This instance is proudly hosted on Hetzner in Germany. Good stuff. If you need to contact an administrator, send a DM to @dean or email the email address listed above.

This instance was first created on May 21st 2018.

The character limit on this instance is 8,192 characters, and the file size limit is 50M. Please be responsible with large uploads as they get cached on other instances too, we recommend that large files should be uploaded to a file host and linked in your post.

The domain is registered through Porkbun as of 2021-05-11.

The CDN provider for this instance's media is BunnyCDN with the US, EU, and AP zones active. Traffic from Russia and China gets rerouted to the cheapest node.

The main website used to be proxied through CloudFlare, but proxying was disabled on 2020-06-10. We plan to move DNS from CloudFlare to Hurricane Electric DNS or another provider eventually.

This instance does not federate with hidden service instances (aka. Tor instances).

Rules

These rules are very basic and only serve as a guide. Administrators reserve the right to delete your account or content posted by your account at any time for any reason they see fit to the extent permissible by law.

All content is stored in Germany on Hetzner dedicated servers, and as such you must conform to Germany's laws and Hetzner's policies.

5. No child pornography or jail bait.
6. No accounts for the sole purpose of advertising, scraping, or spamming. This includes corporate accounts (exceptions may apply, you may ask over email before signing up).
7. No automated/bot accounts that post pornography (porn bots from other instances are not blocked, but they are not permitted to sign up locally).

Additionally, any NSFW content that is not marked sensitive (images) or does not have a content warning attached (text) is not tolerated. Please report NSFW toots that are not censored, or any content that you feel doesn't belong on this instance.

Automated accounts are permitted upon request. Please reach out to an administrator before creating an automated account. Please be extra careful with bots that may automatically post NSFW content.

The rules were last updated 2025-10-05: required bot sign ups to ask for permission first.

Blocked Instances

We do not block other instances unless they were made specifically for things like data scraping and spam, or are centered around unwanted content (i.e. illegal content, violence).

We do not reject media from other instances unless a high volume of unwanted media originates from them.

A list of current blocked instances and rejected media instances (with reasons) can be found in the Moderated Servers section on this page. If you would like an entry added to or removed from this list, please contact an administrator.

Decisions are made on a per-instance basis as per the administrator's discretion.

Mastodon Version

This instance strives to run the most recent stable version of Mastodon (not prereleases) with a few quality-of-life patches:

• Character limit increased from 500 to 8,192.
• Posts from muted accounts appear in lists.
• "Hide bots" and "Hide sensitive bot posts" options added to local and federated timelines.
• Bot profiles do not appear in the profile directory.
• Sensitive bot posts do not appear on public timelines unless you are logged in.
• Content-Security-Policy allows script-src 'unsafe-eval' 'unsafe-inline' (performed through NGINx).

We will update this instance within a week after a new Mastodon release. You can find out what version this instance is running at the bottom of this page (the about page).

We do not guarantee to always be running the latest version. Sometimes we forget to upgrade, or there's a bug preventing us from upgrading. You can contact an administrator if the instance is running outdated software for more information.

We're making a little friendly Twitter clone using Mastodon which is for #ttrpg (and other tabletop). Like Twitter but with moderation and not owned by a billionaire.

Needs some work yet, but if we get it going we imagine it will be a small friendly inclusive community (we're not planning on taking over the world with it, just making a nice space we'd like to hang out in).

CODE OF CONDUCT

You have to follow the rules to use this instance. I don't want to get our instance suspended by other instances and want this to be a pleasant place to be. Please follow our rules and try to be courteous to the fediverse culture in public posts. The rules are available in the "server rules" tab below.

Explicit pornographic content must use a Content Warning, but the extent that you use other CWs is up to you. It is encouraged to CW common topics that bother people when posting on Public. Public posts will show up to people who do not follow you on the federated/local timelines, so be courteous.

Unlisted posts will show up for non-followers if someone reblogs your post, but I think that should be up to the sharer to decide if they want to share an non-CW'd post to their followers. * Please note that people can see unlisted posts if they visit your profile.

Followers-Only posts are only visible to logged-in followers and cannot be reblogged. It's up to you if you want to CW these, only your followers will be able to see them.

FEDERATION POLICY

Denden will blacklist instances that foster hate-speech, harassment, CSAM (child sex abuse material), or anything else that is illegal to host in the United States.

Denden does not use pre-made instance blocklists. There have been too many occasions of blocklists being manipulated by bad actors to include innocent people for me to trust them. Blocked instances are individually vetted by the admins.

We will not blacklist instances based on 'guilt-by-federation': if an instance federates with a "bad" instance, but otherwise does not foster bad behavior (racism/harassment/etc), it will not be blacklisted.

We will also not blacklist an instance solely based on disputes with admins. The actions of admins do not necessarily represent the views of regular users on the instance.

