Keeping the lights onThere's no advertising on
spartanburg.social. Neither is your activity tracked and sold to Big Data. But of course there's no such thing as a free lunch. Those who can afford it are encouraged to contribute at the
spartanburg.social Patreon site. Your money will support this site as well as our effort to establish other forms of local media in Spartanburg. Our purpose is to establish a place for conversations by and about Spartanburg.
What is Mastodon?Mastodon is a micro-blogging site similar to Twitter or Tumblr. The difference is that it's based on an open standard called ActivityPub that anyone can use. Mastodon is developed by a German non-profit, Mastodon gGmbH, and it is used by hundreds of instances (servers) around the globe. These sites each set up their own rules, moderate the posts of their own users, and decide which other sites they will exchange posts with.
No one person in control of Mastodon as a whole, just people or groups who run individual instances. There are no ads nor algorithms that determine what you see. Unlike Twitter, Facebook, or Tik-Tok, there is no corporate surveillance of what you do. Data stored on
spartanburg.social is kept on servers within the United States, and is only available to law enforement with a subpoena.
You can access Mastodon from any web browser or from dedicated phone apps from Mastodon and other developers.

A note about direct messaging on MastodonJust as with Twitter, any DMs you send on Mastodon are unencrypted and potentially visible to server administrators. We recommend you always use an encrypted messaging service like WhatsApp or Signal. Even then, your messages are available to anyone with access to your phone.
