Contact UsI do plan to eventually to eventually get a team to help me with moderation but for now it's just me,
@monkeyninja@10base2.dev. You can get my attention by tagging #ModHelp or just message me directly.
Code of ConductFor those of you unfamiliar with 10Base2 technology, it's an out-of-date networking technology. Networking is about building connections and so is this server. I do however strongly ascribe to the "Paradox of Tolerance" in that if I extend tolerance towards those who are intolerant, this risks the eventual dominance of intolerance. If you're looking for a pithy way to frame it, I'd say that this server is a welcoming place so long as you are welcoming.
Unwelcome ContentI struggled with what to come up with here so a tip of the hat to the folks over at
kolektiva.social for giving me some ideas for what I wanted to put here. So as an addendum to above, here's a list of the kinds of content that will get deleted and possibly get you suspended or deleted from the server.
- Hatred or bigotry of any kind. To spell it out - racism, misogyny, homophobia, antisemitism, slurs, etc. Unless you're a member of a group who is trying to reclaim a term or you're using it as a part of a post to illustrate bigotry you've experienced as a member of that group, that has no place here.
- Posts espousing pro-fascist stances or sympathy with fascist movements or regimes
- Nudity or Pornography depicting people who did not consent to having their image shared on this server.
- Pedophilia/MAP content, in all its manifestations.
- Purposeful misinformation.
- Spam.
Content WarningsI personally am a big fan of using content warnings. I've also seen some really compelling writing from friends who have said that those can and have been used to blunt the impact of discussing topics such as Racism, Misogyny, Antisemitism, etc. At the end of the day, I'm not here to police anyone's tone and if you're angry and need an outlet for that then I certainly understand not wanting to include such a warning with your post. I would however ask that any nudity or pornography posted to be behind a content warning
Why "10base2.dev" for a server name?I'm an old geek. I thought of just leaving it at that and moving on to the next point, but there was actually some thought that went into it. For those of you who know older networking tech, 10base2 was the dominant networking technology once upon a time. If you scroll to the end I linked to a snippet of the Wikipedia article.
When I first encountered Mastodon in 2017, it dawned on me that it was a lot like the token ring networks of old. The only thing that allowed the information to move between server instances was that interconnected nature.
Plus, I still have a box in a closet somewhere with a bunch of BNC connectors in it and I wanted to pay homage to that. Here's a snippet from
Wikipedia 10BASE2 (also known as cheapernet, thin Ethernet, thinnet, and thinwire) is a variant of Ethernet that uses thin coaxial cable terminated with BNC connectors to build a local area network. During the mid to late 1980s, this was the dominant 10 Mbit/s Ethernet standard. The use of twisted pair networks competed with 10BASE2's use of a single coaxial cable. In 1988, Ethernet over twisted pair was introduced, running at the same speed of 10 Mbit/s. In 1995, the Fast Ethernet standard upgraded the speed to 100 Mbit/s, and no such speed improvement was ever made for thinnet. By 2001, prices for Fast Ethernet cards had fallen to under $50. By 2003, Wi-Fi networking equipment was widely available and affordable. Due to the immense demand for high-speed networking, the low cost of Category 5 cable, and the popularity of 802.11 wireless networks, both 10BASE2 and 10BASE5 have become increasingly obsolete, though devices still exist in some locations. As of 2011, IEEE 802.3 has deprecated this standard for new installations.
