This search engine for Mastodon instances is based on a database that gets updated by our crawler every night (CET).

Instances are considered new for 30 days after they are discovered.

When an instance has not responded to our daily checks for more than 30 days it is no longer considered in statistics and searches and it gets checked only on the first of the month, rather than daily, until it possibly responds again, or until its last succesful check is one year old; in this latter case, from that moment it gets checked only on the first day of each year.

“Random ordering” of results varies daily.

Default search criteria reflect our fondness for a decentralized and egalitarian Fediverse and our attempt to exclude instances accepting fascist, racist, sexist, ableist, sovereignist, pro-nuclear and pedopornographic contents by marking them as noxious.

Hello cyberspace traveler,

Welcome to my little witchy occult aesthetic corner of the web. I’ve tried to make a space where others interested in spirituality, paganism, and generally off the beaten path ideologies can collaborate and share. My intent is to be the groundskeeper of a shared public space where others can learn and grow while learning from and helping others grow too. (And I kinda like some of the occult aesthetics.) My personal background being what it is as a white male working in the tech sector, I know I have a number of blind spots and unknown unknowns when it comes to some wider societal and cultural experiences. I am trying to keep an open mind and open gates to all. That said, I’m also aware that some aspects of this area have been appropriated, stolen, or co-opted by colonizers and haters, and will do my best to keep these poisonous pests from this garden so it stays a safe and nurturing space.

Content Warnings

Content Warnings (or CW for short) are Subject Headings that people are encouraged to use to tell people if they are talking about a particularly sensitive topic. This may include violence or current events(see full guidelines below). These Subject Lines do not prevent a post from reaching anyone, it is used to tell people about sensitive topics in the post, to hide a very long post, or set up a knock-knock joke. For remote servers, a lack of appropriate content warnings may result in multiple other servers de-federating with them so they do not have to moderate another server’s content.

  1. Sensitive Images: Images should be marked Sensitive if they meet any of the following criteria

    • Selfies or eye contact (this is general mastodon best practice).
    • Strobing, flashing, or other animated gif types that may be sensitive to those with epilepsy.
    • Sexualy explicit images
    • any content that would fall under the following Content Warning category.

  2. Content Warnings should also be included for the following topics:

    • Mental Health: anxiety, depression, trauma, abuse, etc
    • Current Events: Politics, news, tragic events, etc
    • Drug Use: Cannabis, alcohol, smoking, psychedelics, etc


For cases of nudity: Breasts are not genitalia and do not need a Sensitive Image flag. However, sexualized or fetish content that only has breasts would still be a sexualized image, and require a Sensitive image flag at least. Images with genitalia should be marked as sensitive.

Reporting

Posts in violation of our Guidelines or ToS should be reported using the Report button on the post. A note as to why it was reported should be included. This applies for local and federated content. Reporting is a community responsibility as there is zero automatic filtering or curation of public data. Contribute to our community by saying something if you see something.

Privacy

There are some features you can use to attempt to limit your visibility, but these should not be considered secure by any measure. Staff will do their best to respect your privacy and data, and will not seek out information outside of what is necessary in the fulfillment of their duties of their roles.

That said, the ActivityPub protocol, and Mastodon in general, were not built or designed with privacy at the core. These are social tools intended to enable sharing to many people. What that means for you is that you can expect no level of guaranteed privacy. Not for your posts and Direct Messages, not for your account information, including registration email, IP address, and details you provide. Not from Admin and Staff of this instance or (at present) our hosting providers.

Availability

We will do our best to maintain as much uptime as possible and mitigate the chances of data loss and downtime. We will allow for at least 90 days notice of server shutdown. That said, we do not currently control our own hosting environment nor have we obtained backups of data. If you are concerned about loss of data such as your posts, follow and block lists, or account information, you may use the Profile Settings options to make periodic backups of your data. We allow profile exports and redirects at this time, and in most cases will allow 30 days for banned accounts to retrieve their data at the discretion of the staff.

