This search engine for Mastodon instances is based on a database that gets updated by our crawler every night (CET).

Instances are considered new for 30 days after they are discovered.

When an instance has not responded to our daily checks for more than 30 days it is no longer considered in statistics and searches and it gets checked only on the first of the month, rather than daily, until it possibly responds again, or until its last succesful check is one year old; in this latter case, from that moment it gets checked only on the first day of each year.

“Random ordering” of results varies daily.

Default search criteria reflect our fondness for a decentralized and egalitarian Fediverse and our attempt to exclude instances accepting fascist, racist, sexist, ableist, sovereignist, pro-nuclear and pedopornographic contents by marking them as noxious.

Scope and Audience

This policy is for users who have their accounts on layer8.space.

Our instance is only available to users for personal use. Accounts with a commercial background should look elsewhere. Promoting your own work is okay, as long as it is not the focus of your account.

Intent and Remedies

Our guiding principle for remedies is that of intent and willingness to correct ones own behavior. It is okay if you fuck up. But we expect you to correct your behavior as soon as we point it out.

Please approach the moderation team with any issues or questions about this policy, or any other policy in this document. We're always happy to expand in the rationale of these policies and provide advice about being excellent to each other.

If you disagree and reject our requests to fix your behavior, maybe this isn't the right instance for you.

Banned Content

Content that is illegal in Germany is subject to suspensions.

Prohibited Content

We have a zero-tolerance policy against bigoted behavior. This especially includes, but is not limited to racism, sexism, xenophobia, antisemitism, islamophobia and transphobia.

This Instance is sometimes viewed in corporate environments, so all avatars and profile headers should be held in a SFW ("Safe for Work") manner.

Do not argue for the existence or relevance of reverse-racism or reverse-sexism. Racism and sexism are deep structural issues with culture and not the expression of single persons.

Crossposting

Crossposting from other social media accounts like your personal Twitter is considered no problem. But the posts which are visible in the instance timeline should be your own and not something like Retweets.

What is Pan?

Pan is a node of the Fediverse, an ensemble independent servers/communities/nodes that communicate among each others.

Our values

  • stand strongly against Capitalism as an economic model and the egoistic Neo-Liberal mentality
  • fight against Fascism and authoritarian exercises of power
  • believe in the right of gender auto-determination, and we condemn any kind of gender discrimination
  • support and share any effort carried out in a choral, horizontal, and collective perspective

The story of this server

Tommi, the founder and administrator of this instance, has been a long time Fediverse enthusiastic user.

During Scambi Festival 2022, he invited the Italian collective Etica Digitale to host a Lab about it, and for the occasion we deployed a temporary, experimental Mastodon server.

In November 2022 we decided to step up the game, and found a more stable and meaningful instance. We named it Pan. This instance is born out of the necessity of creating a cozy, friendly, young, enthusiastic, and tight community of people who believe in the same values and have some things in common.

Why this name?

Scambi Festival’s staff invented Paneurethic, a neologism synthesizing the essence of our purposes and our values. In a hurry to decide how to name our community, our fabulous Lea and Marghe suggested Pan, from the ancient Greek Πάν (Everything). This terms reflects the chaotic vortex of our collective action, while sharing the root of our neologism.

But how does the pan.rent domain name comes into play?
While scrolling through all the possible domain names, Tommi stumbled upon this TLD, and he could not avoid thinking about his favorite musical ever, the 1996

We rigorously adhere to the Mastodon Server Covenant. The admin team actively addresses reports, offering guidance and, if necessary, immediate intervention in cases of abuse.

English Language Only

Effective from September 2023, accounts with non-English information in their profiles will be suspended. This measure addresses the surge of fake accounts promoting SPAM in other languages. Our admin team is proficient in English moderation, making it the exclusive language for our platform.

Server Blocking

We block instances promoting extreme political views (both far-right and far-left) due to their potential for abusive tactics and hate speech promotion. Additionally, instances with incompatible rules or technical issues that affect our server's functionality are subject to blocking. This includes, but is not limited to, kink, porn, anti-crypto, and anti-capitalist themed servers.

SPAM

Strictly prohibited. Accounts suspected of SPAM will be banned immediately. Maintaining the server's reputation is paramount. We emphasize personal interactions and robust moderation to prevent SPAM, which is detrimental to our and your reputation. Brand awareness works on Mastodon through one on one interactions and genuine content, not SPAM advertising.

Prohibition of Gambling and Betting Activities

We enforce a strict ban on all forms of gambling, gaming for money, betting, or related activities. This encompasses sharing links to gambling sites, discussing or promoting betting strategies, organizing betting pools, and any advertisements or sponsorships related to gambling. Violations may lead to warnings or bans, depending on the severity.

New Rule: Regulation of SPAM Content for Brands and Professionals

Link posting SPAM bots will not be tolerated. It doesn't work here. It harms the server. Build your own server or add ActivityPub to your website if you want this kind of engagement. This is an exploit pure and simple and we do not tolerate it.

Engagement and Authenticity



  1. Purposeful Engagement: Content must engage the Mastodon community or use the ActivityPub protocol. Purely promotional content without meaningful interaction is SPAM.



  2. Authenticity and Relevance: Posts should be authentic, relevant, and add value. Repetitive, irrelevant, or solely promotional content is considered SPAM.



  3. Community Standards: Brands and professionals should foster community by participating in discussions, responding to feedback, and sharing content that reflects the interests and values of the Mastodon community.



  4. Closed Enrollment Policy: To maintain quality and community engagement, open enrollment is closed. New members are selectively admitted based on alignment with community values and standards.


Non-compliance may lead to content removal, warnings, or account suspension. These rules aim to balance professional and brand contributions with the ethos of Mastodon and ActivityPub.
