About This Search Engine

This search engine for Mastodon instances is based on a database that gets updated by our crawler every night (CET).

Instances are considered new for 30 days after they are discovered (if you already have an account on the Fediverse and want to receive one daily post with a summary of the new Mastodon instances that our crawler discovers daily, you can follow @nmiab@kolektiva.social; alternatively, you can also view them here).

When an instance has not responded to our daily checks for more than 30 days it is no longer considered in statistics and searches and it gets checked only on the first of the month, rather than daily, until it possibly responds again, or until its last succesful check is one year old; in this latter case, from that moment it gets checked only on the first day of each year.

“Random ordering” of results varies daily.

Default search criteria reflect our fondness for a decentralized and egalitarian Fediverse and our attempt to exclude instances accepting fascist, racist, sexist, ableist, sovereignist, pro-nuclear and pedopornographic contents by marking them as noxious.

If your instance is behind a web firewall such as Anubis or Cloudflare, and you want it to be listed here, you must configure the firewall to allow our bot, which makes no more than a dozen HTTP requests per day, to connect to your instance, by whitelisting it by User-Agent and/or IP address. Our bot’s User-Agent is mastodon.help; the IP address from which it makes requests is the same as this site’s, 65.108.133.80.

About this server

This is a Norwegian mastodon instance and safe haven for social exchange between tech people from the University of Oslo, Norway. Despite that, this site has no affiliation nor it belongs to the University of Oslo.

It is also opened for other tech people and/or friends from around the world, but we have restrictions to posts in other languages (check our rules).

The name "babb" is because of the love for good kebabs that we share at USIT (University Center for Information Technology at the University of Oslo. On our team, we call them affectionally "babb".

It came to us that "babbe" is used pejoratively for immigrants in Sweden - which is kinda ironic, since the admin of this site has indeed and proudly, a foreign background.

All of our users can either identify themselves as @user@babb.no, @user@mastodon.babb.no and @user@mastodon.oslo.no.

Mastodon Server Covenant

We adhere 100% to the Mastodon Server Covenant. No racism, gender discrimination or anti-semitism will be tolerated.

We have daily backups, and @Gaelle has also access to the server infrastructure in case of emergency.

Transparency

This server runs on a kubernetes cluster with 6 nodes, 3 masters and 3 workers. Each machine has 14gb ram, but we might upgrade them accordingly should there be need for that.

Regardless of political orientation, our moderators try to moderate all posts equally and objectively in accordance with our server rules. Of course, this is only possible for languages that we understand - therefore only German and English are possible as languages on our instances. Federation with Meta (Facebook) / Instagram

Our servers have preemptively blocked federation with threads.net. This rule might be changed in the future, when we know how threads.net implements federation via ActivityPub and how they act on reports coming from the Fediverse.