Donations

Donations are currently being accepted through LiberaPay and Patreon in the form of recurring donations and single payments. Payment types supported by Stripe and PayPal are accepted. Our goal is to get enough small recurring donations to cover the month-to-month costs of the server and domain and reduce the administrator's out of pocket costs. Donations are only wanted on a pay-what-you-can-afford basis, and no preasure to contribute is intended.

About ActivityPub, Mastodon, and Hometown

Ah, the technical stuff! Being a computer person by trade, I find some of this stuff really fascinating. Magic can be found in the wires, and sometimes knowing how the Rube Goldberg mouse-trap cluster heck of the internet works is magic in and of itself. Here I’ll offer a brief overview of some of the different aspects and components that make this social space possible.

Basics of ActivityPub

ActivityPub can be thought of, at its most basic, as a new type of email protocol. It allows you and others to send and receive messages and media of various types between different servers online in much the same way as email. It’s format and intended use is as an alternative to other microblogging, social media, and writing platforms and services online. ActivityPub Servers are independently owned and operated by a wide variety of system administrators, with a wide background of values, beliefs, and experiences. Servers are often specialized into niche community interests or topics of focus, and even run different types of software such as Friendica, HubZilla, PeerTube, PixelFed, Plume, Misskey, WriteFreely, and others in addition to Mastodon.

What is Mastodon?

Mastodon is the server side application that first implemented and shaped ActivityPub, and is one of the most widely used software packages for ActivityPub services. The original server, Mastodon.Social, set many trends and norms for the community as a whole in the early days, and other servers have since taken up the torch of dictating norms and acceptable behavior for their own users and others that interact with them. The original Mastodon services included a 500 character post limit(up from Twitter’s 250), and custom emoji or emoticons that could be uploaded by admins to offer a more unique flavor to communications.

What is Hometown?

Hometown is a fork, or derivative based on the main Mastodon server code. It was developed by Darius Kazemi and others to add features and address issues that have not been added to the main Mastodon services. Some of these features are listed below. Hometown Features

Local Only Posting

This feature allows you to make a post that stays on the local server and does not federate to the larger fediverse. This may be useful if you’re interested only in the opinions of your peers on your server or have a specific interest and don’t want comments or reactions from the peanut gallery.
You can use this on our server by adding the :local_only: emote to a post, or selecting the chain link icon on the interface to make your post local only.

More privacy features

A number of privacy features and options have been added to further limit access to an account if you choose.

Better content types and more ways to interact

Whereas core Mastodon treats certain types of content metadata as a defacto standard of sharing, Hometown is trying to make more post types specified in the ActivityPub standards guide accessible natively. What this means for you is a better reading experience when coming across different types of posts, and better sharing experiences for your friends and followers. Many of these improvements are still in the discussion and development stages at this time.

Getting Started

So, you’re joining your first fediverse server and want to know where to start. Great! Here are a few great tips!

  1. Write and Introduction post!

      2. Talking about yourself can be hard, but a post that talks about your interests and what you hope to find on the fediverse and using the #introductions hashtag helps people with similar interests find each other, so use plenty of hashtags in your introduction! You can always re-write it later too.

  2. Hashtags!

      3. Hashtags are a powerful tool in the fediverse, allowing you to find other posts that use a particular tag, and it helps others find what you’reposting about too! You’ll only see posts that your server has seen though, meaning someone on your server has to have been following or seen the a post with said hashtag for it to show up.

  3. Fill out your profile!

      4. Having a profile picture that represents ‘you’ can be a factor in if people want to interact with you or assume yours is an inactive account. Filling in your profile description and info fields is important too. (The info fields are free form, so go wild. Many use it to include their pronouns, languages they know, or other interesting or silly info) Many people make a login but don’t fill out their profile and wonder why no one wants to interact with them, but it’s very hard to interact with someone if all you know is their username!

  4. Check out the Follow Friday tags or A.Gup.Pe discussion groups.

      5. The #FollowFriday or #ff tags are used by people on the fediverse to personally recommend cool accounts to follow. Since there are no algorithms determining what content you see, its important to occasionally tell others about all the cool stuff you’re finding! Additionally, the a.gup.pe bot service works similarly to hashtags, but instead it broadcasts the messages sent to the group to anyone else following that same group. Check out @KitchenWitch@a.gup.pe to see what I mean.

