Wandering.Shop aims to have the vibe of a quality coffee shop at a busy SF&F Convention. Think tables of writers, fans and interested passers-by sharing drinks and conversation on a variety of topics.

The Wandering Shop is a Mastodon instance initially aimed at the science fiction and fantasy community, but open to all. We want our 'local' timeline to have the feel of a coffee shop at a good science fiction convention: tables full of friendly conversation on a wide variety of topics.

User Accounts on Wandering Shop

Wandering Shop is open to new members who wish to participate in the Open Social Web from a home base of a small-ish, intentional online community. Our sign-up process is unique as far as we know among Mastodon services. Aiming for an analogy to the Fediverse's Worst-Kept-Secret Handshake, we use invitation codes that can be handed out by any established member of the community. Find someone on our timelines and reach out - we have ambassadors. If you are new to the Fediverse and looking for a first home, send a short note to our Proprietor team address (above) and introduce yourself.

The Wandering Shop Code of Conduct

We want this to be a fun, pleasant, and harassment-free experience for everyone, regardless of gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, or religion. We do not tolerate harassment of participants in any form.

Participants asked to stop any harassing behavior are expected to comply immediately. If someone asks you to leave them alone, leave them alone.

Unacceptable Behavior

The following behavior is not welcome anywhere in The Wandering Shop:

• Offensive comments related to gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, mental illness, neuro(a)typicality, physical appearance, body size, race, or religion
• Holocaust denial and Nazi symbolism
• Promotion of fascist, white supremacist, or hateful ideology or symbolism, including in the choice of a user name or avatar
• Deliberate, targeted, or persistent misgendering or deadnaming, or promotion of so-called "conversion therapy" and programs of similar intent
• Threats of violence
• Incitement of violence towards any individual, including encouraging a person to commit suicide or to engage in self-harm
• Deliberate intimidation
• Publishing any individual's address, phone number, or other private identifying information without consent
• Sexual depictions of children
• Unwelcome sexual attention, including sharing sexual content with specific users without consent
• Gratuitous sexual images, textual descriptions or behavior without a content warning
• Non-consensual distribution of intimate material, graphic or textual, including that generated or augmented by AI programs. If sexually explicit material depicts, names, or simulates an identifiable person as its subject, it shall only be present with the full consent of the subject
• Simulated physical contact (e.g. textual descriptions like “*hug*” or “*backrub*”) without consent or after a request to stop
• Publication of non-harassing private communication without consent
• Sustained disruption of discussion
• Continued communications with someone who's asked that you leave them alone
• Unwelcome comments regarding a person’s lifestyle choices and practices, including those related to food, health, parenting, drugs, and employment

The following behavior is not allowed on the public timeline:

• Graphic violent or sexual content without a content warning
• Gratuitous or excessive advertising or spam. It's fine to promote your work, but it shouldn't be the bulk of what you share
• Fully automated/unattended crossposting or backfilling from any other instance or social media site/application. Please note that bridged accounts or apps that permit multi-service cross-posting are permitted so long as the posts are not violating any other Rule or Code principle.

Refusing Service:

At our discretion, the admins may ban or silence someone if we believe their presence will be disruptive or create an unpleasant or unwelcoming atmosphere, even if they have not violated the rules of the Wandering Shop. We encourage people to individually mute, block, and/or report accounts they don't want to see, but at our discretion, we may take the additional step of blocking or silencing someone instance-wide if we believe they will undermine the safe and welcoming space we're trying to maintain, wreck the vibe, or give the admins a headache.

Reporting

If you are being harassed, notice that someone else is being harassed, or have any other concerns, you may reach out to Proprietor or to any Moderator or Admin. They'll respond as promptly as they can.

We will respect confidentiality requests for the purpose of protecting victims of abuse. At our discretion, we may publicly name a person about whom we’ve received harassment complaints, or privately warn third parties about them. We will not name harassment victims without their affirmative consent.

Consequences

Participants asked to stop any harassing behavior are expected to comply immediately.

If a participant engages in harassing behavior, the admins may take any action they deem appropriate, up to and including expulsion from the wandering shop and identifying the participant publicly as someone about whom we've received complaints.

Be aware that not every user or post you see in your timeline is a member registered on The Wandering Shop. Users of The Wandering Shop itself are expected to adhere to this Code of Conduct. Users from other instances are not bound by our Code of Conduct, but we may silence or suspend them (thus limiting their visibility on the shop) if they are not contributing to the welcoming and inclusive atmosphere we wish to maintain.

1. Code of Conduct. All members of the Wandering Shop agree to read and abide by our Code of Conduct. These rules summarize the Code of Conduct (CoC) for reporting purposes. If reporting something that violates the CoC in a way not listed in these rules, select this option.
2. Harassment, threats, or aggressive behaviour are not permitted. Inciting actions against others, including in retaliation, is not permitted. This includes but is not limited to encouraging self-harm or sharing personal information that could result in an individual being targeted.
3. Wandering Shop does not tolerate promotion of fascist, white supremacist, violent or hateful ideology or symbolism. This includes but is not limited to Holocaust denial, Nazi symbolism, and anti-trans, misogynistic, antisemitic and/or racist harassment; including in usernames, avatars, and profiles.
4. Wandering Shop does not permit the willful or persistent promotion of misinformation, disinformation, or conspiracy theories. This includes, but is not limited to, bigoted conspiracy theories and misinformation about elections and vaccines.
5. On public timelines, Wandering Shop does not permit graphic sexual, violent, or otherwise disturbing images without a content/media warning. Also not permitted: gratuitous advertising, spam, and cross-posting/automated posting of content that is irrelevant or disruptive.
6. Wandering Shop does not permit sustained disruption of conversation, including on the local timeline, in hashtags, or in replies. Only use tags that are relevant to your posts, and do not disrupt conversation with excessive tags or replies. If you are asked to leave someone alone, leave them alone.
