This is a Mastodon server for discussing neuroscience and related topics. We welcome all humans who are interested in how the nervous system works. This includes research neuroscientists in academia and industry as well as artists, educators, students, and others who are exploring neuroscience in their life and work.

Although this server is focused on neuroscience, you're open to post about other topics of interest as well. The vibe of this server is a cafe conversation, where the topic might shift from fly connectomics to issues in psychiatry to shared knitting hobbies. Let's get to know each other!

Longevity of the server

We commit to maintaining this server for the foreseeable future. The server itself is hosted on a computer through Hertzner which is backed up daily to prevent data loss. We can cover the current server costs (about $50 / month), but if the server needs to scale further we will ask for donations. We currently anticipate maintaining this server for years. However, in the case that we need to close the server down, we will provide at least 3 months notice to give you time to migrate.

Domain blocking policy

Our goal in blocking domains is to reduce attacks on users as well as remove hateful content from the federated timeline. We will add new domains to the block list by monitoring #fediblock, the block lists of similar servers, and based on user reports.

Running a digital space for Potsdams Left, that is gladly used by everyone, requires the aid of the people that move within it. Communicate respectfully and take care of each other. General info

Watch out, we're running an experimental fork of Mastodon. See further down below for details.

This instance is a safe space for queer and/or neurodivergent people. We also strive to become one for the BIPOC, Romani, and other marginalized subgroups of the LGBTQ+ community (see disclaimer below). If you have an issue with that, don't even bother applying for an account. In addition to the bigotry clause in the rule list, we have a zero tolerance policy against any form of fascism and/or authoritarianism. This includes, but is not limited to, nazis and tankies. We are primarily English and German speaking, but other languages are welcome, too. Our main interests are:

• Being gay on the Internet
• Touching computers
• Political discourse about queerness, neurodivergence, and other topics about marginalized people
• Ending capitalism

Disclaimer for BIPOC, Romani, and other ethnic minorities: This instance, like most others unfortunately, is hopelessly white. I acknowledge this is a problem and would love to do something about it. Feel free to get in touch with me if you have any suggestions to make this place more welcoming to you; i will try my best to accommodate for your needs. Nobody here has sinister intentions, but we are not immune to systemic racism.

Content policy details

Although the name might admittedly suggest otherwise, this is generally not an NSFW-focused instance. However, lewd content of any kind is totally allowed so long as you use appropriate content warnings and respect other people's boundaries. We also explicitly welcome sex workers and lewd alt accounts! Just keep in mind that if you explicitly seek a community centered around sexual topics, this might not be the instance you've been looking for.

Naturally, any depictions of minors in a sexual context will be deleted on sight, period. This phrasing is intentionally kept vague because if you even have to think about whether something would fall under that rule, you definitely shouldn't post it. So-called “MAPs” can fuck right off.

The fediverse is generally not too fond of corporate advertising, and girldick.gay sure is no exception: We don't tolerate any brands except non-profits, small personal businesses, and worker unions. The same applies to defending them. Furthermore, don't post anything that might be considered spam or otherwise unwanted, including excessive self promotion.

If you don't acknowledge the inherent problems with anything related to blockchain technology (including, but not limited to, cryptocurrencies and NFTs), you won't have a good time on here. Talking uncritically positive about that stuff is strongly discouraged, and will likely get you banned if you give off cryptobro vibes.

Moderation & federation

We decide the consequences for rule violations on a case-by-case basis, depending on severity and context. As such, the outcome can be anything between a friendly notice and a permanent ban. We are generally stricter than more popular instances like, say, mastodon.social, because this is supposed to be a cozy little place just for us. This is not the place to debate whether we deserve human rights.

Other instances whose admin either violates these rules themselves or tolerates their users doing so will be defederated entirely. Instances with poor moderation will be either limited or suspended, depending on the severity of the situation.

Technical details

We are running nyastodon, our own custom fork of Mastodon based on glitch-soc and Catstodon.

Note that this is bleeding edge software with some fun quirks compared to vanilla Mastodon, so you might encounter rough spots here and there. The biggest difference is probably support for emoji reactions, which is actually in the process of being merged into upstream right now.

This instance lives in a VM hosted on a Hetzner dedicated server with full disk encryption. I'm doing daily encrypted backups with a retention period of up to 4 weeks. In spite of all odds, the site actually has reasonable uptime and I usually post a notice before doing planned maintenance (which mostly happens late at night in the CET/CEST time zone).

1. Absolutely no bigotry against marginalized/repressed groups; including, but not limited to, homophobia, trans-/enbyphobia, misogyny, racism, classism, ableism, etc. As a general rule, don't discriminate against anyone further down the social ladder or, in other words, just don't be an asshole.

3. No illegal content, specifically anything illegal under the jurisdiction of Germany. Yes, be gay do crime, but i don't have the resources to fight legal battles just for girldick.gay to stay online.
4. Provide alt text for images and videos
5. Use content warnings where appropriate. For example: selfie/ec (eye contact), mh (mental health), sh (self harm), etc. You get the idea.
6. Give a hint as to what kind of person you are when signing up. I can't afford to run an instance that needs 24/7 monitoring and moderation, so please reference your website/twitter/previous fediverse account or any other indication that you might fit in this community.
7. Don't be completely inactive. New accounts should at the very least set up their profile after being accepted; and i reserve the right to delete those that don't after a reasonable time.

Threads

SocialBC has made the decision to block connections (Federation) with Threads.net. This was done in response to the policy and moderation changes announced by Mark Zuckerberg in January 2025. Threads is also likely to soon be on the IFTAS list of blocked servers. We use the IFTAS service to automatically update block lists that protect our server and users from abusive and illegal content. The following is a quote from the IFTAS FediCheck update of January 15, 2024.

