Hello, i’m the guy who, until now, took care of the technical part of mastodon.help, while its editorial part was curated by a friend who, however, since December 2022, i have been unable to contact. Since it was last updated, a little less than two years ago, our guide to Mastodon has become outdated with respect to the many new features and changes that in the meantime have been introduced in Mastodon, the most important of which – trending posts, trending hashtags, trending news and trending accounts (respectively the subsections “Posts,” “Hashtags,” “News” and “For You” of the “Explore” section) – i consider wrong and harmful, because they gamify users’ experience, just as i consider wrong and harmful the centralization of the fediverse toward Mastodon, its most populated servers and especially mastodon.social, that Mastodon development team has been pursuing and still pursues in many ways, for example by carefully avoiding the introduction, into the official web frontend and apps, of simple features such as the ability to follow the local timelines of instances other than one’s own, by presenting the most populated instances at the top of this page, with mastodon.social in the lead, and by the design of the official apps’ welcome screen, which does everything possible to push new users to sign up on mastodon.social.

For these reasons, and because these criticisms have always been ignored on Mastodon’s issues tracker, i think that updating the guide would not be worth the effort and time it would take, so i have replaced the site’s pages with this one and will let the mastodon.help domain registration expire in April 2024.

However, i thank those who did the translations and contributed in any other way, and bida.im, which hosts mastodon.help on one of its servers.

Ciao, sono il tizio che fino a oggi si è occupato della parte tecnica di mastodon.help, mentre della sua parte editoriale si occupava un amico che però, da dicembre 2022, non riesco più a contattare. Dal suo ultimo aggiornamento, risalente a poco meno di due anni fa, la nostra guida a Mastodon è diventata obsoleta rispetto alle tante novità e cambiamenti che sono stati introdotti nel frattempo in Mastodon, i più importanti dei quali – post di tendenza, hashtag di tendenza, notizie di tendenza e account di tendenza (rispettivamente le sottosezioni “Post”, “Hashtag”, “Novità” e “Per te” della sezione “Esplora”) – ritengo sbagliati e dannosi, siccome gamificano l’esperienza dellə utentə, così come reputo sbagliata e dannosa la centralizzazione del fediverso verso Mastodon, i suoi server più popolati e in particolare mastodon.social, che è stata e continua a essere perseguita dal team di sviluppo in tanti modi, per esempio evitando accuratamente di introdurre nel frontend web e nelle app ufficiali semplici funzionalità come la possibilità di seguire le timeline locali di istanze diverse dalla propria, presentando in cima a questa pagina le istanze più popolate, con mastodon.social in testa, e tramite il design della schermata di benvenuto delle app ufficiali, che fa tutto il possibile per spingere ə nuovə utentə a iscriversi su mastodon.social.

Per queste ragioni, e siccome queste critiche sono state sempre ignorate sull’issues tracker di Mastodon, credo che aggiornare la guida non varrebbe la fatica e il tempo che richiederebbe, perciò ho sostituito le pagine del sito con questa e lascerò scadere la registrazione del dominio mastodon.help ad aprile 2024.

Ringrazio comunque chi ha fatto le traduzioni e ha contribuito in qualsiasi altro modo, e bida.im, che ospita mastodon.help su uno dei suoi server.