Note: Denden's rules are designed to both foster a pleasant community as well as minimize the likelihood of being blacklisted by other instances. The content mentioned in rule 4 is illegal in France, where many instances are hosted.

INFO FOR DENDEN USERS

Other instances won't be suspended unless they foster hate-speech, harassment, or CSAM. You might see content that you don't like in the federated timeline. Make sure to set filters in your account settings.

Instead of us suspending instances, I encourage you to curate your own instance blocklist. You can block an instance in the same way you can block a user, you will not see anything from the whole instance, and users in that instance will not be able to interact with you.

In the event I need to take the server down for good, I will give everyone at least 3 months notice to export your data and migrate to another server.

MODERATION

If someone is being troublesome, please report them. If they're from another instance, I am able to block them from this instance.

Please only forward reports to a rule-breaker's instance if they are breaking the rules on their instance as well. You are anonymous to other instance's admins in forwarded reports.

Code Of Conduct

cooler.mom is an instance for moms; if you apply to become a user, it’s expected that you have, had, or are expecting at least one (human) child—sorry, but pets are not children, no matter how much we love them. Being a mother does not mean identifying or being labeled as a woman, nor does it mean you are physically capable of giving birth or breastfeeding. In that spirit, cooler.mom welcomes all sexualities, gender identities, races, levels of mobility, and ages.

If a user posts a message that mocks, harasses, endangers, threatens, or otherwise puts at risk any other person on the basis of the criteria above, they will be banned from cooler.mom. There is not an appeals process.

Sharing your experiences as a mother is what we’re all here to do, but take care to distinguish between “this is what worked for me” and “this is what you should do.” Whatever the intentions behind it, unsolicited advice—especially involving a user's health and wellness—is often indistinguishable from harassment and will be treated as such. This is especially true when the health or safety of children is concerned. Please ask permission before giving advice to another user.

Generally, seek to understand what a user is looking for when they post their feelings. Is it encouragement, explanation, empathy? It never hurts to ask before you post your reply.

Mastodon’s robust support for content warnings (CWs) is a valuable part of the platform. Please consider using CWs for images that might be considered “not safe for work” like nudity or breastfeeding content, for stories of loss or injury, for video in general, and for photos with eye contact.

We do not have formal rules around what exactly should or should not be placed under a CW, but repeated posts of sensitive content without them may result in a message from an admin. Before you ask another person to CW something that is disruptive to you, consider whether one of the myriad other options for personal content moderation—muting, blocking, unfollowing, or filtering words—would achieve the result of removing that content from your own timeline.

Fediverse?

The Fediverse is a social media network that uses the ActivityPub protocol. TurtleIsland.social and other applications/network nodes (instances) are connected and communicate with each other via the Fediverse (ActivityPub) network. You only need to join one instance to like, follow, post, view and share content with the thousands of other instances in the Fediverse.

Why?

TurtleIsland.social is ad-free, corporate-free, bigotry-free, and culture respectful environments for Native/Indigenous people, BIPOC people and true Allies to be in community and safe spaces.

• Ultimately, we are helping to build an Indigenized social network.
• We stand with our people.
• We know and support their struggles.
• We moderate to Indigenous standards not colonial standards.

How much?

TurtleIsland.social is 100% free. We will never charge fees or pressure anyone for donations. All expenses are paid for by the administrators and donations.

What?

TurtleIsland.social is a small/medium sized instance due to our specialized nature.

• TurtleIsland.social will never be a large general purpose instance and will be Indigenized as much as possible.
• We are federated with 99% of the Fediverse but use no relays in order to maximize content relevant to our users.

TurtleIsland.social believes 100% in true Native/Indigenous Nation sovereignty, physical and digital LandBack. We reject calls to assimilate into the nearly all white culture Fediverse. The whole ghettoization theory is white supremacy garbage.

Blocked instances

We use the Oliphant Tier 0 blocklist, which is a composite of Seirdy's Tier 0, Gardenfence, and the IFTAS DNI list, and blocks the majority of the bad actors without getting crazy aggressive. If you see anything blocked or not blocked that you believe is in error, let us know.

Commitment

• TurtleIsland.social is committed to 3 months notice in the extremely unlikely event we should decide to pull the plug.

Backup and Maintenance

• TurtleIsland.social configuration files, media and database storage are backed up daily to a remote secure object storage. All other servers are backed up weekly, generally on Wednesdays at 5am-6am CST with a full virtual server snapshot.
• TurtleIsland.social might have unscheduled maintenance or upgrade events. We have over 99% uptime availability.

Data, Image and File Warranties/Guarantees

Even though there are regular backup procedures, there are no data, image and file warranties/guarantees. Images may be compressed or resized. It is user responsibility to keep copies of all data, images and files uploaded to or created on Turtle Island instances.

Post-Migration

For voluntary migrations from TurtleIsland.social to another instance, there is a 7 day period afterwards that you can download or access your content. After 7 days, there is no guarantee that anyone will be able to access your content.

