Important Features

• Your Profile and Settings: Take a few minutes to go over your profile, upload a photo, and fill out the fields, then edit your preference to ensure the site is set up to your liking. There are some important settings like "Enable advanced web interface" which switches the site to a multiple-column display. You can also change to a dark theme if you prefer that, among other features. If you're a previous Mastodon user, you can migrate your followers from your other account to this one, if you like.


• Multiple Mobile and Desktop Apps: Since Mastodon is open source, there are multiple mobile and desktop apps available for multiple operating systems. Unlike Big Tech which only gives you one option - their app, here you have a choice. Which is best? Depends on what you like.


• Your RSS feed: Your posts are available as a feed with which you can do various things, like add to your blog or website. Or tie them into a system like IFTTT.com (though it's centralized) and then on each new post you make, you can have IFTTT repost it to your other social media accounts that haven't been deplatformed yet, like a Twitter or Facebook. Final interpretation of the following guidelines is up to the administration of The Union Place and is at our sole discretion. They are posted here to provide you with an insight into our content moderation policies and procedures.

I. User Accounts

The Union Place is open to all union members, organizations, friends, and allies. Content posted on The Union Place need not be entirely, or even majority, union or labor-movement related.

Given the broad consensus among many marginalized and progressive communities that police unions are not a true part of the labor movement, police unions are not welcome on The Union Place. We will not specifically screen to prevent members of police unions from joining, but content pushing a pro-police and pro-police union agenda will be considered unacceptable. Police union locals and other directly-related advocacy groups are not eligible to maintain an account on The Union Place.

II. Unacceptable Content

The following types of content will be removed from the public timeline:

• Nudity that has not been:
  
  
  • Appropriately tagged, and
  • Masked behind a Content Warning.
  
  

The following types of content will be removed from the public timeline, and may be removed entirely:

• Excessive advertising, and
• Uncurated news bots posting from third-party news sources.

  • We acknowledge that there are several murky legal grey areas, and would like to remind users that Content posted on the Internet, and by extension the Instance, is never truly private.

  • Our servers are hosted in the United States; other content under that law will be addressed on a case-by-case basis at the discretion of the administration team with consideration for any municipalities that are directly involved, as well as whether it complies with the rest of the Code of Conduct and Terms of Service,
  
  
• Genocide denialism, as well as material which promotes, advocates for, or encourages genocides whether past or present, and
• Conduct promoting, advocating for, or encouraging any far-right ideology.

III. Harassment

Any conduct intended to stalk or harass other users, or to impede other users from utilizing the service, or to degrade the performance of the service, or to harass other users, or to incite other users to perform any of the aforementioned actions, is also disallowed, and subject to punishment up to and including revocation of access to the service and/or referral to the appropriate law enforcement agency, at our discretion.

Harassment includes the following behaviors:

• Offensive comments related to gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, mental illness, neuro(a)typicality, physical appearance, body size, race, or religion,
• Unwelcome comments regarding a person’s lifestyle choices and practices, including those related to food, health, parenting, drugs, and employment,
• Deliberate misgendering or use of ‘dead’ or rejected names,
• Simulated physical contact (eg, textual descriptions like “hug” or “backrub”) without consent or after a request to stop,
• Threats of violence,
• Incitement of violence towards any individual, including encouraging a person to engage in self-harm or to commit suicide,
• Deliberate intimidation,
• Stalking or following,
• Harassing photography or recording, including logging online activity for harassment purposes,
• Sustained disruption of discussion,
• Unwelcome sexual attention,
• Pattern of inappropriate social contact, such as requesting/assuming inappropriate levels of intimacy with others,
• Continued one-on-one communication after requests to cease,
• Deliberate “outing” of any aspect of a person’s identity without their consent,
• Publication of non-harassing private communication,
• Continuing to engage in conversation with a user that has specifically has requested for said engagement with that user to cease and desist may be considered harassment, regardless of platform-specific privacy tools employed,
• Aggregating, posting, and/or disseminating a person's demographic, personal, or private data without express permission (doxing or dropping dox),
• Inciting users to engage another user in continued interaction or discussion after a user has requested for said engagement with that user to cease and desist (brigading or dogpiling).