⚖️ This is a moderated instance, in that we don't accept racism, transphobia, or general dickishness, and actively filter out other servers which do. Check out the rules for more info and let us know if something is amiss with the report feature.

SLA & our promise to you

We will do everything we can to keep the server up and running, but stuff happens and we may need to take the server offline for updates, maintenance or other housekeeping. We'll try to keep outages to a minimum and announce them ahead of time.

Note that this is a public server and you shouldn't use it to share private information. If you need to send truly private messages, we suggest using an encrypted messenger like Signal.

Our server rules are pretty straightforward, but this expanded version goes into detail:

  1. You must be 18 years or older to use this site.
  2. No adult content: including pornography, sexually explicit content, gore, or extremely graphic violence, including artistic depictions.
  3. Don't punch down: No content that reinforce or advocate social structures of domination related to gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, age, religion (or lack thereof)
  4. No content harmful to the public good, such as incitement of violence or promotion of violent ideologies, antivax or climate denial.
  5. No harassment, dogpiling or doxxing of other users

Guidelines

  • Language: There are no language rules on this server. English is de facto the main language, but feel free (even encouraged!) to post in other languages.
  • Content warnings: We do not require a content warning (CW) for posts about politics, social justice, etc. However, we ask that you be kind and considerate: include CWs if you believe your post may be distressing.
  • Bots: Bots are allowed. Try to make them fun.
  • Cross-posting: Cross-posting from Twitter, RSS, etc. is fine (and even encouraged if it helps you become more active here).
  • Topics: You do not need to remain permanently "on topic". The point of this arts/humanities community is to gather like-minded people who will make posts that are interesting to each other. But that doesn't mean that everything has to be about books, art, etc. This is a community to connect people, not enforce specific topics of discussion.
  • Self-promotion: There are many writers and artists on this server, and we are more than happy for you to promote your work from your personal account. We request, however, that you do so in a tasteful and not spammy manner.
  • Industry promotion: If you are a commercial entity of interest to our community (literary magazine, publishing house, etc.), we are also happy for you to promote here in a tasteful manner. However, we request that you make a modest donation, as this is a volunteer-run server that relies on crowdfunding (see below). Please contact the admins if you have any questions.

  • You can donate to Zirkus on Patreon here.
  • We are run entirely by volunteers on a non-profit basis and are dependent on donations to cover our hosting costs.
  • We're currently hosted on masto.host and are looking to raise $420/month to support 5,500 users comfortably. We will publish new goals as necessary based on our user numbers.
  • We ultimately hope to crowdfund via Open Collective, which offers greater transparency over expenses and more flexibility for contributors. Our Patreon page is a temporary solution while we await approval from a fiscal host on Open Collective. Once we have migrated crowdfunding to Open Collective, all funds raised on Patreon will be transferred to that account, the Patreon page will be shut down and contributors will be informed of the move.
  • Every little helps a lot. We’d like to thank our community for all their support so far!

Moderation and reporting posts

  • When you report an account or server, please indicate which server rule has been broken and include any extra context or explanation, if possible.
  • We are volunteer moderators and will try to address the issue as soon as we are able.
  • You will not be notified about the result, even if it has led to punitive action, which may not be visible to the outside. The response will be proportional to the nature of the offence.

Post visibility and privacy

  • Please bear in mind that your posts – depending on their visibility – are public. We recommend not sharing information publicly that you do not intend to share with the whole internet.
  • When you post, bear in mind that posts cannot be hidden by locking an account. Posts can be deleted either manually or set to auto-delete within various timeframes. Please familiarize yourself with the different visibility options for posting: Public, Unlisted, Followers Only, and Mentioned People Only (i.e. a direct message).
  • The displaying and distribution of your post happens strictly according to the visibility rules you have set for the post. We will not modify the visibility of the post you have set.

