Welcome to the Fediverse! Or more specifically, welcome to Mastodon, a federated micro-blog. This particular instance is powered by 100% green electricity, hosted in the EU (Germany), and managed by Sweet-E-Pie Solutions (SEPS).

New to the Fediverse?

There are a few Fediverse- / Mastodon-specific terms you may wish to familiarize yourself with:

• Federation: Interoperability between platforms (i.e., the ability to interact with users / content which exists on an entirely separate platform).
• Fediverse: A collection of federated platforms (e.g., Lemmy, Loops, Mastodon, PeerTube, Pixelfed, and Pleroma).

Adjustments

SEPS Social doesn't use vanilla Mastodon. Instead, we've made some changes in attempt to give our users a more enjoyable experience.

• SEPS Social uses the Hometown fork, which adds several additional features on top of vanilla Mastodon (e.g., removing the Mastodon branding, the option to de-federate your posts, in-line article viewing, the option to exclude members of a list from your home timeline, additional themes for the web interface, and the ability for administrators to adjust toot character limits).
• By default, Mastodon only allows toots to contain a maximum of 500 characters. We have raised this value to 1,500.
• In order to make SEPS Social more accessible to the visually impaired, our instance defaults to Mastodon's high contrast theme.
• In attempt to respect our users' privacy, we opt them out of search indexing by default.

Expectations

For specifics, we recommend reading the server rules below.

Generally speaking however, we are an ethics-focused organization managing a business-oriented instance. As such, we have high expectations regarding the online conduct of our members.

Our mission is to promote ethical business practices and spread positivity throughout the Fediverse. If you find that any of our members are acting in contrary to that stated mission, please reach out using the contact info above.

Accessibility

We encourage our members to prioritize accessibility by providing alt text for all the media they share. This includes profile and banner photos.

Additionally, we recommend using PascalCase for tags (e.g., #AltText instead of #alttext). This helps assistive technologies such as screen readers to more clearly convey the message. (It's also just plain easier to read!)

Moderation

We use Sunny Garden's Garden Fence Blocklist. This keeps moderation work manageable for us, and keeps offensive content to a minimum for our users. Thank you, Garden Fence team!

Funding

This instance is currently funded by SEPS. As we grow we may be open to accepting donations, though payment will never be expected of our members.

Interested in joining our instance? You'll need to apply to become our Ethical Business Partner first. (You don't have to be a business -- we accept applications from individuals as well.) If your application is approved, we'll send you an invite. To qualify, you'll need to demonstrate your commitment to ethical business practices. Check the application page for more details.

Becoming an Ethical Business Partner grants you other benefits as well, such as massive discounts on our web / translation services and free publicity in the form of blog / micro-blog posts (via both SEPS Blog and SEPS Social).
