What is Dirt Social?

What's more relaxing than gathering around a camp fire with your buddies after a day of wheeling? No pretenses, nothing to get in your way, just you and your friends talking about the hobby you love.

Now, imagine you're sitting around that camp fire, and every few minutes a man in a suit walks up, and tried to convince you to buy a taco. You like tacos, so maybe you're ok with that, but you just had a steak from the fire, and really you're just not hungry for one. So the man comes back next time with an offer on beer. Beer sounds nice, So you consider a beer. But while you're thinking about tacos, and beer, you're losing something else. What were you doing before the taco guy?

This is a lot like social media today. Sure, the algorithm helps you promote your brand, it helps you make money even. You love the algorithm if you know how to leverage it. But wouldn't it be nice to just sit and chat with your friends without worrying about your social brand? And let's not even get started on your loss or privacy.

Federation, and Moderation

Mastodon is a different sort of platform, where different groups or servers can talk to each-other. The Mastodon network is vast, and has a lot of instances from all different walks of life. You will very likely come across folks who live lifestyles that you do not agree with. But please remember that disagreeing with someone is not grounds for banning or blocking them. PLEASE report abuse and illegal activity, but do not report every person who simply disagrees with you. The Dirt Social staff takes illegal activity very seriously, if you find an instance that seems to primarily promote something that feels illegal, please let us know. For example, many instances are already blocked for things like, sex trafficking, hate speech, and other questionable activities.

Financial Support

Nate runs this place out of pocket, to give anyone and everyone a place to connect that's free of privacy violations and outrage algorithms. If you'd like to toss him a few bucks, you can do so via Ko-Fi

1. Be kind to everyone, when possible
2. No hate speech, or direct attacks, period.
3. No adult images (nudity, pornography). For both legal and social reasons, the admin does not want the responsibility of hosting this sort of content.
4. Keep Political and religious discussion civil. We are not opposed to healthy debate, but please, keep it respectful. No baiting or intentionally polarizing posts.
5. No images of violence without a content warning. We do not want to ignore the atrocities in the world, but realize that others may not want to see images of death or violence without a warning.
6. No "Fake News". This excludes things that are clearly satire.
7. "I Disagree With You" is not a moderate-able event.
8. No Spam, or other unsolicited direct marketing
9. No bots that are here solely to spread some manner or propaganda. I don't care if its political, war related, pro of against one side or another. Dirt Social is not your platform to spew divisiveness or misinformation. If your account even feels spammy or bot-like the admins will take action.
