This search engine for Mastodon instances is based on a database that gets updated by our crawler every night (CET).

Instances are considered new for 30 days after they are discovered.

When an instance has not responded to our daily checks for more than 30 days it is no longer considered in statistics and searches and it gets checked only on the first of the month, rather than daily, until it possibly responds again, or until its last succesful check is one year old; in this latter case, from that moment it gets checked only on the first day of each year.

“Random ordering” of results varies daily.

Default search criteria reflect our fondness for a decentralized and egalitarian Fediverse and our attempt to exclude instances accepting fascist, racist, sexist, ableist, sovereignist, pro-nuclear and pedopornographic contents by marking them as noxious.

Privacy policy

What will we do with your data? Nothing. How will you be influenced by advertisers? You won't; brands and non-humans (other than fun/useful bots) are banned. How will we aggregate your data in order to improve your service… none of that.

We will never share your data with anyone else, except in the case of valid legal requests if it comes to that. (Hopefully it won't come to that!)

Understand though that this instance is run by me and my friends, and (as is the case with all Mastodon servers) we potentially have access to your data, including DMs. The back-end is also not encrypted. If this is not okay with you, this might not be the instance for you.

Also, for truly private data sent between two people, Mastodon offers no E2E encryption. So use Signal or WhatsApp for the things you really want to be private.

More privacy measures on Free Radical:

  • Our robots.txt file asks crawlers not to explore the site.
  • HTTPS is used everywhere thanks to Let's Encrypt.
  • No ads or trackers.
  • Links are direct URLs rather than tracking redirects.

  1. This is purely a practical matter. These instances have been decent neighbors.
  2. I took a poll of local users, and the overwhelming response was that Free Radical residents wanted to preemptively defederate from Gab and its friends.

Compliance

We are not subject to either the CCPA or GDPR. While we support privacy laws and strive to meet or exceed the requirements of the major ones we know about, they do not apply to us. As such, we will not reply to requests regarding them.

This is a "free speech" instance in that all speech and expression that is not bigoted, abusive, or illegal under U.S. law is permitted.

This instance was founded on the principles that were developed in anti-censorship, pro-expression-anti-repression, and pro-fiction movements on other sites, that are suppressed on corporate social media by a combination of reactionary users and poor management and moderation.

  5. Respect mods and each other. Mods are volunteers, not punching bags or therapists. Treat everyone like humans with feelings. If that’s too much, there are plenty of places online where people yell back.
  6. No sock puppets or shenanigans. Don’t make fake accounts to agree with yourself, dodge bans, or start drama. This isn’t a one-man show. One account per person. Be real or be gone.

Many on the fediverse are trying to make social media kinder, more personal, and more accessible. Here are some things you can do to help.



  • Use content warnings liberally.

    Commonly tagged subjects include:

    • Common phobias, and triggers (spiders, blood, gross stuff, trauma, etc)
    • Politics (often: “pol”)
    • Hot takes (opinions delivered on the spot with little thought, often worded in a provocative and generalising manner)
    • Selfies
    • Public displays of affection, affectionate subtoots (often: “pda”)
    • Food
    • Money
    • Family
    • Health
    • Mental health in particular (often: “mh”)
    • Negativity
    • Negativity about oneself in particular (often: “self neg”)

    Additionally, when a lot of people are talking about one subject, it’s polite to tag that subject, using the CW as a subject field of sorts. It is also polite to tag long posts and threads similarly.

    Content warnings are invaluable in letting people decide if and when to deal with subjects that may be harmful or exhausting to them.

    It is helpful to augment a CW, indicating if it is positive (+), negative (-), a joke, a shitpost, etc. More context is always better.



  • Strive for accessibility

    You can add a caption to images or videos you upload. This helps people with sight impairments get the context of your post. Writing a good, concise caption is an art but any caption is better than none!

    Another practice that helps is spelling hashtags composed of several words #LikeThis with capital letters, as opposed to #likethis. This helps screen-reader software read them correctly.

  • Avoid using a crossposter.

    These programs or services broadcast your posts from one network to another and back, usually between Twitter and a fediverse server like Chitter. They are controversial across the fediverse. A common criticism is that it feels like the person is “not really there,” reacting to things happening on another network entirely, and broadcasting Twitter culture, which many have come to the fediverse to avoid.

    If you want to use one despite this, it is polite to set it not to post remote posts as public, and even to set a CW on them indicating where the posts originated.


It is up to each one of us whether we want to follow these guidelines, but administrative action may be taken against members behaving counter to them to the point of disturbing others, and continuing to do so after being asked to change their behaviour.

Chitter and all of its data are hosted with Hetzner in Falkenstein, Germany.

Database backups are also stored at codl's home, in France.

DNS for the chitter.xyz domain is hosted with Route 53 from Amazon Web Services.

Chitter's status site at status.chitter.xyz is hosted with Netlify. Your browser will also contact updown.io for live status data, and S3 from Amazon Web Services for admin notices.

Keep in mind also that, depending on your post privacy settings and on who follows you, your posts and interactions may be shared with many third party instances hosted all over the world.

  1. This is a safe and welcoming community. Abusive or antisocial behaviour will not be tolerated.
  2. In particular, no hate speech or bigotry, including dogwhistles (implicit but deliberate discrimination through coded language).
  3. No posting others' personal information or private exchanges without permission.
  4. Do not continue to engage a person, or incite others to do so, after they have requested otherwise.
  5. No content that is illegal in the United Kingdom, Germany, or France. This includes "grey area" content such as sexualized, artistic depictions of minors.
  6. Sexual or sexually suggestive content must be tagged as such, with a clear content warning. Avatars and profile banners must be clean.
  7. Same goes for artistic depictions of graphic violence or gore. Real pictures and recordings of gore and violence are generally not acceptable, you better have a really good reason. Shock value is not a good reason.
  8. Bots are OK as long as they don't post to the public TL more than twice a day and don't interact with folks out of the blue. That means no followbots.
  9. When in doubt about something you'd like to post, ask a mod. When in doubt about something you saw posted, report liberally.
  10. We may take administrative action for reasons not listed here.