The Union Place prioritizes the safety of marginalized people over the comfort of privileged people. As a result, we will not act on complaints regarding, but not limited to:

• ‘Reverse’ -isms, including ‘reverse racism,’ ‘reverse sexism,’ and ‘cisphobia’,
• Reasonable communication of boundaries, such as ‘leave me alone’, ‘go away’, or ‘I’m not discussing this with you’,
• Communicating in a ‘tone’ you don’t find congenial, and
• Criticizing racist, sexist, cis-sexist, or otherwise oppressive behavior or assumptions.

Participants asked to stop any harassing behavior are expected to comply immediately.

Reporting

If you are being harassed by a user of The Union Place, notice that someone else is being harassed, please report using the ‘Report’ feature in the application.

This Code of Conduct applies to The Union Place, but if you are being harassed by a user of The Union Place outside of the Service, we still want to know about it.

We will take all good-faith reports of harassment by The Union Place members seriously. This includes harassment outside our spaces and harassment that took place at any point in time. The administration team of The Union Place reserve the right to exclude people from The Union Place based on their past behavior, including behavior outside The Union Place spaces and behavior towards people who are not users of The Union Place.

Reports intended to silence legitimate criticism may be deleted without response.

• We're currently hosted on masto.host and are looking to raise $420/month to support 5,500 users comfortably. We will publish new goals as necessary based on our user numbers.
• We ultimately hope to crowdfund via Open Collective, which offers greater transparency over expenses and more flexibility for contributors. Our Patreon page is a temporary solution while we await approval from a fiscal host on Open Collective. Once we have migrated crowdfunding to Open Collective, all funds raised on Patreon will be transferred to that account, the Patreon page will be shut down and contributors will be informed of the move.

Moderation and reporting posts

• When you report an account or server, please indicate which server rule has been broken and include any extra context or explanation, if possible.
• We are volunteer moderators and will try to address the issue as soon as we are able.
• You will not be notified about the result, even if it has led to punitive action, which may not be visible to the outside. The response will be proportional to the nature of the offence.

Post visibility and privacy

• Please bear in mind that your posts – depending on their visibility – are public. We recommend not sharing information publicly that you do not intend to share with the whole internet.
• When you post, bear in mind that posts cannot be hidden by locking an account. Posts can be deleted either manually or set to auto-delete within various timeframes. Please familiarize yourself with the different visibility options for posting: Public, Unlisted, Followers Only, and Mentioned People Only (i.e. a direct message).
• The displaying and distribution of your post happens strictly according to the visibility rules you have set for the post. We will not modify the visibility of the post you have set.

Your data and privacy

• We can see basic account and profile information that you provide when signing up to the server, such as username, email, name (real or fake) and IP address.
• We do not share your information with any third parties.
• The server administrators can technically access users’ direct messages, but pledge not to do so. This option is also not available in the default admin UI. We strongly recommend not sending any confidential or private information via direct message on Mastodon (or equally on Twitter) because the messages are not end-to-end encrypted. WhatsApp and Signal are currently end-to-end encrypted applications.
• We do not log information about your use of this server or run any form of analytics. Our hosting provider, masto.host, keeps a log of the IP addresses of the requests made to the server, which is auto-deleted in less than 90 days.

Liability

• You are responsible for the content that you make available to the server, including its legality and appropriateness. Please abide by the above server rules when using Zirkus. In case of breach of rules, the administrators reserve the right to remove you.

Informed users

Securing anonymity on the server side is (relatively) easy. Maintaining anonymity while posting can be a challenge.

Moderation

This is not a free speech absolutist site.

In order to maintain our reach across the independently operated systems that make up the Mastodon network we must maintain high standards in our discourse.

Moderation will be swift (and presumably challenging!), please read the server rules below.

1. No doxxing of others, block evasion, dogpiling, or other forms of harrassment
2. Sexually explicit or violent media must be marked as sensitive or with a content warning. Sensitive material without relevant editorial context is prohibited.
3. No racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, xenophobia, casteism, or other identity based discrimination
4. No incitement of violence or promotion of violent ideologies
5. Don't lie, sharing information widely-known to be false and misleading is prohibited
6. Content created by others must be attributed, and use of generative AI must be disclosed
7. No promotion of illegal commerce. No direct sales solicitation of any kind.
8. No content illegal in the United States or Norway
