This instance started out as a personal project of mine, mostly to see if I could do it. Now, it's considered a community for people who want a safe, stable place to be social. No BS.

I'm a geek with a ton of free time and an interest in just about all things tech. This instance is a safe and stable community that I run in my free time, and that I intend to keep around for as long as the universe lets me. If you'd like an account here, know that the rules (yes, we have them) are strictly enforced to protect the other accounts on this instance and the wider fediverse. At present, the instance has a character limit of 1000000, and a limit of 4 media attachments per post to conserve space. These will be and have been adjusted as the needs of the userbase change. All other standard Mastodon features, such as polls, are supported. If you are unclear if a feature is supported, or how to use that feature, please contact the instance administration.

About this server

This is a Norwegian mastodon instance and safe haven for social exchange between tech people from the University of Oslo, Norway. Despite that, this site has no affiliation nor it belongs to the University of Oslo.

It is also opened for other tech people and/or friends from around the world, but we have restrictions to posts in other languages (check our rules).

The name "babb" is because of the love for good kebabs that we share at USIT (University Center for Information Technology at the University of Oslo. On our team, we call them affectionally "babb".

It came to us that "babbe" is used pejoratively for immigrants in Sweden - which is kinda ironic, since the admin of this site has indeed and proudly, a foreign background.

Mastodon Server Covenant

We adhere 100% to the Mastodon Server Covenant. No racism, gender discrimination or anti-semitism will be tolerated.

We have daily backups, and @Gaelle has also access to the server infrastructure in case of emergency.

Transparency

This server runs on a kubernetes cluster with 6 nodes, 3 masters and 3 workers. Each machine has 14gb ram, but we might upgrade them accordingly should there be need for that.

This Mastodon server is the twin server of Todon.nl. They are both run and moderated by a small collective of volunteers. We accept all languages, although English, Dutch, German and Spanish are the most popular on this server. Moderation is in English and Dutch, but we are also fluent in machine translations.
