A digital tree in a federated garden. A calm, welcoming place to talk about pretty much anything, but especially interested in technology, music, and films/TV.
What do I do here? Orchard is a Mastodon instance. Mastodon is a federated platform for microblogging.
What's federation? Federation refers to the platform's ability to communicate with other servers and platforms through a shared protocol, in this case ActivityPub. Basically, imagine a world where all of your social media apps were interconnected, and you could get content on your platform from a different one.
What tools do I have to protect myself from harassment? We want to make Orchard feel like a safe place to be. At least, relatively safe, in a social media context. If someone slips past Orchard's moderation, you have a range of tools to combat trolls and harassment on the platform. To stop seeing posts from someone, you have the ability to filter them, mute them, or block them completely. To limit the ability for you to be targeted, you have the options of opting out of discovery, hiding your social graph, or making your profile private. For each post, you can also change the visibility. You're also encouraged to report any bad actors to us.
Note: This is primarily an English and French-speaking instance. Users from all over the world speaking any language are welcome, however we are not able to efficiently tackle reports and offensive content in languages we do not speak. This does not mean we will not try with translation software, it just means we will be slower to respond.
