Journa.host HistoryJourna.host began as a community-centered initiative supported by initial funding from The Tow-Knight Center for Entrepreneurial Journalism at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY. From its founding, it was carefully managed by journalists seeking to build a trusted professional network for the broader news community.

In 2023,
W. Jeffrey Brown and the
Fourth Estate undertook oversight of Journa.host to preserve its independence and long-term sustainability.strengthening operational continuity while upholding its core values and mission.
In March 2026, stewardship transitioned to Mike Fraser, operator of thecanadian.social, following the closure of the platform’s fiscal host and during a period of heightened political and legal uncertainty in the United States that posed risks to independent journalism platforms. The transition was designed to reinforce stability and safeguard the platform’s commitment to press freedom.
Throughout these transitions, Journa.host has remained sustained by its community. Financial requirements continue to be fulfilled primarily through crowdfunding on
Open Collective, a certified 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Administrative and supplemental support services have been provided by the Fourth Estate PBC to ensure responsible governance and operational resilience.
Journa.host maintains a strong commitment to truth, dependability, and authenticity. Measures are in place to verify the credentials of journalists, and membership on the platform symbolizes verified professional status. Professional journalists seeking to join may apply when registrations are open.
