About This Search Engine

This search engine for Mastodon instances is based on a database that gets updated by our crawler every night (CET).

Instances are considered new for 30 days after they are discovered.

When an instance has not responded to our daily checks for more than 30 days it is no longer considered in statistics and searches and it gets checked only on the first of the month, rather than daily, until it possibly responds again, or until its last succesful check is one year old; in this latter case, from that moment it gets checked only on the first day of each year.

“Random ordering” of results varies daily.

Default search criteria reflect our fondness for a decentralized and egalitarian Fediverse and our attempt to exclude instances accepting fascist, racist, sexist, ableist, sovereignist, pro-nuclear and pedopornographic contents by marking them as noxious.

If your instance is behind a web firewall such as Anubis or Cloudflare, and you want it to be listed here, you must configure the firewall to allow our bot, which makes no more than a dozen HTTP requests per day, to connect to your instance, by whitelisting it by User-Agent and/or IP address. Our bot’s User-Agent is mastodon.help; the IP address from which it makes requests is the same as this site’s, 65.108.133.80.

There is not a megacorporate overlord on this server. We'd rather not spend our time dealing with moderation issues, so if someone is bothering you, please use the block feature. If you are bothering people and you become a problem, you will be removed and blocked. Play nice, thank you.

Important Features

  • Your Profile and Settings: Take a few minutes to go over your profile, upload a photo, and fill out the fields, then edit your preference to ensure the site is set up to your liking. There are some important settings like "Enable advanced web interface" which switches the site to a multiple-column display. You can also change to a dark theme if you prefer that, among other features. If you're a previous Mastodon user, you can migrate your followers from your other account to this one, if you like.

  • Multiple Mobile and Desktop Apps: Since Mastodon is open source, there are multiple mobile and desktop apps available for multiple operating systems. Unlike Big Tech which only gives you one option - their app, here you have a choice. Which is best? Depends on what you like.

  • Your RSS feed: Your posts are available as a feed with which you can do various things, like add to your blog or website. Or tie them into a system like IFTTT.com (though it's centralized) and then on each new post you make, you can have IFTTT repost it to your other social media accounts that haven't been deplatformed yet, like a Twitter or Facebook. To find your RSS feed, visit: https://social.freetalklive.com/users/YourUsername.rss Except put your username in where "YourUsername" is, and don't include the @ symbol.

  • Although not strictly required, it is recommended to use your CMDR name here.
  • The topic of this instance is, of course, Elite: Dangerous and space exploration. It won't be strongly enforced, but you should make your toots private or unlisted if entirely off-topic.
  • Porn and nudity have no reason to be forbidden (stay on topic though), but only if properly marked as "sensitive". We don't want commanders to be afraid of tooting when they have passengers!
  • No harassment or abusive unwanted communications (including spam and advertising).
  • No hate speech or gratuitous aggression. Be nice; it's just common sense. (You can be an pirate, but not a racist pirate. Simple enough, right?)

Moderators get the right to warn you as many times as needed, mute your account (won't be displayed to anyone not following you), entirely suspend your account, and blow up your brand new ship if you don't follow these rules.

Oliphaunt is a (currently) small server administered by geeks who are interested in learning about all sorts of topics. We aim to be a safe and welcoming place for all comers and especially those looking for engaged admins willing to moderate away the rougher parts of the fediverse.

The Cable is not your average newspaper. In 2014, the UK’s journalism industry was at rock bottom. 2012’s Leveson Inquiry report revealed systemic, decades-long criminality by the tabloid press in order to get ever-more sensational ‘scoops’ to sell papers.

Trust in the corporate-owned press was at an all time low, at a time when papers really needed it – their business model was in freefall, as internet firms were scooping up the ad revenue. Local investigative journalism was the first to take the hit, and had been extinct for some time.

A small group of volunteers in Bristol decided to do something about the failures of corporate-owned local media – they organised, crowdfunded, and built a reader owned new-media outlet: The Bristol Cable.

As a result, Bristol now has its own investigative newspaper, 100% owned by thousands of local people, free to access for all in digital and print.

For more than a decade, our membership model has allowed us to focus on long-term, groundbreaking investigations rather than breaking news that relies on clicks for revenue. Together, we hold power to account through groundbreaking investigations, campaign for change, and amplify marginalised voices.

We are rooted in local communities, but we’re also a leader in the global movement to reinvent the media industry as a sustainable, democratic public service. That's why we're now on the Open Social Web, helping connect our community with trustworthy journalism in a dedicated social space.

Report Handling

Below are rough definitions as to how moderaters will handle reports and what actions will be taken when a user report is submitted. Of course every report will be investigated thoroughly and punishments may be more or less severe based on moderator findings.

User level:

User Silence:Minor infractions, heated arguments, frivolous accusations, and centrist rhetoric will result in the user being silenced. Users may still follow and converse with users that are silenced but their toots will not be federated. User Suspension:Major infractions, multiple and consistent infractions, abuse, hate speech, illegal content, and right wing politics will result in a full suspension. Users will be unable to interact with suspended accounts and, if the account is based on the instance, the user will not be able to log in or post.

Instance level:

Reject Media:Applied to any server that allows illegal content and illicit porn. Can be applied to a server regardless of federated, silenced, or suspended status. Domain Silence:Reserved for instances whose politics are in violation of guideline 3. Currently consists mostly of Libertarian instances and gnu.social instances that have federated. Domain Suspension:Any domain that harbours hate speech, encourages the sharing of illegal content, or where admins have been unwilling to punish users violating guidelines 1 and 2 will be given a full suspension and will no longer be able to federate with our instance.