Your data and privacy

  • We can see basic account and profile information that you provide when signing up to the server, such as username, email, name (real or fake) and IP address.
  • We do not share your information with any third parties.
  • The server administrators can technically access users’ direct messages, but pledge not to do so. This option is also not available in the default admin UI. We strongly recommend not sending any confidential or private information via direct message on Mastodon (or equally on Twitter) because the messages are not end-to-end encrypted. WhatsApp and Signal are currently end-to-end encrypted applications.
  • We do not log information about your use of this server or run any form of analytics. Our hosting provider, masto.host, keeps a log of the IP addresses of the requests made to the server, which is auto-deleted in less than 90 days.

Liability

  • You are responsible for the content that you make available to the server, including its legality and appropriateness. Please abide by the above server rules when using Zirkus. In case of breach of rules, the administrators reserve the right to remove you.
  • In no event will Zirkus, the administrators and the moderators be liable to you or any third party for any special, indirect, incidental, exemplary or consequential damages of any kind arising out of or in connection with the server and content included on or otherwise made available to you through the server.

This is a small instance for me and a bunch of peers. I'm going to treat this like my personal mail server which i am running for a couple of years now and intend to do so for as long as i am using mail. Nonetheless i can not guarantee uptime or data consistency. If you still want to join, you'll need an invite from a user of this instance.

Toot.Garden is an server that is meant for art, gaming, and musings about the world, with the occasional meme and lighthearted joke. Running for 1.5+ years, this server is dedicated to providing you a place to be social without being the product. Whoever you are, you should feel at home here. This should be your place to grow, connect, and share! That's the goal anyway!

The beauty of Mastodon is it allows for server owners, and their communities to moderate and curate content as they wish. This server is not a place for racism, antisemitism, homophobia, transphobia, or alt-right thinking/discourse. Should activities, posting, or otherwise be infringing upon this, a swift ban will be placed upon the infringing account.

In an effort to be fully transparent about the server, I've listed some general stats/info on it below.

  • Host - Hetzner, Dedicated Server Line
  • Raid - Raid 1 - NVMe SSDs
  • RAM - 64GB DDR4
  • Bandwidth - 1 Gbps up & down, unmetered
  • Cloudflare - DNS - No proxy
  • Backblaze B2 - Media storage/CDN

Network

  • Hetzner - Mastodon frontend + backend, and mail server.
  • Site-to-Site VPN Host - Redacted for security, 1gb/s up/down, connects the network together.
  • Protectli Firewall Box - Handles secure network access, and real-time security alerting.
  • Gen 9 HP Proliant - Raid 6 SSDs, Hyper-V containers, handles backups, alerting, network monitoring, and internal management tools.
  • Gen 8 HP Proliant - Raid 6 SSDs, Bare-Metal, handles grafana logging, stats aggregation. Also used as a development server to test Mastodon upgrades.

Instance Language

This instance is primarily English speaking, and the default locale is EN.

Instance Translation Service

As of Nov 1st, 2023, we now support post translation to your default language. If you believe we are missing a lanuage, please contact the instance admin to see if he can find a language pack.

If you are a smaller instance (under 1000 active users), who would like to utilize our translation API, send me an email at alienknight@toot.garden, I'd be more than happy to send you an API key.

Instance Status

Toot.Garden uses Grafana to monitor network status, a public dashboard is coming soon.

Service cost

The current monthly cost to run toot.garden optimally, and securely, comes out to ~70$ USD a month.

Donations/Tips

Currently, and for the foreseeable future, toot.garden is run by AJ Nicoloff, and all server hosting and backup costs are paid for out of pocket- there is no company sponsor. Any donations to the Ko-fi will help keep things going!

Scraping

Please note that scraping tools that do not make use of the mastodon API, will be blocked. If you use a tool such as Fedifetcher you are fine, but directly scraping web content will result in your IP being ratelimited, or blocked entirely.

Fedifetcher

As of Nov 10th, 2023, every hour the instance runs Fedifetcher with settings that pull in missed replies, boosts, and favorites to posts engaged with by members of toot.garden. This does not scrape data, rather it utilizes the mastodon API to re-check for data on the posts home instance.
