This search engine for Mastodon instances is based on a database that gets updated by our crawler every night (CET).

Instances are considered new for 30 days after they are discovered.

When an instance has not responded to our daily checks for more than 30 days it is no longer considered in statistics and searches and it gets checked only on the first of the month, rather than daily, until it possibly responds again, or until its last succesful check is one year old; in this latter case, from that moment it gets checked only on the first day of each year.

“Random ordering” of results varies daily.

Default search criteria reflect our fondness for a decentralized and egalitarian Fediverse and our attempt to exclude instances accepting fascist, racist, sexist, ableist, sovereignist, pro-nuclear and pedopornographic contents by marking them as noxious.

Welcome to Journa.host

Journa.host is the home for working journalists and news outlets on Mastodon. It serves active and retired journalists, scholars in media studies, and a range of journalism-adjacent professionals committed to credible reporting and responsible public discourse.

Journa.host is currently closed to new account registrations.

Journa.host subscribes to the Mastodon Server Covenant.

There is no advertising, no subscription fees, and no paywalls, and your data is never shared or sold.

Journa.host History

Journa.host began as a community-centered initiative supported by initial funding from The Tow-Knight Center for Entrepreneurial Journalism at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY. From its founding, it was carefully managed by journalists seeking to build a trusted professional network for the broader news community.

Prominent founding moderators included:

In 2023, W. Jeffrey Brown and the Fourth Estate undertook oversight of Journa.host to preserve its independence and long-term sustainability.strengthening operational continuity while upholding its core values and mission.

In March 2026, stewardship transitioned to Mike Fraser, operator of thecanadian.social, following the closure of the platform’s fiscal host and during a period of heightened political and legal uncertainty in the United States that posed risks to independent journalism platforms. The transition was designed to reinforce stability and safeguard the platform’s commitment to press freedom.

Throughout these transitions, Journa.host has remained sustained by its community. Financial requirements continue to be fulfilled primarily through crowdfunding on Open Collective, a certified 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Administrative and supplemental support services have been provided by the Fourth Estate PBC to ensure responsible governance and operational resilience.

Journa.host maintains a strong commitment to truth, dependability, and authenticity. Measures are in place to verify the credentials of journalists, and membership on the platform symbolizes verified professional status. Professional journalists seeking to join may apply when registrations are open.

Moderation Policy

We maintain a balanced moderation policy that encourages a free press and free journalistic expression while enforcing rules against extremist, prohibited, and illegal content.

Hate speech is not tolerated. This includes racism, misogyny, transphobia, homophobia, and religious intolerance such as antisemitism. This list is illustrative but not exhaustive.

Our aim is to preserve responsible free expression while ensuring a safe and inclusive community for all users. Our moderation approach focuses on behavior that occurs on the journa.host platform.

You can report violations directly from an individual post, image, or profile, including spam, abusive or harmful content, inappropriate advertisements, self-harm content, and impersonation.

When making a report, please include at least a few posts that demonstrate the prohibited behavior. If additional context may assist in making a determination, include it in the comment as well.

We handle most reports within 72 hours.

Please note that we do not comment on moderation actions, and you will not be notified if a report you have made results in moderation or other action.

Additionally, not all punitive actions are externally visible. For first-time offenses, we may delete offending content, escalating to stricter measures for repeat violations.

Appeals and feedback channels are available for members.

Heck yes! With the ongoing enshittification of centralized social platforms, we know that billionaires don't have our best interests at heart. The solution is decentralized social platforms, where we're not subject to their whims.

Who's running this thing?

In November 2022, Podvibes was started by audio fiction creator Nathan Lunsford as a welcome place for those abandoning Xitter. In November 2023, it was acquired by Evo Terra, curator of The End, who is happy to keep this train running. Welcome all, and especially those who love to listen to or create audio fiction!

Hello friend and thank you for checking out Beach City, our peaceful beach-side sanctuary on the internet. Beach City is owned and operated by Pandora Parrot and is a fully managed server hosted by masto.host

Beach City was founded in August, 2018 as a small highly connected private instance for people that knew each other, either online or in person. It has since both grown and shrunk, but always kept that cozy and small atmosphere that has been its primary characteristic since the beginning.