Turtle Island Rules

1. This is an Indigenous Mastodon instance

• Any anti-Indigenous activity from a Turtle Island account at the sole determination of the administrators or moderators will be grounds for account(s) termination.
• Any anti-Indigenous activity from an external instance at the sole determination of the administrators or moderators will be grounds for user blocking, report filing, and/or domain blocking/de-federation.

2. Absolutely no anti-indigeneity, racism or bigotry

• We can not stress this enough - Absolutely no anti-indigeneity, racism, bigotry, antisemitism, islamophobia, pro-genocide, pro-ethnic cleansing, pro-terrorism, pro-rape, pro-sexual assault, pro-hostage taking, pro-child abuse, sexism, homophobia, and transphobia.
• 95%+ of our issues fall in this category; we take this seriously.
• Any infraction of this category from a Turtle Island account at the sole determination of the administrators or moderators will be grounds for account termination.
• Any infraction of this category from an external instance at the sole determination of the administrators or moderators will be grounds for user blocking, report filing, and/or domain blocking/de-federation.

Extra clarity international racism note:

The Jewish and Palestinian peoples are BOTH factually Indigenous to the Levant by the same standards that apply to North American Indigenous peoples. If you have any confusion or doubt about this, we recommend you stop right now and go read our blog post 'There are no super-Indigenous people', which is loaded with scientific and historical FACTS.

This instance does enforce our no antisemitism and/or no Islamophobia rules. Being a member of any marginalized group does not give anyone a ticket to be a racist or bigot here.

A couple examples of many that come up frequently: River to Sea is ethnic cleansing and antisemitic. Promoting settlements in the West Bank is ethnic cleansing and Islamophobic. It doesn’t matter how much misinformed or disingenuous propaganda you read or who counsels you otherwise, these acts cannot be sanitized. The majority of the Jewish population will see River to Sea as ethnic cleansing and very antisemitic, and the majority of the Palestinian population will see settlement building in the West Bank as ethnic cleansing and very Islamophobic.

You can criticize the Israeli or Palestinian governments all day and night long if you wish, but the moment you add antisemitic or Islamophobic material to your post, the whole post becomes antisemitic or Islamophobic. Likewise, the moment you deny or distort the Indigeneity of Jewish and/or Palestinian peoples anywhere in the world, the whole post becomes antisemitic or Islamophobic.

Turtle Island officially supports a two state solution in Israel/Palestine as the only realistic and fair solution for the Israeli and Palestinian peoples.

If any part of this current events note makes you chafe, Turtle Island may not be the place for you. Peace and co-existence are the only acceptable goals on Turtle Island.

3. Promoting Indigenous art/products/businesses

• Promoting authentic Indigenous art, products and businesses is allowed and encouraged.
• Promoting fake, inspired, or appropriated products is not allowed.
• Non-Indigenous businesses masquerading as Indigenous owned are not allowed.

4. Disallowed Mutual Aid request types

• We strongly support Mutual Aid, however:
• Must use #IndigenousMutualAid, #SettlerSaturday or #MutualAid hashtags as appropriate.
• Requests for mutual aid must be on your original post.
• Requests cannot be made in unsolicited comments or private messages to other users.
• Posts cannot tag other users, especially bulk user lists.
• Inappropriate hashtag bombing is not allowed.

5. False cultural identities

• If you have an issue with the Indigeneity or cultural identity of an account, file a report and forward it to that instance/server. Don’t hold your breath for external server sympathies though.
• The Pretendian subject is not forbidden, but keep it mature please.

6. Disallowed account types

• Personal parody, sock puppet, false celebrity, false identity, or any account made to expressly abuse, bully, dox or intimidate others are not allowed.

7. Disallowed account behaviors

• Immature and abusive posts, organized dogpiling, and anything determined by admins/moderators to be disruptive are not allowed. Ultimately as a private instance admins/moderators can overrule anything. That said, micromanagement is not our goal, so just be chill.

8. Promotion of Right-wing views is not allowed

• Promotion of Right-Wing, Conservative, Republican, Fascist, Nazi or other equally horrible political views is not allowed.

9. NSFW content requires CWs/Labels

• Per community standards, NSFW content requires Content Warnings (CWs) or labeling. Nudity, porn or gratuitous violence requires CWs/labels. Turtle Island does not require CWs/labels for other types of content. If you are in doubt, please ask.

10. If you are easily offended

• Generally speaking, if you are easily offended, Turtle Island may not be the place for you.

11. Private messaging

• Private messaging ‘Hello how are you?’ or similar with no real question or content after a followback or otherwise, like only a scammer would do, will result in an immediate report to originating instance and a TurtleIsland.social suspension.

12. Other issues

• Any other issues not covered by these rules will be settled by the sole determination of the administrators or moderators.
