This search engine for Mastodon instances is based on a database that gets updated by our crawler every night (CET).

Instances are considered new for 30 days after they are discovered.

When an instance has not responded to our daily checks for more than 30 days it is no longer considered in statistics and searches and it gets checked only on the first of the month, rather than daily, until it possibly responds again, or until its last succesful check is one year old; in this latter case, from that moment it gets checked only on the first day of each year.

“Random ordering” of results varies daily.

Default search criteria reflect our fondness for a decentralized and egalitarian Fediverse and our attempt to exclude instances accepting fascist, racist, sexist, ableist, sovereignist, pro-nuclear and pedopornographic contents by marking them as noxious.

Daniel (@dcid) and Tony (@tony) have been working in tech since 2000. Daniel is a prolific builder, the Founder of OSSEC, Sucuri, CleanBrowsing, Trunc and NOC. Tony has been his partner for the past 12 years, and is the Founder of CubicTwo, Sucuri, CleanBrowsing, Trunc and NOC.

Together we have been building large networks to support millions of applications and users around the world for a long time. We stood up the noc.social instance because we hate how closed the web is becoming and love this idea of a decentralized ecosystem.

Journa.host is the home for working journalists and news outlets on Mastodon. It serves active and retired journalists, scholars in media studies, and a range of journalism-adjacent professionals committed to credible reporting and responsible public discourse.

There is no advertising, no subscription fees, and no paywalls, and your data is never shared or sold.

Journa.host History

Journa.host began as a community-centered initiative supported by initial funding from The Tow-Knight Center for Entrepreneurial Journalism at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY. From its founding, it was carefully managed by journalists seeking to build a trusted professional network for the broader news community.

Prominent founding moderators included:

In 2023, W. Jeffrey Brown and the Fourth Estate undertook oversight of Journa.host to preserve its independence and long-term sustainability.strengthening operational continuity while upholding its core values and mission.

In March 2026, stewardship transitioned to Mike Fraser, operator of thecanadian.social, following the closure of the platform’s fiscal host and during a period of heightened political and legal uncertainty in the United States that posed risks to independent journalism platforms. The transition was designed to reinforce stability and safeguard the platform’s commitment to press freedom.

Throughout these transitions, Journa.host has remained sustained by its community. Financial requirements continue to be fulfilled primarily through crowdfunding on Open Collective, a certified 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Moderation Policy

We maintain a balanced moderation policy that encourages a free press and free journalistic expression while enforcing rules against extremist, prohibited, and illegal content.

Hate speech is not tolerated. This includes racism, misogyny, transphobia, homophobia, and religious intolerance such as antisemitism. This list is illustrative but not exhaustive.

Our aim is to preserve responsible free expression while ensuring a safe and inclusive community for all users. Our moderation approach focuses on behavior that occurs on the journa.host platform.

You can report violations directly from an individual post, image, or profile, including spam, abusive or harmful content, inappropriate advertisements, self-harm content, and impersonation.

When making a report, please include at least a few posts that demonstrate the prohibited behavior. If additional context may assist in making a determination, include it in the comment as well.

We handle most reports within 72 hours.

Please note that we do not comment on moderation actions, and you will not be notified if a report you have made results in moderation or other action.

Additionally, not all punitive actions are externally visible. For first-time offenses, we may delete offending content, escalating to stricter measures for repeat violations.

Appeals and feedback channels are available for members.

Alpaka-Garden ist eine rein privat betriebene Instanz, welche sich nur an Personen richtet, welche @HyggesAlpaka kennen. Die Instanz wird derzeit rein privat finanziert.

Hosting

Die Instanz läuft einem V-Server bei der netcup GmbH in Nürnberg und ist daher aktuell noch nicht redundant ausgelegt, da die Useranzahl dies noch nicht rechtfertigt.

Um eine spätere Skalierung und Datensicherheit sicher zu stellen, werden Medien-Daten und Datenbank Backups im Google Cloud Storage abgelegt.
