Why I participate in the Fediverse

• I value my social media feed being filled with content from the accounts I follow, in chronological order, without ads or mysterious algorithms influencing what I see.
• Each server owner in the Fediverse creates their own rules, enforced by moderators of their choosing, catering to the needs of the users they host.
• Each user can join various Fediverse servers by agreeing to comply with their rules, and has the freedom to move to another server and take their followers and follows with them when they leave.
• The Fediverse enables unique opportunities for people to organize based upon common niche interests and can therefore provide greater autonomy and safer spaces for marginalized people.
• Oligarchs are unable to buy the decentralized Fediverse and fascists have limited ability to influence or control our freedom of speech in this space.
• The Fediverse is based upon the ActivityPub protocol and open standard for decentralized social networking, first published and recommended by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) in January 2018.
• The majority of Fediverse platforms are based on free and open-source software including: Mastodon, WordPress, Pixelfed, PeerTube, Funkwhale, Misskey, Pleroma, Friendica, Lemmy, and Bookwyrm.
• A few corporate-controlled platforms provide varying levels of interaction with the Fediverse including: Flipboard.com, WordPress.com, Micro.blog, Ghost.org, Threads.net, and BlueSky (via brid.gy).
• By operating my own Fediverse server, I am able to use an internet domain under my control, make my own moderation choices and can limit or reject media from servers that are outdated, unmoderated, or allowed to be used repeatedly for spam or illegal content
