We're a community of folks who are #StillMasking because we recognize that #CovidIsNotOver. The flagship Mastodon instance #ZeroesCA sent its first toot on April 27th, 2022 and has since been joined by Talk, Write, Pix, Links, Groups, and Music, with more to come. Though many of us are Canadian, we welcome like-minded people from all over the world. We're here for dissemination of science, experience, information, and ideas; to foster conversation and discussions; and to ask questions and provide answers, etm -- a safe, good faith space for covid-related topics and much more. Misinfo, disinfo, and other unlawful, harmful, and/or bad faith content is not permitted.

We run free, open-source software, much of it ActivityPub compatible and linked together via OAuth single-sign-on. We're currently running the Glitch-soc friendly fork of Mastodon with Authorized Fetch enabled and some customizations (5k character limit, 10 poll questions, Tangerine themes), Matrix (Element/Synapse), and WriteFreely. We permit bird.makeup and brid.gy/Bluesky. We suspend alt-fedi and Threads/Meta.

hardware

We lease VPS, dedicated, and cloud servers/services from OVHcloud in their Beauharnois, QC datacentre.

moderation

Our goal is to provide an environment conducive to community and communication and hostile to anything unlawful, malicious, and/or synonymous with bullying. We reserve the right to remove any accounts, content, or federated servers that are detrimental to this community and the above goal. We realize you're human and we are too, so we'll do our best to be fair yet protective. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out to admins/mods.

reporting

When reporting accounts, please include posts that show rule-breaking behaviour (when applicable) and detailed context in the comment/note, so as to help us fully understand the situation and take appropriate action. This is especially important when the content is in a language in which moderators are not fluent. We endeavour to handle all reports within 24 hours. Bear in mind that you are not notified of punitive actions pursuant to any reports you make and not all punitive actions are externally visible.

1. Hate speech and discrimination, such as, but not limited to, racism, xenophobia, homophobia, transphobia and abelism and content illegal in Europe is not allowed in any form.
2. Content warnings (CWs) are often either required or highly encouraged to keep our server safe and friendly for as many people as possible. CW-ing nudity, lewdness, politics, gore and spam-like posts are all mandatory. Failure to comply will result in account limiting.
3. Bios (account biographies) should be kept "safe for work". Highly distracting, lewd or otherwise obscene avatar or header images are not allowed.
4. Malicious or misleading information (such as, but not limited to, anti-science, fake news and hate brigading) are bannable offences. This also includes the encouragement and normalising of said information. Such content can, for example, include anti-vaccine and alternative medicine.
5. Extreme political content, such as Nazism, authoritarianism, "tankieism", and extreme nationalism is a bannable offence. An exception to this are news stories and meta around these topics.
6. Incitement of violence, regardless of the situation, is generally not allowed and appropriate content warnings is required as a minimum! We also realise that there is a difference between punching up vs. down, and that violence is sometimes unavoidable, such as protests.
7. Advertising is discouraged and is allowed at the discretion of moderators. Commissions related to the arts, charitable causes (that are demonstrably not for-profit) and personal donation requests are exempt. A general rule is that if you think that it would be annoying, put it behind a CW.
8. We do not allow any bots or automated services including crossposters from other social media sites. You can have a look at sites like "botsin.space" for that kind of stuff.
9. Doxing and non-consensual breaches of privacy is not allowed and breaking this rule will most likely result in a ban.
10. Posting uncaptioned media with public visibility is not allowed and will get your account limited, usually if repeated behaviour is observed. Twootsite is supposed to be an inclusive and accessible place. Only local posts are affected by this rule, not remote posts or boosts.

Cultivating a new billionaire-proof network of networks, the FEDERATE.SOCIAL community seeks to remake new social media alternatives and return to the internet's default settings.

If you’ve watched The Great Hack on Netflix, then perhaps you’ve changed your relationship to social media in the last few years. I launched the federate.social server in the aftermath of the leveraged buyout of Twitter realizing that centralized platforms have fundamental flaws. Re-decentralization is a response to the ways in which the scale of dominant platforms serves as both as its primary feature and its fundamental flaw that cannot be debugged. Federation offers an alternative model to rebuild social media into a network of networks that more closely resembles the original designs of the pre-commercialized internet.

The nature of a network of networks not only inhibits unmanageable scale, but also incentivizes servers to enforce conduct that sustains its position in the federation. People have to choose servers that align with their own values. In that way, federate.social begins by espousing the values of the founder. But we hope that a new membership forms and collaboratively develops the conduct and culture of the community we want to see cultivated.

We ask you to:

1. Slow down. We've been conditioned to demand immediate and constant stimulation and gratification. Building a new world will take time, work, and patience, but it will be more rewarding. Think of this more like planting a garden than simply replacing what you are already conditioned to expect.
2. Experiment. We've been conditioned to accept whatever big platforms deign is in their best interest. We need a place to design other ways of imagining how to engage together online.

When signing up, please indicate both why you want to join disabled.social and more importantly, how you plan to use the instance.

We have many organizations, charities, non-profits, adaptive tech developers, attorneys, medical providers with businesses, etc. interested in joining the instance, and we want to understand how you plan on using our space which is intended as a support space for disabled people.

