Our stance on Big Tech

We firmly believe that Big Tech is a threat to the Fediverse and that all appropriate measures should be taken. These Big Tech platforms lack moderation, are hostile towards minorities and their dildo-rocket-launching CEOs have shown a complete disregard of respect towards others.

Server recommendations

1. Be kind. Love your neighbor as yourself.
2. Complete your user profile. Other users are more likely to follow you if you add your name, a bio, a header image, and an avatar image. If you prefer to remain anonymous, that’s fine.
3. Introduce yourself with an initial post. Indicate your interests with hashtags.
4. Add descriptive text to all images, videos, and audio files you attach to posts. People who use screen readers need descriptive text to interpret content they cannot see.
5. Use the appropriate level of privacy for your posts. Do you want a post to be visible to everyone, only to people who follow you, or to the specific people mentioned in the post?
6. Make good use of content warnings. Ask yourself, “Is what I’m posting likely to be a trauma trigger for some readers?” If the answer is yes, add a content warning to your post.

This instance was first created on May 21st 2018.

The character limit on this instance is 8,192 characters, and the file size limit is 50M. Please be responsible with large uploads as they get cached on other instances too, we recommend that large files should be uploaded to a file host and linked in your post.

The domain is registered through Porkbun as of 2021-05-11.

The CDN provider for this instance's media is BunnyCDN with the US, EU, and AP zones active. Traffic from Russia and China gets rerouted to the cheapest node.

The main website used to be proxied through CloudFlare, but proxying was disabled on 2020-06-10. We plan to move DNS from CloudFlare to Hurricane Electric DNS or another provider eventually.

This instance does not federate with hidden service instances (aka. Tor instances).

Rules

These rules are very basic and only serve as a guide. Administrators reserve the right to delete your account or content posted by your account at any time for any reason they see fit to the extent permissible by law.

All content is stored in Germany on Hetzner dedicated servers, and as such you must conform to Germany's laws and Hetzner's policies.

Blocked Instances

We do not block other instances unless they were made specifically for things like data scraping and spam, or are centered around unwanted content (i.e. illegal content, violence).

We do not reject media from other instances unless a high volume of unwanted media originates from them.

Mastodon Version

This instance strives to run the most recent stable version of Mastodon (not prereleases) with a few quality-of-life patches:

• Character limit increased from 500 to 8,192.
• Posts from muted accounts appear in lists.
• "Hide bots" and "Hide sensitive bot posts" options added to local and federated timelines.
• Bot profiles do not appear in the profile directory.
• Sensitive bot posts do not appear on public timelines unless you are logged in.
• Content-Security-Policy allows script-src 'unsafe-eval' 'unsafe-inline' (performed through NGINx).

We will update this instance within a week after a new Mastodon release. You can find out what version this instance is running at the bottom of this page (the about page).

We do not guarantee to always be running the latest version. Sometimes we forget to upgrade, or there's a bug preventing us from upgrading. You can contact an administrator if the instance is running outdated software for more information.

TOPLAP Social is intended as the home for live coding on Mastodon. It is for those involved with live coding in some capacity - practitioner, organizer, learner, researcher, getting started, or exploring.

Joining

If you want to participate in our live coding community, please request an account and briefly tell us about your live coding interest. If you are already engaged in live coding, one sentence is enough ("I'm currently live coding in Tidal, Hydra and Mercury.") If you are learning or curious and exploring, tell us more about what you want to do with live coding and why you want to join. If you don't mention live coding or something closely related, we will likely leave your account request in "Pending" and ask for more detail.

Once you have your bearings please add details to your Profile and tell us about yourself with an #introduction post.

• What platforms are you interested in exploring, or what are you already using?
• Add info to help us get to know you, and perhaps link to some things you've made or are interested in.

Goals for TOPLAP Social

We are striving for an active, engaged, supportive, diverse, and safe environment.

• A place where live coders and those interested in live coding share their thoughts, ideas and creative expressions.
• It must be a place free of threatening or uncomfortable speech and generally not cluttered with a lot of unrelated chatter.
• We seek higher levels of engagement that foster communication, interaction, and vulnerability.
• Ultimately it should be simple and down to earth - a place where people talk about their activity, interests and journeys in live coding and related creative expressions.

Moderation (MORE COMING SOON)

Monitoring and managing content will become more important as our community grows. Fortunately, Mastodon has built-in tools to help. We plan to flesh this out as soon as we can, and plan to expand our team of admins to help review and respond to posts that may diverge from our shared community interest. For now, you can post any concerns about content to the @toplap shared admin account.

