Running on a decentralized, privacy-focused ecosystem, it operates as a Mastodon-powered Fediverse instance that uses the ActivityPub protocol, enabling seamless interaction across hundreds of interconnected platforms. The interface is highly flexible—users can select a simple layout or switch to an advanced, multi-pane view (similar to X Pro / TweetDeck) to manage multiple timelines at once and follow verified scientists, local posts, social feeds, and the broader federated timeline.

Roles and Professional Verification

A standout feature of Science.Social is its system of verified roles that correspond to a user’s scientific expertise. These role badges appear on profiles, boosting professional credibility and making it easier to network. The platform also offers directories of users and posts filtered by these verified roles, helping the community quickly discover and engage with industry experts.

Fediverse Connectivity

Because Science.Social is part of the Fediverse, users can interact with people on platforms like Threads, Tumblr, Flipboard, Mastodon, WordPress, and others. This interconnected ecosystem encourages cross-platform collaboration and the broader dissemination of scientific knowledge.

Portability and Data Ownership

In line with its decentralized ethos, Science.Social lets users migrate their profiles, posts, and followers from other networks (including Mastodon, Tumblr, and Threads) without hassle. Users retain full control of their digital identity and can undock from Science.Social at any time—moving to another instance without losing data or community ties.

Commitments & Safeguards

• Active moderation against racism, sexism, homophobia, and transphobia. Users can join knowing that Science.Social is a safe space, free from white supremacy, antisemitism, and other forms of hate present on some platforms.
  
• Daily backups ensure that a power outage, hardware failure, or rogue bit flip will not erase user data; a robust backup strategy is a basic requirement for any public service.
  
• Redundant administration: at least one additional person has emergency access to the server infrastructure, guaranteeing that technical emergencies can be handled even if the primary administrator is unavailable.
  
• Graceful shutdown policy: if the service must ever close, users will receive at least three months’ notice so they have ample time to export their data and migrate to another instance.