We do not allow marketing to disabled people or mining them for your own commercial gains under any circumstances.

Recruiting for research projects may be allowed, but they must be submitted to our team for approval before posting.

Failure to answer how you plan to use the instance will result in rejection of your application.

Rules

"Be excellent to each other" is easier said than done, and means different things to different people.

The following rules are a (non-exhaustive) list of behaviors that may lead to deletion of toots, silencing or suspension of accounts, at the discretion of the instance moderators, as described in our Terms.

• We do not tolerate threatening behavior, stalking, or doxxing.
• We do not tolerate harassment, including block evasion, brigading, dogpiling, or any other form of contact with a user who has stated that they do not wish to be contacted.
• We do not tolerate mobbing, including name-calling, intentional misgendering, or deadnaming.
• We do not tolerate violent nationalist propaganda, fascism, Nazi symbolism, or promoting the ideology of National Socialism.
• We do not tolerate conspiracy narratives or other reactionary myths supporting or leading to the above-mentioned (and/or similar) behavior.
• Scientific discussion is critical to our community. However, conspiracy theories related to anti-vaxx and COVID19 without any scientific basis will not be tolerated.
• If you wish to recruit for a research project, do not spam the server and do not tag random members. All research recruitment must be sent to us first, where we will evaluate if it's okay to post for our members or if it is best to do recruitment elsewhere. The safety of our members is paramount.

Actions intended to damage this instance or its performance may lead to immediate temporary or permanent account suspension.

Content that is illegal in the United States will be deleted and may lead to immediate account suspension.

General Best Practices

The list below is a collection of behaviors that we expect to see from our users. If you see a user go against these best practices in a way that bothers you, please file a report and we will talk to them. While these best practices are designed to be guidelines for a good communal instance, repeated malicious unwillingness to follow the best practices will be considered just like breaking a rule.

• In general, use the tools provided to foster a considerate and accessible atmosphere. This includes the liberal use of content warnings (especially on potentially disturbing or controversial topics), and alt-text captioning of media files.
• When possible, provide credit for creative works in your posts that are not your own.
• Uninvited comments about another user's personal choices, lifestyle or family are strongly discouraged and may be considered harassment. Inappropriate sexual attention, comments about appearance and implication of physical contact will not be tolerated toward any non-consenting user.
• If you post sexual content or gore, use content warnings.
• If you post advertisements, use a content warning. Advertisements should not be excessive or automated.
• Bots may only interact with a user when they're invited by that user to do so.
• Automated posts and high-frequency posts should be unlisted (rendering visible to everybody, but not appearing on the local timeline) to keep the local timeline of our instance a place of community dialogue and human interaction. This extends to bots, feed posters, Twitter "retweets" and Twitter crossposts with broken mentions ("…@twitter.com"). Crossposter accounts that stop being active participants in our community may be removed at the discretion of the moderators.
• In discussions, please remain civil, do not insult the people you're talking to. When using sarcasm, please indicate with /s.
• Please be mindful of your language, and avoid the use of ableist and saneist language. We recognize that sometimes it can be hard to find another word to clearly communicate what you are trying to say. We have created a resource to help you find alternative language while still being able to convey your point.
• Please use captions in uploaded videos.
• There are times when users just want to vent about their situation. Unless requested explicitly, please do not drop unsolicited advice. In some cases, it might be ok to ask OP directly if they want advice.
• Spam should only be reported to us if it originates on the server or if you come across a server that is full of spammy accounts. Individual spam accounts should be reported to the originating server, not disabled.social.

Best Practices to Assist Screen Readers

Some of our users make use of screen readers. There are a few things that make for a smoother experience:

• Reminder to alt-text your images. If you are low on spoons, please use #AltTextHelp and someone from the community should be able to help and provide it.
• Avoid using multiple emojis in a row. Ex: putting 3 smiley faces in a row, or 60 red flags.
• If you want to use hashtags throughout a toot, please do so sparingly. Best to put the majority of them at the end of the toot.
• Use CamelCase for the hashtags. Ex: #DisabledSocial

Mutual Aid

The posting and sharing of mutual aid and fundraisers are welcome here on disabled.social because they are critical for the survival of some of our members. Disability payments are often woefully inadequate to meet the much higher cost of living as a chronically ill and/or disabled person. These types of things are sometimes the only way that someone can afford rent, can afford to move out of a terrible housing situation, to be able to afford a mobility aid, etc. Please do not report these posts as spam. If they bother you, you can filter them out of your feed. And regarding the hashtags used: that is up to the discretion of the member who is posting. They know which hashtags are best for their specific situation.

When doing a mutual aid request, please do not specifically @ a specific user or derail a non-related thread. This is exploitative behavior that is breaking personal boundaries. Please keep it as a general ask (which you are allowed to repost) AND/OR share it on mutual aid specific threads.

15. I agree to not use LLMs or GenerativeAI or SMLs like Grok, ChatGPT, and others to generate text, pictures, videos, or any content to copy/paste into posts. Using AI tools for accessibility such as transcribing or translation is the exception.
