There is no advertising, no subscription fees, and no paywalls, and your data is never shared or sold.

Moderation Policy

Newsie.social was launched in October 2022 by W. Jeffrey Brown, Founder and Executive Director of the Fourth Estate.

The platform was created following the acquisition of Twitter (now X) by Elon Musk in 2022, which generated great concerns regarding changes in the platform’s direction. During this period, a very large number of journalists, media professionals, and public-interest communities began exploring decentralized alternatives, prompting a broader migration campaign to the federated Mastodon network. Newsie.social was established to provide a stable, journalism-focused community within that ecosystem for those users.

In March 2026, stewardship of Newsie.social transitioned to Mike Fraser, operator of thecanadian.social, following the closure of the platform’s fiscal host and during a period of heightened political and legal uncertainty in the United States that posed risks to independent journalism platforms. The transition was designed to reinforce operational stability and safeguard the platform’s ongoing commitment to press freedom, community governance, and decentralized social networking principles.

Moderation Policy

We have a balanced moderation policy that encourages a free press and responsible free expression and speech while enforcing rules against extremist, prohibited, and/or illegal content.

Our aim is to maintain responsible free expression while ensuring a safe and inclusive community for all users. Our moderation approach focuses on behavior that occurs on the Newsie platform.

You can report violations directly from an individual post, image, or profile, including spam, abusive or harmful content, inappropriate ads, self-harm, and impersonation.

When making a report, please make sure to include at least a few posts that demonstrate rule-breaking behavior. If there is any additional context that might help make a decision, please include it in the comment as well.

We usually handle most reports within 72 hours.

Please note that we do not comment on moderation actions, and you will not be notified when a report you have made has led to moderation or other action.

Additionally, not all punitive actions are externally visible. For first-time offenses, we may choose to delete offending content, escalating to harsher measures for repeat offenses.

Appeals and feedback channels are available for members.

2. You may not use our service for any unlawful purpose or in furtherance of illegal activities.
3. You may not post or share sexual imagery and/or content, or child sexual abuse material (CSAM), including artistic depictions.
4. Promoting violence, issuing threats, or engaging in harassment is prohibited, particularly based on factors such as: race, religion, disability, ethnicity, disease, sex, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, financial means, immigration status, or political party affiliation.
5. You may not impersonate individuals, groups, or organizations in a manner that is intended to, or does mislead, confuse, or deceive others.
6. Spamming, including excessive commercial advertising, promotional campaigns, and SEO tactics, is not permitted.
