About This Search Engine

This search engine for Mastodon instances is based on a database that gets updated by our crawler every night (CET).

Instances are considered new for 30 days after they are discovered (if you already have an account on the Fediverse and want to receive one daily post with a summary of the new Mastodon instances that our crawler discovers daily, you can follow @nmiab@kolektiva.social; alternatively, you can also view them here).

When an instance has not responded to our daily checks for more than 30 days it is no longer considered in statistics and searches and it gets checked only on the first of the month, rather than daily, until it possibly responds again, or until its last succesful check is one year old; in this latter case, from that moment it gets checked only on the first day of each year.

“Random ordering” of results varies daily.

Default search criteria reflect our fondness for a decentralized and egalitarian Fediverse and our attempt to exclude instances accepting fascist, racist, sexist, ableist, sovereignist, pro-nuclear and pedopornographic contents by marking them as noxious.

If your instance is behind a web firewall such as Anubis or Cloudflare, and you want it to be listed here, you must configure the firewall to allow our bot, which makes no more than a dozen HTTP requests per day, to connect to your instance, by whitelisting it by User-Agent and/or IP address. Our bot’s User-Agent is mastodon.help; the IP address from which it makes requests is the same as this site’s, 65.108.133.80.

We wanted to have a place to expand the community that has formed around the Tech Pod. Feel free to make this your main home on the Fediverse, we're not requiring that anyone back the Patreon or whatever to get access. Signups will remain on for the time being, just to limit the impact new accounts have on perf.

If, for some reason, we decide to shut down the Mastodon, we will give users here at least three months notice before we do.

Fediverse Friendly Moderation Covenant

This instance commits to the following

1. Administration and Moderation will be handled as neutral as possible

Reports and widespread information on specific instances (often known as bad actors) will be verified and actions might be taken as necessary.

2. Actions taken will respond to the bare minimum to keep the network operating and not influence the ability of the instances users to connect to other people

  • If another instance spreads media content of questionable legality for the region the current instance is operating from, these files might be rejected from being saved.
  • If another instance is sharing hateful messages that impact local users, there might be consideration of silencing that specific instance from being visible in timelines. If users follow and/or wish to follow users on the target instance, they are still free to do so.
  • If another instance is posting content illegal in the local instance operation region or actively posts content attacking local users, a full instance block might be the last resort.

3. Communication before Actions

If any of the above behaviors start to surface from a given instance, the moderation of the local instance will attempt to inform the moderation/administration of that instance and resolve the problems coming from there. Only if no communication succeeded or no results that resolved issues came forth, actions will be taken towards that instance.

4. We won't recommend blocks

Blocklists and block recommendations as an information source are taken for granted but lack accurate verification. Instead of using these options to publicly announce instances of questionable intent, we will inform local users of such, with the reminder of possible personal options for hiding content that might impact their experience of the network.

5. No Guilt-by-Association/Federation

If we have applied any action against Instance X, an Instance Y that federates with them will not get the same judgement applied to them. A natural connection, as by the networks design, does not imply shared interests and thus doesn't warrant the same moderation methods.

Regardless of all given points above, in special cases the instance moderation/administration might still opt to block an instance, while this is tried to be avoided at most.

Registrations

To create an account on this instance, you must:

  • Be 18+ years old. (I'm sorry, I don't want to be responsible for minors!)
  • Not be referring to yourself as a "refugee" for switching social media websites. If you don't understand why that's a problem, read this.
  • Provide a link to your current account(s), demonstrating compliance with this instance's rules, as well as a decent balance between boosts, replies, and original posts. Basically, this.
  • Have a cute potential username in mind. The shorter and sweeter, the better! Bonus points for all lowercase letters, because fuck capitalism, or something like that.
  • Be willing to deal with occasional growing pains as we find our footing. I'm doing my best, but as a first-time admin, I can't promise that the ride will never be bumpy!

Server Software

This instance is currently running glitch-soc, a friendly fork of Yastodon that adds quite a few cool features at the cost of potentially being less stable. It's a fun tradeoff!

One of the many perks of Glitch is that it lets us easily change variables such as the per-post character limit, so I've gone ahead and cranked all of those numbers up. (Click to expand this section to see what they are.)

  • Maximum characters per post = 8000
  • Maximum number of pinned posts = 10
  • Maximum characters in profile bio = 2000
  • Maximum number of profile data fields = 10
  • Maximum characters in display name = 60
  • Maximum number of options per poll = 60
  • Maximum characters per poll option = 200

Adjusting these limits is no problem at all, so if you're a Cutie Citizen and want one (or more) of them increased, don't hesitate to ask!

In the near future, I plan to add a few personal code changes on top of Glitch. Nothing too fancy, just some things to make the server even cuter, at the cost of potentially being even less stable. Just kidding... unless... 😅​

Server Costs

This instance is powered by a few third-party services, all of which were selected with technical, economical, and environmental sustainability in mind. (Click to expand this section for more details and a cost breakdown.)

  • Hetzner provides our VPS (virtual private server; hosted at a data center in Oregon, USA) and daily backups. Cost per month: $17.80
  • Storj provides object storage (for media files uploaded to this instance) on their global distributed network. Cost per month: $7.27
  • Porkbun is our domain name registrar and email (SMTP) provider. They're based in Oregon, USA. Cost per month: $3.33

The total cost of running this server is currently 28.40 USD per month, and it's only going to go up from here. More significantly, though, that number doesn't account for the time and effort that goes into behind-the-scenes technical administration and content moderation. It's a lot of work, but I think the results are going to be worth it - we're in this for the long haul. 🥰
