A safe and friendly Mastodon instance, operated for Emacs, Lisp and FOSS enthusiasts, developers and all open-minded humans. 5000 character limit.

This is "emacs.ch", a mastodon instance for the #Emacs community and #GNU #FOSS enthusiasts. Everyone is welcome, even #Vim users!

We share Emacs tips and news here and you'll encounter some well-known Emacs faces here.

In addition, this instance is fully integrated in Fediverse and may be used for personal and general purposes. The general tone is inspirational and encouraging. Posting about politics and religion is discouraged, but not prohibited. In general, anything that is not explicitly forbidden is allowed (see server rules). We also have some bots that keep you up to date with the Emacs community on the web (e.g. MELPA updates and various RSS feeds). You are also welcome to run your own bots as long as they are related to the theme of the server.

The whole thing is run and paid for privately by the instance owner, an #Emacs fan like you, and user donations. He expects nothing from you, except that you feel comfortable here and make a few valuable friends.

The server is currently hosted in Helsinki, Finland and has plenty of resources. There are daily backups for seven days. There is no tracking and your data will not be shared. We run the Mastodon Glitch edition with extended features and update ever 2 weeks. Should anything change in the operation of the server, we will give you at least three months notice to find a new home in Fediverse.

1. Be friendly, be respectful, stay on-topic and avoid derailing discussions.
2. No condescending or derogatory language, especially regarding race, nationality, color, gender, sexual preference, age, religion or political affiliation. This includes calls for violence against anyone or any group of people.
3. Use the CW (Content Warning) flag whenever you post something that you wouldn't want your neighbor, boss, coworker, partner or children to see.

7. If you post links to media (videos, images, audio), please provide a short description of what the content is about. This helps the users and the moderators to better assess the content. We reserve the right to mark links to media as "sensitive" that the moderators cannot qualify.
8. Comply with the law of your country.
9. No introduction required, no real names required, but please put a few words in your bio.
10. This server is intended for non-commercial purposes, with the exception of directly related commercial activities that contribute to the server's topic (i.e. services related to FOSS, hosting, Emacs, books). Prior approval from administrators is required for recurring use.
