If you're new to Mastodon and are using the official mobile app, highly consider using an alternative mobile app or the actual web site. The "Federated" feed is an excellent way to discover new users and posts and is not available in the official mobile app. Ice Cubes on iOS is a good one and open-source.

Also I'd recommend going into Preferences->Other and setting the language filter so you don't see a lot of posts in languages you don't understand.
