About This Search Engine

This search engine for Mastodon instances is based on a database that gets updated by our crawler every night (CET).

Instances are considered new for 30 days after they are discovered (if you already have an account on the Fediverse and want to receive one daily post with a summary of the new Mastodon instances that our crawler discovers daily, you can follow @nmiab@kolektiva.social; alternatively, you can also view them here).

When an instance has not responded to our daily checks for more than 30 days it is no longer considered in statistics and searches and it gets checked only on the first of the month, rather than daily, until it possibly responds again, or until its last succesful check is one year old; in this latter case, from that moment it gets checked only on the first day of each year.

“Random ordering” of results varies daily.

Default search criteria reflect our fondness for a decentralized and egalitarian Fediverse and our attempt to exclude instances accepting fascist, racist, sexist, ableist, sovereignist, pro-nuclear and pedopornographic contents by marking them as noxious.

If your instance is behind a web firewall such as Anubis or Cloudflare, and you want it to be listed here, you must configure the firewall to allow our bot, which makes no more than a dozen HTTP requests per day, to connect to your instance, by whitelisting it by User-Agent and/or IP address. Our bot’s User-Agent is mastodon.help; the IP address from which it makes requests is the same as this site’s, 65.108.133.80.

  1. Save the Drama for Literally Anywhere Else. This isn’t your personal soapbox or reality show confessional. No feuds, no vague-posting, no passive-aggressive nonsense. If you want chaos, try group texts or family dinners.
  2. Don’t be a bigot, creep, or bully. No racism, sexism, harassment, or “just joking” nonsense. If your personality is built on making others feel awful, please trip on your keyboard exiting. Chatmosphere’s for decent humans—or at least good impersonators.
  3. No spam. Not the edible kind—we love that salty block. Bots, scams, and junk posts get tossed into the fjord. If your message sounds like a Nigerian prince or a broken toaster wrote it, it’s gone.
  4. No illegal activity. Don’t use Chatmosphere to commit, plan, or hint at crimes. We’re not accomplices or cellmates. This server won’t go down with you. And no, we’re definitely not picking up the soap.
  5. Respect mods and each other. Mods are volunteers, not punching bags or therapists. Treat everyone like humans with feelings. If that’s too much, there are plenty of places online where people yell back.
  6. No sock puppets or shenanigans. Don’t make fake accounts to agree with yourself, dodge bans, or start drama. This isn’t a one-man show. One account per person. Be real or be gone.
  7. Think before you post. If your inner voice says “bad idea,” listen. Ask: Is it helpful? Necessary? Will I look like I fell out of a 2007 Reddit thread? If yes to any, rewrite or don’t post. You’re welcome.
  8. It’s okay to disagree (even debate). Just don’t turn it into a five-alarm dumpster fire. Bring your opinions, not the fire hose. Agree, disagree, eye-roll—but don’t torch the place. We like sparks, not infernos.
  9. We make, break, and change rules. Rules can change anytime—sometimes in Gregorian chant. Violations may cause: suspensions, bans, strong GIFs, digital yeeting, or us telling your mom. You’ve been warned.

A community of people who are fighting against car dominance in San Francisco and beyond and also have various other interests.

Expectations for people on this server

  1. This server is invite-only, consisting of people who are part of a community of transportation advocates centered in the Bay Area, who also know each other off of the Internet. If you know people on this server IRL, you can ask for an invite.
  2. We don’t tolerate any form of reactionary bigotry: no nazis, no TERFs or transphobes, no racists, etc.
  3. Generally, treat people within this server and related communities with respect. Rule 2 is higher priority than this rule. We also don’t expect you to be polite to, say, someone being racist. But if you make well-moderated servers that we have close ties with want to defederate with us, consider how you are affecting other people on the server.
  4. Most of us are somewhere on the left politically. We don’t have strong ideological requirements, but if your politics are far from those of people on the server, this might not be the server for you.
  5. We mostly want to reduce the use of cars and replace them with better forms of transportation. We don’t require you to be totally car free to use this server, but you should be on board with reducing car dependency.

Content warnings

Please put images of violence (e.g. a video of you being hit by a car) behind a CW.

Similarly, anything that would be uncomfortable to show up on your feed on, say, the bus, should be behind a CW.

In general though we see content warnings as a tool that you may choose to use in different ways. Someone may choose to put something behind a CW, but you don’t have to. In particular, you might see someone putting their personal experiences of experiencing racism behind a content warning, but that does not mean that it’s an expectation of this server.

Server Administration

The plan is to keep the server up indefinitely. Currently two people have access to the server infrastructure, and the intention is that there will always be at least two people who can run the server.

If circumstances change and it becomes necessary to entirely shut it down, we will give three months notice. If it makes sense, and the members of the server are fine with that, we would be willing to transfer ownership to a member of the server instead.

In general, we aim to make server decisions by consensus, and allow people to be as involved in the running of the server as they want to be.

Defederation policies

We will make any new and unexpected decisions by consensus, but to avoid having a discussion every time something comes up, we have already decided anyone can defederate from servers that are a danger to the people on the server or the server infrastructure. This includes:

  • Servers that permit CSAM (child sexual abuse material) or content that resembles such
  • Servers that host fascists or other political movements that are actively hostile and dangerous to our members
  • Servers that host malware, conduct DDOS attacks, or otherwise interfere with the functioning of this server
  • So-called “free speech” servers or servers with such poor moderation that they effectively fall into one of the previous categories

  2. Treat people on this server and in your online community with respect. This is lower priority than rule 1.
