mas.town is a new social media alternative focused on robust and responsible public dialogue, NOT controlled by big tech (or associated algorithms). mas.town runs on the Mastodon decentralized network - taking control away from big tech providers - and placing it into individual communities. mas.town is fully federated - meaning you can connect, follow, and interact with anyone on any other server.

As an instance, we fully subscribe to the Mastodon Covenant.

Data Security | Data Privacy

Choosing an instance/server is one of the more important decisions you will make. It’s less about the topic of interest - since you can connect with anybody - and more about how safe and secure your data is, and how well moderated the server is. To that end, all information on mas.town is hosted in the USA, housed on AWS, and backed up daily for data security and privacy. Additionally - we actively moderate posts, users, and instances who violate community norms.

Grassroots Engagement

The Mastodon network is different than what most are accustomed to. Because there are no algorithms to feed you what the provider wants you to see (or what the provider thinks you want to see) - you are in control of your feed. The more you engage and interact, the more you see content germane to your interests! There’s a bit of a growing period up front to establish your network, and a learning curve for the environment, but it is well worth it in the end!

1. Posts on mas.town are moderated. We promote robust dialogue from all viewpoints, but want to cultivate a trusted instance for others to join. Therefore we will moderate threats of violence, harassment, harmful disinformation, hate speech, and similar content.
2. In order to promote a trusted instance which can be used in work and family environments, we will moderate posts which are sexually explicit, to include pornography or similar content.
3. Please respect the intellectual property of any artist, journalist, or other individual or group. If you have a claim of copyright infringement, please report the post or contact an admin.
4. Specific areas of post moderation include, but are not limited to: racially motivated hate, sexual orientation motivated hate, hate based on religious beliefs, online harassment, harmful conspiracy theories, violence, etc.
5. Where laws are broken - we reserved the right to report to, or cooperate with, law enforcement authorities.
6. We do not tolerate online harassment, doxing, or stalking in any form.
