Welcome to CaneAndAble.social. You might be wondering what we’re all about. Well, we are owned and run by Blind people. Yes, that’s Blind with a capital B! We are Disabled, and that’s not a bad word. We believe that you can live your life as a Blind person and take pride in yourself and your accomplishments, No, we’re not amazing because we are Blind, we’re amazing because we are all unique individuals with vastly different lived experiences, skills, talents, and points of view. Being Blind is part of who we are, and how we experience life and the world around us.

This community is for people who will celebrate your wins with you, give you a shoulder to lean on when you need it, and who genuinely care about lifting each other up, and helping one another through whatever life throws at you.

If you’re Blind and you want to share a server with supportive folks who genuinely take pride in their Blindness, and who take a positive approach to living life as a Disabled person, you’ve come to the right place! Please read our rules and then fill out your application. We can’t wait to meet you!

1. Be respectful: Do not harass, demean, insult, or otherwise intentionally cause harm to other users.
2. Do not discriminate against anyone on the basis of disability, gender, race, ethnicity, religious affiliation (or those who aren’t religious at all),, age, or appearance.
3. Do not harass anyone on local or federated servers.
4. Please use content warnings for posts that might be controversial, such as discussing politics or religion, or for NSFW content. If you’re not sure, your best bet is to use a content warning just to be safe.
5. Do not spread misinformation, disinformation, or malinformation.
6. Do not post content that would violate copyright laws.
7. Please describe all of your media posts so everyone can enjoy them. This includes writing alt text for images, and descriptions for audio and video files.
8. We place a high value on human interaction. Please do not use your account on this instance to only crosspost from other social media platforms.
9. Do you own a business, run a podcast, produce music, etc? We highly encourage self-promotion, as long as it does not include spamming other users, promoting fraudulent or illegal activity, such as crypto currency schemes, or sending unsolicited messages.
10. If you have read and understood these rules, please include the word “ability” in the “reason for joining” field of your application.
