Welcome!inductive.space is a tiny Mastodon server for me and friendly people who like programming languages, free software, urbanism or just want to hang out. It's run by me,
Eisfunke. This is very much not a professional operation, but rather a hobby project running from my homeserver. I try my best, I do know my way around server stuff, I keep off-site backups et cetera, but still, please adjust your expectations.
Softwareinductive.space runs
glitch-soc, which is a fork of of Mastodon's development version with some additional features, such as Markdown posting and more. It can potentially be a little less stable than "normal" Mastodon, so bear with us if something breaks (hasn't happened so far). We also have a higher post length limit of 2520 characters.
This instance follow various other instances and hashtags via
relay.fedi.buzz fitting to the instance focus topics listed below. This means the federated timeline you'll see here will contain a lot of stuff from these topics.
The instance runs on NixOS and is configured via NixOS. The configuration running on my server is public and FOSS, you can take a look at it on my
GitLab.
Please read the rulesIf you want to join, please read and follow the rules below. The
Berlin Code of Conduct applies here. I'm committed to make this a friendly, cozy and inductive space for all kinds of people.
Is this the instance for me?It might be! This is a very small and not a professional server mainly geared to my own usage, and you should consider the downsides of that.
Being small also has upsides though, e.g. we can easily keep a low profile and stay out of fediverse drama. Also, our federated feed is curated (see above) to the server focus topics (see below). It's also more personal – ideally, I want this server to feel like a digital living room to have fun in. It's probably not well suited as a professional forum or something like that.
This might be a good instance for you if you're interested in any of the following:
- programming languages, types, (theoretical) computer science (as you might have guessed from the domain)
- free software
- any kind of science or tech in general
- urban planning, urbanism, bikes, criticism of car-centric design, maps, OpenStreetMap
- politics, sociology: from digital privacy over capitalism-critical economics and critical theory to feminism
- books, podcasts
- travelling, hiking
- the people already here
This is probably
not a good instance for you if you're politcally conservative, libertarian or right-wing, if you strongly dislike any of the above or if you just want to fight with people who like any of the above.
If I think your posts don't fit well into the instance's community and culture I might ask for you to look for an instance that fits you better, even if you don't explicitly break any rules.
If all that stuff hasn't put you off, and you'd like to participate, feel free to send a join request!
Fediblock PolicyI'm keeping up with the tier 0 blocklist from the
oliphant.social blocklists. That keeps out the baseline of Nazi instances and similar stuff.
Apart from that, I mostly only block (a.k. suspend or defederate) instances if they cause problems. Part of the luxury of being a small instance with few people with similar interests is that we're only really interacting with a focused slice of fedi anyway. If you need a sturdier blocklist or an instance in a more curated slice of fedi, you're probably better off on another server.
DisclaimerThis instance is still quite new, and I'm new to the business of running a Mastodon instance, so please bear with me. I'm open to feedback, constructive criticism and suggestions regarding the instance and the rules.
However, please remember that this isn't a democracy in the end, rule interpretation and final decisions will be done by me. The great thing about the fediverse is that if you disagree with my decisions, you can always look for an instance you'd be happier on.
