I (Tyler) operate this instance for myself and anybody in my circle that would like to join. If we've met in-person, we've worked together, or we've ever sent one another a message over email or text, that's plenty of reason to join. I'd love you have you here!

Aside from "you know who I am", why would you elect to create an account here rather than somewhere else?

1. I'm privacy-paranoid. You're reading from a Mastodon instance that's full-disk encrypted at rest and using solely my own self-hosted services.
2. I'm operationally paranoid. This server keeps regular disk snapshots, is fully config-managed, and capable of being scaled up at-will.
3. I won't enforce draconian rule. You and I can have different opinions 🙂

Moderation/Policy

Please adhere to the rules. There aren't many.

There isn't a rigid content policy and this server doesn't have a particular focus, although I do mostly post about technology and my interests. Please don't break the law with what you post. I'm not perfect either so I'll try and be flexible.

I will vehemently defend your information and I'd rather pull the plug on this server and leave it an unintelligble pile of encrypted bits than hand it over to a three-letter agency.

• I commit to providing at least three months notice if I ever intend to shut this server down in order to provide users sufficient time to offload accounts, data, and do so on.

Currently, I'm abusing taking advantage of public cloud free tiers! Which means that any support you provide is mostly to justify spending my time administering the instance (I'm donating my time but my normal consulting rates are pretty high 😄).

Note: don't worry too much about reading into "running on a cloud free tier" to mean that I'm going to tear it down if things ever become expensive. I don't mind paying for a VPS and can always migrate if we need to.

I have not been served with a secret government subpoena for any of my services. If this warrant canary is ever removed, users are to assume that I have indeed been served with a secret subpoena. The intention is to warn users of the existence of a subpoena passively, without disclosing to others that the government has sought or obtained access to information or records under a secret subpoena. Warrant canaries have been found to be legal by the United States Justice Department, so long as they are passive in their notifications.
