Long description
Welcome to Journa.host

Journa.host is the home for working journalists and news outlets on Mastodon. It caters to active & retired journalists, scholars in media studies, and a variety of journalism adjacent professionals.

In October of 2023, the Fourth Estate Public Benefit Cooperative undertook the oversight of Journa.host, ensuring the platform's sustained growth and relevance, while upholding its core values and objectives.

Hosting and management of Journa.host is handled by Honeytree Technologies.

The financial requirements for Journa.host are fulfilled through community support, primarily via crowdfunding on Open Collective, a certified 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

Administrative and supplemental support services are provided by the Fourth Estate PBC.

Journa.host is currently closed to new account registrations.

Journa.host History

Journa.Host started as a community-centric project with initial funding sourced from The Tow-Knight Center for Entrepreneurial Journalism at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY. A dedicated team of journalists meticulously managed it, aiming to benefit the broader news community.

Prominent founding moderators included:

  • Adam Davidson, the genius behind NPR’s "Planet Money" and former contributor to The New Yorker and The New York Times Magazine. Contact: adamdavidson@journa.host
  • Todd A. Price, a key reporter for the USA Today Network’s southern division. Email: tprice504@journa.host
  • Evan Urquhart, the brain behind Assigned Media and community manager for Slate. Reach out: e_urq@journa.host
  • Steven I. Weiss, a renowned investigative journalist. Contact: siw@journa.host

Our commitment to truth, dependability, and authenticity remains unwavering. Measures are in place on Journa.host to verify the credentials of journalists. Membership on the platform symbolizes one's status as a verified journalist. Professional journalists looking to join are invited to apply.

Moderation Policy

We have a balanced moderation policy that encourages a free press and free journalistic expression and speech while enforcing rules against extremist, prohibited, and/or illegal content.

Hate speech is not tolerated. This includes racism, misogyny, transphobia, homophobia and religious intolerance such as anti-semitism. This list is illustrative but not exhaustive.

Our aim is to maintain responsible free expression while ensuring a safe and inclusive community for all users. Our moderation approach focuses on behavior that occurs on the journa.host platform.

You can report violations directly from an individual post, image, or profile, including spam, abusive or harmful content, inappropriate ads, self-harm, and impersonation.

When making a report, please make sure to include at least a few posts that demonstrate prohibited behavior. If there is any additional context that might help make a decision, please include it in the comment as well.

We handle most reports within 72 hours.

Please note that we do not comment on moderation actions, and you will not be notified when a report you have made has led to moderation or other action.

Additionally, not all punitive actions are externally visible. For first-time offenses, we may choose to delete offending content, escalating to harsher measures for repeat offenses.

Appeals and feedback channels are available for members.