If you wanna join us, strike up a conversation with Pandora Parrot or another of our users. If you're a friend of theirs, they might just help you get an invite! Anonymous applications on the main page are usually rejected, so definitely message or email us to have a conversation if you would like to join!

We promise to do everything we can to avoid negatively impacting your social media experience. We will immediately block every single example of overt and explicit racism, homophobia, transphobia, etc. We will be judicious about other forms of behavior we find unpleasant. We'll allow you to manage that yourselves, using your own personal block lists and mute lists. This is a "free speech" instance in that all speech and expression that is not bigoted, abusive, or illegal under U.S. law is permitted.

This instance was founded on the principles that were developed in anti-censorship, pro-expression-anti-repression, and pro-fiction movements on other sites, that are suppressed on corporate social media by a combination of reactionary users and poor management and moderation.

  2. TOPIC: vis.social is a topical server focused particularly on SciArt, SciComm, Data, Visualization, Creative Coding and related topics. There is no reporting of “off-topic” posts, but the central idea of the server is to gather a community around these shared interests.
  3. LANGUAGE: English is the common language of the instance. Other languages are welcome, but please be kind and post English translations so that we can all read your posts.
  4. INCLUSION: We want everyone to feel welcome, safe, and respected. This is a free service. Please be welcoming and kind to everyone, especially when you have a difference of opinion. Then, be *extra* kind. :-)
  5. AI Images: Please do not use vis.social to share your creations from text-to-image tools such as MidJourney or Stable Diffusion. We welcome critical discussion of these tools, particularly about the legal and ethical issues surrounding these tools and the implications for artists and society
  6. No NFTs: We know many people involved in computational art sell NFTs. However, on vis.social we’ve made the decision that we don’t want to be involved in NFTs. So we’d love to see your art, but we ask that you don’t post your NFTs here.
  7. No bots or AI agents.
  8. CWs: the moderation team may ask you to add CW's to off-topic posts that contain photos or text about food, alcohol, and other topics, in an attempt to be a more inclusive and welcoming instance. On our ToDo-list: writing about why we ask this.
  9. CW on AI topics. Please add CW for posts about AI, especially tools like ChatGPT.

Long description
一个给受vystopia困扰的moral vegan们一个抱团取暖、喘息恢复的网络小角落。

因为国内各种平台上都不知道会遇到什么奇怪的人于是就搭建了，技术小白折腾了两天，刚起步还不知道会不会有人用，就先这样吧。

目前还在建设中，关于站点名字、规则等，都可以提建议，欢迎心灵饱受摧残的moral vegan们入住，恢复了我们再继续努力生活，改变点什么！
Instance rules
  1. 给受vystopia困扰的ethical/moral vegan们一个可以喘息恢复的小角落（小小互联网安慰地？），也就是说，只能ethical/moral vegan—— 得关心动物并且知行合一地从自己的饮食生活上已经做出了变化！
  2. 该实例没有连接到联邦网络，比较封闭，以避免遭遇trigger（划去） 小白站主后来发现只要搭建好就已经是接入联邦网络了TwT，所以大家也可以和其他站点的互相关注互动啦，但是如果不想被奇怪的人骚扰可锁账号（开启后他人关注你需要你的同意），并善用屏蔽功能。
  3. 请不要在站内公轴发送很trigger的内容！善用CW（内容警告）。
  4. 申请注册请描述一下自己的vegan情况。 如果没有通过的话，大概是因为写的申请内容不太能确定是不是vegan——实在不好意思，因为建站初衷就是想做一个只有vegan的站点，如果出于想要了解的目的可以试试其他地方！——除此之外的原因的话，就是你没有认证邮箱！没有申请邮箱的话通过了申请也没法成功，也没法送到通知邮件。 以及，本站可以邀请码注册！有朋友已经在的话可以要一个邀请码w就不用等管理员通过啦！