Community and Project Accounts

We have made a point of bringing in local community accounts and project accounts.

• Community accounts can be existing TOPLAP nodes or any other local organization engaged in live coding activity. In this way we learn about and support activity happening at the local level.
• Project accounts represent specific live coding languages and platforms, like Mercury, Gibber, TidalCycles or combined projects like Bubo Tools.

Using TOPLAP Social

• Check the timelines regularly (Home, Notifications, Local, etc). The Home timeline shows activity from yourself and your Followers. The Local timeline shows activity from TOPLAP Social, all posts from all accounts on our server.
• Respond to posts of interest - reply, boost, favorite, bookmark, etc.
  
• Visibility (link icon): You can set the visibility level on your post, setting local-only vs federated for every post and reply you make. The default "Federated" is best for most posts, but circumstances exist where you want to limit something to our server alone.
• Visibility (globe icon): Select "Public", "Followers Only", or "Mentioned People Only".
• Annoucements: we will use these to communicate important messages to everyone.

Costs / Open Collective crowd fund

For longevity of this server, we will establish an operating fund. This needs to be sustainable for the long term. The server costs are ~ $25 USD per month, which will increase to $35. With event streaming, infrastructure costs will grow to $50+/month. Our $100 referral credit has expired and we are now accruing hosting costs monthly.

Live coding is a movement in performing arts tech that began around the year 2000. TOPLAP is a loose organisation formed in 2004, to collectively explore and promote live coding.

The aim of this server is to help host a community of live coders on the fediverse. You can find a growing list of live coding communities and project accounts (on this instance and beyond) in this post.

Moderation

Reports sent to us due to account activity will be acted upon within 24 hours of receiving the report. Any action taken will be at the discretion of the moderation team.

Accounts will be suspended after 3 months of inactivity and subsequently deleted. 'Activity' does not mean just logging in, if you're not going to post anything why are you here?

Federation

We will never defederate from another server just because someone in the Fediverse doesn't like that server or who runs / owns it. I don't see why we should arbitrarily block a server (e.g. threads.net), preventing our users from accessing accounts on that server.

Updates

We aim to update the core Mastodon software and any 3rd party apps it uses as soon as updates become available. This will occasionally result in unscheduled downtime (hopefully not more than a few minutes).

We are aiming to run an inclusive photography community in a wee corner of the fediverse! While we are photography focused, nothing is "off topic" here! We don't want to forget the person in "a person who takes photographs". (That's what our domain means!) Let your freak shine!

Don't forget we're on mad-cripple time here now, allowing time for ourselves (and yourselves!) to be our full self, rest, and still get things going and done but at a huemon-friendly pace.

Things to know

• photog.social is a separate and independent instance and is not affiliated with the Mastodon organization. We are not corporate-owned social media 🎊
• Announcements can be found via the built-in Announcements feature, as well as by following @ambassador@photog.social and @modmins@photog.social
• No ads, no algorithms, no trackers, and we'll never sell your data.
• You have the exclusive rights to your work and posts. Note however we cannot control what other servers do with your data nor guarantee scrapers will not access our site.
• We are firmly anti-genocide and anti-colonial. We have a zero-tolerance policy for bigotry and white supremacy.
• The rules are meant in good-faith and are not meant to cover every precise situation that may require our moderators to take action. Bad-faith interpretations and actions will not be tolerated.
• Violation of the first rule will get your account suspended without warning and earn you a #fediblock. Violation of the last rule will mean a warning and then a suspension of your account in at least one week. All other rules: if we choose to, we may delete the specific post(s) and will DM you from the moderator account. Unavailable Content and Instance Moderation

Some instances we have chosen to remove from our federated timeline. You can still follow accounts on these instances and if you follow a user on one of the instances that does not appear on our federated timeline, their posts will show in your personal timeline. These are mainly instances that tend to be busy and/or are known for overloading our federated timeline with posts.

Some instances we have chosen to block outright. Most of these instances are full of illegal content, hate speech, and more. We've also blocked instances that have run harassment campaigns against others in the past. You will NOT be able to interact with these instances from our instance.

1. No AI-generated content nor NFT-related content are allowed *AT ALL* on this instance.
2. Do not share information you know to be false or misleading. This includes anti-vax nonsense, Holocaust denial, and so on.
3. Public photos of people are generally acceptable. Do not post photos of folks that have asked you not to. People in a photo have the right to have it taken down on request.
