Summary of Mementomori.social

Mementomori.social is a general purpose Mastodon instance established in November 2022, hosted by a Finnish full stack web developer and Chief Technology Officer Roni "Rolle" Laukkarinen with over two decades of server and web experience. The instance is financially backed and sponsored by a Finnish web agency Digitoimisto Dude Oy.

Despite the name, the nature of this server is NOT temporary, on the contrary, it is thoroughly optimized both financial- and administration-wise and is constantly worked on to be as future-proof as possible.

We are a very liberal instance.

Mementomori.social supports the development of Mastodon and the Fediverse and is pro-Threads and pro-Bluesky federation and ActivityPub integration. We also accept companies and support marketing. You should know that, if you have anti-capitalist or anti-commercial objectives with social media.

This instance allows:

We welcome users all over the world, but the majority of users are Finnish as the server is based in Helsinki, Finland.

Software

We use a modified fork of the nightly version of Mastodon (main branch on GitHub). We follow mastodon.social which is the instance of the founder of Mastodon, Eugen Rochko, to guarantee the stableness of the server. No untested and unintended commits are used in production environment.

The server software is always patched to the most secure version and no unsafe modifications are used.

This Code contains the rules and principles for participating in the Mementomori.social community. The Code is intended to protect all members of our community from harassment and to ensure that our community is as welcoming and inclusive as possible. This is a working document and partly based on Mastodon.world's CoC (thank you guys).

Goals

• Support open and free social web movement, open source and the development of Mastodon, Fediverse and the ActivityPub protocol.
• Provide a friendly, safe, and welcoming environment for everyone regardless of gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, disability, personal appearance, body size, race, ethnicity, age, religion, nationality, political affiliation, or other similar characteristic.
• Create a supportive community, where people freely share their passions and are excited and positive about each other’s successes.
• Protect our community from harassment, malicious or illegal content and from individual members whose goals are to disrupt our community and promote their own self-interest at the expense of the community.

Principles that guide us

• We are not a free speech zone. This code of conduct lays out expected standards of conduct and behavior. You cannot say or post anything that violates these rules or principles and remain a member of our community. You must follow this CoC. If you are looking for something else, please do. It is not here.
• Bullies, trolls and disruptors are not welcome here. We will moderate accordingly.
• This is a voluntary community. You chose to be here. When you choose to join, you have implied that you agree with this Code of Conduct and will follow it.

Rules for posting

The rules you need to follow if you want to be a member of our community are stated below.

General guidance on posting and participating in Mementomori.social

• Try not to post about inflammatory, controversial subjects without a Content Warning. Ideally, you would not post about inflammatory subjects at all. However, it may be acceptable to do so in some cases, but please, do consider using an appropriate Content Warning.
• Do not post any type of nudity without a Content Warning.
• Do not engage in name calling, ad hominem attacks, or any other uncivil behaviour. Criticize ideas, never people.
• Do not report every post that upsets you. Please report posts that violate our rules but for others that you may find distasteful, or just don’t like, use the tools available to you. You can block the user or mute the conversation.

Moderation Principles

Reported content will be assessed on a balance of probabilities by the moderators. In other words, whether it is more likely than not that the content violates one or more of these rules. Moderators will suspend an account from mementomori.social when the user demonstrates that they have breached any rule several times, or if their content (including profile description) suggests that they are likely to continue to break the rules. The number of breaches leading to suspension is deliberately not defined. In egregious cases, one breach can result in suspension of the user account.

The moderation team takes a pragmatic approach to every report they receive - if they feel that a problematic post isn’t explicitly a breach of any of these rules but is inappropriate for Mementomori.social, the post will likely be removed. Users who repeatedly post problematic content or otherwise are seen by the moderators as a negative, disruptive presence in our community can be removed at the discretion of the moderation team, even if those posts or the user did not explicitly violate our rules.

Longevity

The admin of this server has been committed to keep it running ad infinitum and can control it as long as he lives and breathes, his lifetime expectancy says up until 2067. After that it's up to people who decide whether to respect the notion on his will that says mementomori.social should be kept running.

Memento mori is an artistic or symbolic trope acting as a reminder of the inevitability of death, but it also refers to a various topics like a certain type of stoic philosophy of peace and acceptance, visual art, literature, architecture, music, culture, history and equality.

The server name origins from a stoic latin phrase "Memento mori" and is originally sparked from the thought "what happens to the instance if something happens to the owner(s)". The admin of this server is a stoic-ish person who believes we never really "die", nothing is permanent and at the same time everything is. We carry on. If not in person, then in someones mind, until the universe (and the Fediverse) is here no more. “Why should I fear death? If I am, then death is not. If Death is, then I am not. Why should I fear that which can only exist when I do not?" ~ Epicurus

Mementomori.social contains plenty of modifications like Mastodon Bird UI, bigger link previews, show counts in comments and so forth. By being here you accept things are prone to changes.

What's the catch?

There is no catch. Mastodon should be free and available for everyone. The instance was born in Fall 2022 after Elon Musk purchased Twitter, but even before that Rolle had followed the development of Mastodon with a keen eye. Welcome! This instance won't probably be the most biggest in the Fediverse, but there's always room for one more user.

1. Be kind. Be human to one another.
2. No discrimination, including (but not limited to) racism, sexism, homophobia or transphobia.
3. No content illegal in the following countries: Finland, United Kingdom, Germany
4. No harassment of other users on this or other servers.
5. No explicit (NSFW) content without content warnings and/or sensitive media markers. Explicit content must not be used in user avatars or header images.

11. Accept using Mastodon Bird UI as your main theme. The theme is inspired by Twitter and is not the default Mastodon interface. It is exprerimental and in ongoing development.
12. Accept modifications to the Mastodon core. The most notable features are: 10000 character limit, bigger link previews, opt-out extensive open text search. See all of them at help.mementomori.social.
13. Accept the mortal nature of things, that anything can change in any moment and all rights to changes are reserved by the owner of this server (@rolle@mementomori.social). Accept that even though servers are the lifeline of the owner there could still be downtime (see status.mementomori.social).
14. Accept that we are using the nightly version of Mastodon. We are using the bleeding edge version of Mastodon and it may sometimes contain bugs. Accept that the owner of the server is not responsible of these bugs, they can be reported to github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues.