"We are aware of growing community concerns around Meta’s threads.net domain, which is approaching the 51% threshold for inclusion on the CARIAD list. If more of our observed servers choose to block this domain, it will likely cross the 51% and possibly the 66% threshold in the coming weeks, which may then be reflected on your server.

To accommodate varying approaches, we are temporarily withholding the domain from the list until February 17, 2025. If you wish to remain connected to threads.net, please disable automatic updates for your server before this date by visiting cariad.fedicheck.iftas.org and disabling automatic push to your server."

As an inclusive and proactive space, SocialBC has chosen to prioritize the health and safety of all current and future members and will block Threads.net as of 9AM January 20, 2025 until such time that policies at Meta change.

What Is This Place

Our intent is to create community driven, grassroots, #OpenSocialWeb spaces for all people that call British Columbia - or the First Nations territories it owes its existence to - home. This space is connected to Bluesky through services like Bridgy Fed.

Yes, we said "spaces"! In time, we can envision and would like to encourage groups and communities within British Columbia to create their own Mastodon/Fediverse spaces using this space as an example and possibly under the 'umbrella' of SOSSBC and socialbc.ca.

Moderation and General Outlook

This is a lightly moderated instance. We commit to be open and transparent on any moderation decisions. We expect people to be civilized. We do not condone or accept any violence or illegal behaviour and will block instances without warning that appear on Fediverse community block management lists like IFTAS. This is done both for your safety and protection but also to ensure we adhere to the local laws and regulations on hate speech and other online content.

We welcome all people and strive to make a safe space. We do not tolerate dogpiling, spamming, trolling, or other forms of online or offline harassment including racist, and other discriminatory content. We follow the Mastodon Server Covenant.

We do not limit people for expressing their views in ways that may be challenging but we strongly encourage people to use the "Content Warning" features built into Mastodon to protect others from unnecessary or unintended harm. Some simple guidelines for conduct are in the "Server Rules" below. We strongly encourage the use of alt-text for media, use @PleaseCaptionBot for helpful reminders!

People and organizations are welcome to use socialbc.ca to create automated accounts or "bots" for news, weather, emergency services, and other useful public information.

Some guidelines:

• All bot accounts must have "This is a bot account" checked in its settings.

• "Automatic Post Deletion" must be set to a maximum age of one month. (Pinned and DMs not included)

Pseudonyms or Parody Accounts

Pseudonymous accounts for activism, information, and entertainment are OK in general as are parody accounts but any account found to be in violation of expectations for civil behaviour, harassment, dogpiling, etc., or are found to be disseminating false or misleading information may face suspension.

First Nations and Indigenous Peoples

The people behind socialbc.ca and the Society of Open Social Servers of BC deeply acknowledge that we are conducting this endeavour on and for people on the Traditional and often un-ceded Territories of Indigenous Peoples in the colonial province of British Columbia, Canada on Turtle Island.

It's SOSSBC's goal to promote the use of non-corporate, community-driven, grassroots spaces.

To put it another way, our goal is not to be the one and only Open Social Web or Mastodon instance in BC for all people to use, but rather to be a stepping stone for people in different communities to find each other but also to find each other in the same community and perhaps in time create their own spaces in the Fediverse.

Community-run instances like this one often get too big to be manageable by volunteer teams so the best way to grow the Fediverse is with the proliferation of regional or interest based instances. We at socialbc.ca want to encourage that.

We are aiming to run an inclusive photography community in a wee corner of the fediverse! While we are photography focused, nothing is "off topic" here! We don't want to forget the person in "a person who takes photographs". (That's what our domain means!) Let your freak shine!

• photog.social is a separate and independent instance and is not affiliated with the Mastodon organization. We are not corporate-owned social media 🎊

Unavailable Content and Instance Moderation

Some instances we have chosen to remove from our federated timeline. You can still follow accounts on these instances and if you follow a user on one of the instances that does not appear on our federated timeline, their posts will show in your personal timeline. These are mainly instances that tend to be busy and/or are known for overloading our federated timeline with posts.

Some instances we have chosen to block outright. Most of these instances are full of illegal content, hate speech, and more. We've also blocked instances that have run harassment campaigns against others in the past. You will NOT be able to interact with these instances from our instance.

English Language Only

Effective from September 2023, accounts with non-English information in their profiles will be suspended. This measure addresses the surge of fake accounts promoting SPAM in other languages. Our admin team is proficient in English moderation, making it the exclusive language for our platform.

Server Blocking

We block instances promoting extreme political views (both far-right and far-left) due to their potential for abusive tactics and hate speech promotion. SPAM

Strictly prohibited. Accounts suspected of SPAM will be banned immediately. Maintaining the server's reputation is paramount. We emphasize personal interactions and robust moderation to prevent SPAM, which is detrimental to our and your reputation. Brand awareness works on Mastodon through one on one interactions and genuine content, not SPAM advertising.

Prohibition of Gambling and Betting Activities

We enforce a strict ban on all forms of gambling, gaming for money, betting, or related activities. This encompasses sharing links to gambling sites, discussing or promoting betting strategies, organizing betting pools, and any advertisements or sponsorships related to gambling. Violations may lead to warnings or bans, depending on the severity.

New Rule: Regulation of SPAM Content for Brands and Professionals

Link posting SPAM bots will not be tolerated. It doesn't work here. It harms the server. Build your own server or add ActivityPub to your website if you want this kind of engagement. This is an exploit pure and simple and we do not tolerate it.
