About rodent.life

rodent.life (informally abbreviated RoLi) is a furry Fediverse community running on Mastodon. As a furry community there is an appreciation for art and artists and we do what we can to support them and provide a space to openly create and network. There may be posts in our timelines from LGBTQIA+ focused instances and from tech industry focused instances where some of our interests overlap. But this is primarily a space for furries.

In order to maintain an inclusive and welcoming space, we do have to set some ground rules. As such, this is not a “free speech” instance, where anything goes. We choose to federate as openly as possible within the restrictions of the rules and moderation expectations set below.

Hashtags

Like other social media platforms, Mastodon makes use of hashtags. Feel free to tag in English, Japanese, or both. (ex. #rabbit #兎 #うさぎ ) This instance can search either. Please do use tags though, especially with images. They are used to help people that want to find your content and to use in filters for people that do not want to see it.

Content Warnings

Unlike other social media platforms, Mastodon makes use of a feature called a Content Warning (CW). This feature effectively acts as a “spoiler” for the content of your post. The only text presented is the set of tags that the poster chooses to describe the content with. This allows you to give your audience the chance to consent to the content that you are choosing to reveal to them. Some of the rules require the use of Content Warnings, so please familiarize yourself with them. (This instance also has a pretty high character limit, and using a CW with the subject of a longer post should be done to keep the timelines clean.)

To other instance admins and whoever is curious about the moderation

Users here may post media that is not acceptable on other instances (typically artwork, as explicit photography is not allowed). If a post from originating from rodent.life contains explicit media, it is required to have a CW and be adequately censored. I encourage the use of tags regardless. If you admin/moderate an instance that resides in a location where such imagery is not legal, or have users that may be sensitive to such content, I recommend at a minimum rejecting media from rodent.life .

If another instance sends uncensored explicit media, this instance will reject media from it, regardless of whether or not there is a CW. If users from another instance are filling the Federated timelime with hate speech of any kind, and the Rules of that server disallow it, this instance will suspend the user (and likely attempt to reach out to the admin of the remote instance). If that happens and the Rules of another server allow such behaviour, this instance will simply suspend that instance outright.

If users in another instance are in some way in violation of the other Rules of this server (AI art posted, bot accounts, non-furry accounts, etc.) such users will likely be limited at admin discretion. If this happens a lot, or an instance seems to exist entirely for a purpose that breaks a Rule here (caters almost exclusively to bots, exists to promote a corporate account/brand), that instance will likely be suspended at admin discretion.

If the admin/moderation team of another instance publicly attempts to cause reputational harm (FediBlock posts, blocklist public messages, etc.) to rodent.life or its administration, it will be grounds for suspension of the remote instance.

Funding

At this time, this instance is funded by an individual. It does not cost enough to justify asking for more. I would encourage spending that money within the community, possibly helping out a lesser-known artist that needs it more than I do.

Custom Emoji

Nearly all of these icons have a requirement that they are used respectfully, and not to disparage the associated product. Please be respectful when using these custom emoji, and feel free to read the specific guidelines if there are any questions. Please report any violations on rodent.life to admin@rabbitpa.ws or open a report for the user/post on rodent.life .

Inkbunny - Emoji Code :inkbunny: - rodent.life received approval to use the logo for a custom emoji from the staff at inkbunny.net on April 27th 2023, provided we get permission from the artist, Shiuk, as well. Shiuk gave permission for rodent.life to use the art for an emoji on April 28th 2023.

Instance rules
  1. All users must be 18 years of age or older.
  2. No accounts may be made for bots or corporate entities. (External accounts for bots or corporate entities followed by users on this instance will be Limited.)
  3. All avatar and header images must be SFW. (They must follow the rest of the Acceptable Content Policies, and cannot be put behind a Content Warning or marked as sensitive.)
  4. All content and conduct must comply with the laws of Japan, where this instance is hosted.
  5. No hate speech of any kind, period. This is not a place for any defamatory, threatening, or harmful messages. By the same logic, any violent calls to action or language that seems to encourage harm is not welcome. (See https://joinmastodon.org/covenant )
  6. Use Content Warnings (CW) for anything others may find troubling. CWs are required for heated political or socio-economic topics, angry rants, or depressing topics. CWs are recommended for excessively long posts to keep the timelines clean. It is also recommended to use hashtags.
  7. Respect Copyright protections. Any media subject to Copyright must be posted by the Copyright owner (typically the artist) or with license from the Copyright owner (permission from the artist provided, typically the commissioner or someone whose character is in the art). Also, please credit artists.
  8. Explicit material (ex. porn or gore) must be suitably censored (in compliance with the law where this instance is hosted). Explanations of what constitutes adequate censorship are easy to find on the internet. (Here is one from Pixiv: https://www.pixiv.net/terms/?page=guideline )
  9. All NSFW content posted from rodent.life must use Content Warnings. NSFW media must use "Mark as Sensitive" where applicable (which should happen automatically when you have a content warning applied).
  10. No NSFW photos are permitted. This includes sexually explicit imagery and photos of graphic harm. Any human in a photo must be 18 years of age or older.
  11. No realistic CGI renders involving minors in sexual situations. By the same logic, no hyper-realistic, drawn images of minors in sexual situations.
  12. No fully AI-generated art. (This may change in the future if there is a way to verify that the AI was not trained with stolen art, but that seems unlikely at this time.)
  13. This instance predominantly exists for furries. If an account’s content never has to do with furries or furry art, that account may be Limited or Suspended at administration’s discretion.
  14. This is a private server. As such, the rules are open to interpretation by the administration. Furthermore, content may be removed at the administration’s discretion in an effort to maintain a safe and welcoming environment.

I run this cute little Fedi instance, rodent.life (RoLi for short). I have been involved in furry since the mid 2000's and commission art from awesomely talented people that deserve more attention than me.
