interests are:

  • Being gay on the Internet
  • Touching computers
  • Political discourse about queerness, neurodivergence, and other topics about marginalized people
  • Ending capitalism

Disclaimer for BIPOC, Romani, and other ethnic minorities: This instance, like most others unfortunately, is hopelessly white. I acknowledge this is a problem and would love to do something about it. Feel free to get in touch with me if you have any suggestions to make this place more welcoming to you; i will try my best to accommodate for your needs. Nobody here has sinister intentions, but we are not immune to systemic racism.

Content policy details

Although the name might admittedly suggest otherwise, this is generally not an NSFW-focused instance. However, lewd content of any kind is totally allowed so long as you use appropriate content warnings and respect other people's boundaries. We also explicitly welcome sex workers and lewd alt accounts! Just keep in mind that if you explicitly seek a community centered around sexual topics, this might not be the instance you've been looking for.

Naturally, any depictions of minors in a sexual context will be deleted on sight, period. This phrasing is intentionally kept vague because if you even have to think about whether something would fall under that rule, you definitely shouldn't post it. So-called “MAPs” can fuck right off.

The fediverse is generally not too fond of corporate advertising, and girldick.gay sure is no exception: We don't tolerate any brands except non-profits, small personal businesses, and worker unions. The same applies to defending them. Furthermore, don't post anything that might be considered spam or otherwise unwanted, including excessive self promotion.

If you don't acknowledge the inherent problems with anything related to blockchain technology (including, but not limited to, cryptocurrencies and NFTs), you won't have a good time on here. Talking uncritically positive about that stuff is strongly discouraged, and will likely get you banned if you give off cryptobro vibes.

Moderation & federation

We decide the consequences for rule violations on a case-by-case basis, depending on severity and context. As such, the outcome can be anything between a friendly notice and a permanent ban. We are generally stricter than more popular instances like, say, mastodon.social, because this is supposed to be a cozy little place just for us. This is not the place to debate whether we deserve human rights.

Other instances whose admin either violates these rules themselves or tolerates their users doing so will be defederated entirely. Instances with poor moderation will be either limited or suspended, depending on the severity of the situation.

Technical details

We are running nyastodon, our own custom fork of Mastodon based on glitch-soc and Catstodon.

Note that this is bleeding edge software with some fun quirks compared to vanilla Mastodon, so you might encounter rough spots here and there. The biggest difference is probably support for emoji reactions, which is actually in the process of being merged into upstream right now.

This instance lives in a VM hosted on a Hetzner dedicated server with full disk encryption. I'm doing daily encrypted backups with a retention period of up to 4 weeks. In spite of all odds, the site actually has reasonable uptime and I usually post a notice before doing planned maintenance (which mostly happens late at night in the CET/CEST time zone).

  3. No illegal content, specifically anything illegal under the jurisdiction of Germany. Yes, be gay do crime, but i don't have the resources to fight legal battles just for girldick.gay to stay online.
  4. Provide alt text for images and videos
  5. Use content warnings where appropriate. For example: selfie/ec (eye contact), mh (mental health), sh (self harm), etc. You get the idea.
  6. Give a hint as to what kind of person you are when signing up. I can't afford to run an instance that needs 24/7 monitoring and moderation, so please reference your website/twitter/previous fediverse account or any other indication that you might fit in this community.
  7. Don't be completely inactive. New accounts should at the very least set up their profile after being accepted; and i reserve the right to delete those that don't after a reasonable time.

We're making a little friendly Twitter clone using Mastodon which is for #ttrpg (and other tabletop). Like Twitter but with moderation and not owned by a billionaire.

Needs some work yet, but if we get it going we imagine it will be a small friendly inclusive community (we're not planning on taking over the world with it, just making a nice space we'd like to hang out in).

Responsible, representative moderation would be nice, too.

Mastodon Transit Authority builds community and solidarity. We welcome those interested in building thriving communities online and in real-life throughout the Puget Sound Region. We are organizers, nerdy about transit, renters, union members, tech workers, musicians, neighbors, climate activists, mutual aid participants; we are passionate about mobility justice, a right to housing, and cross-race / cross-class / cross-generational / intersectional communities. Code of Conduct

We want people to be curious. To ask questions rather than start with accusations. We also want people to recognize power dynamics and lived experience in terms of their expectations in engaging in online spaces, as they would in face-to-face spaces. If you don’t already practice progressive stack in communities you are in, please take some time to learn what that means and how to implement it. It goes a long way to reducing harm when you’re just starting to build community in person, and online.

We will take swift and clear steps to reduce harmful behaviors. We know harm will happen and we want to make sure you can get help when it does. Moderators on this server will move quickly and seek out additional supports to remove and deter accounts that:

Espouse, or sealion ideals destructive to other people’s well-being, including but not limited to:

  • Violence, racism, classism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, anti-semitism, fascism, ecofascism, ethno-nationalism, settler colonialism, religious extremism, neurotype supremacy

Carry out online behaviors that harm, or emotionally exhaust other people:

  • harassment, brigading (including posts that may encourage others to harass), sealioning, doxxing (weaponization of private information disclosure, such as disclosing or publicizing addresses, email, phone numbers, medical history, private identifying information, etc without consent), spamming, slander, spreading misinformation/disinformation, privacy and consent violations (taking screenshots of “locked” / private-to-follower posts and sharing them publicly without the author’s consent)

Denial of service, proper server operation, and other members’ content readability, including:

  • Running automation or bots in a way that overloads the server, or is unpleasantly noisy for other users

This server is hosted in Washington state, United States and content must not violate local laws.

99% of the time, these rules will not be needed because the people here and in the broader community will be awesome. There's always the chance they aren't, so we have rules. Finally, if you run into a problem, reach out to an admin! Someone can probably fix what ails the server or tell you what's going on.

Technical Safety and Privacy

Because of how Mastodon works, no stored communications here are encrypted. Even things that appear private to you, like direct messages or restricted account posts, are not private relative to the server administrators. Server admins are not allowed, by rule of the server owner, to read this content; however this is enforced only by rule. The admins will treat your data with respect and privacy but if you want to make certain no one is able to see your communications with another person, consider other alternatives such as Signal.

While the instance is backed up regularly, please keep a copy of your own data in case the worst happens.

Moderators and Advisors

This instance has six volunteer administrators and moderators who tend to the server, the software, and keeping posts flowing that are consistent with our rules and values. These folks are, in order by user name: @analogist, @Andres4NY (an admin for the underlying server host and not the instance), @danielhep, @kona, @oowm, @rachael. We will do our best to keep an eye on things, particularly abuse reports. There might be a delay in replying if something major happens or if one or all of us are away.

If this list of people changes, we will make an announcement post to let the community know. If you report a post or user, all of us receive it. Any admin can take action on their own, particularly in urgent situations, but we discuss major actions beforehand.

This server is new and potentially unstable. We do our best to back it up, but please keep that in mind until the server is stabilized.

This server is entirely paid for by me. Donations are welcome, optional, and entirely appreciated.
