This search engine for Mastodon instances is based on a database that gets updated by our crawler every night (CET).

Instances are considered new for 30 days after they are discovered.

When an instance has not responded to our daily checks for more than 30 days it is no longer considered in statistics and searches and it gets checked only on the first of the month, rather than daily, until it possibly responds again, or until its last succesful check is one year old; in this latter case, from that moment it gets checked only on the first day of each year.

“Random ordering” of results varies daily.

Default search criteria reflect our fondness for a decentralized and egalitarian Fediverse and our attempt to exclude instances accepting fascist, racist, sexist, ableist, sovereignist, pro-nuclear and pedopornographic contents by marking them as noxious.

Welcome to SocialBC.ca

This instance is run by the non-profit, registered, Society of Open Social Servers of British Columbia (socialbc.org). If you live in British Columbia, Canada this is a regional Mastodon instance for you!

We are an X/Twitter and Corporate Media alternative connecting to thousands of other servers and over 14 million users on the Fediverse and #OpenSocialWeb and we can connect to Bluesky.

Membership

As soon as you sign up on SocialBC you are a 'non-voting' member of the Society of Open Social Servers of BC (SOSSBC). If you would like to support us financially please see the "How do we make this go" section below.

Any contribution greater than $20 in a year makes you a full voting member of SOSSBC. Note: To avoid conflicts of interest, elected officials and corporations are encouraged to contribute and be members of SOSSBC but are always non-voting members of the Society.

We are a public access server, there is no paywall or limitation on the general public seeing posts here through the website except for what users choose to keep private. Any Mastodon compatible app will also work with SocialBC.ca.

We have an emoticon for your community!

We have created emoticons based on the flags and logos of every municipality, town, village, First Nation and Band Council that we could find in BC. You can see them all in this thread. Users can invoke the emoticons by typing : portalberni : or : Tseshaht :. We also encourage the use of community hashtags like #yvr #kamloops or #wsanec to increase the visibility of our diverse communities.

How do I post into and follow people on Bluesky from socialbc.ca?

Make sure whoever you want to follow has enabled Fediverse sharing on their Bluesky (explained in next section below).

To post into Bluesky:

Go to the Bridgy Fed webpage and click on "Mastodon" and enter socialbc.ca in the "Mastodon instance" box.

You might be asked to login to socialbc.ca. Once that's done, you're connected and all your socialbc posts will be seen on Bluesky.

How Do You Make This Go (ie. Money)

SOSSBC and SocialBC.ca are completely run by volunteers but it does cost money to “keep the lights on”, you can see our financials so far here.

We will periodically publish information about the Society and the finances of SocialBC.ca so that you can see how things are going and how your contributions are used. As we grow, our hosting costs will grow as well. We want to be transparent about that growth and how we use the money we have.

Threads

SocialBC has made the decision to block connections (Federation) with Threads.net. This was done in response to the policy and moderation changes announced by Mark Zuckerberg in January 2025. Threads is also likely to soon be on the IFTAS list of blocked servers. We use the IFTAS service to automatically update block lists that protect our server and users from abusive and illegal content. The following is a quote from the IFTAS FediCheck update of January 15, 2024.

"We are aware of growing community concerns around Meta’s threads.net domain, which is approaching the 51% threshold for inclusion on the CARIAD list. If more of our observed servers choose to block this domain, it will likely cross the 51% and possibly the 66% threshold in the coming weeks, which may then be reflected on your server.

To accommodate varying approaches, we are temporarily withholding the domain from the list until February 17, 2025. If you wish to remain connected to threads.net, please disable automatic updates for your server before this date by visiting cariad.fedicheck.iftas.org and disabling automatic push to your server."

As an inclusive and proactive space, SocialBC has chosen to prioritize the health and safety of all current and future members and will block Threads.net as of 9AM January 20, 2025 until such time that policies at Meta change.

What Is This Place

Our intent is to create community driven, grassroots, #OpenSocialWeb spaces for all people that call British Columbia - or the First Nations territories it owes its existence to - home. This space is connected to Bluesky through services like Bridgy Fed.

Yes, we said "spaces"! In time, we can envision and would like to encourage groups and communities within British Columbia to create their own Mastodon/Fediverse spaces using this space as an example and possibly under the 'umbrella' of SOSSBC and socialbc.ca.

Moderation and General Outlook

This is a lightly moderated instance. We commit to be open and transparent on any moderation decisions. We expect people to be civilized. We do not condone or accept any violence or illegal behaviour and will block instances without warning that appear on Fediverse community block management lists like IFTAS. This is done both for your safety and protection but also to ensure we adhere to the local laws and regulations on hate speech and other online content.

We welcome all people and strive to make a safe space. We do not tolerate dogpiling, spamming, trolling, or other forms of online or offline harassment including racist, and other discriminatory content. We follow the Mastodon Server Covenant.

We do not limit people for expressing their views in ways that may be challenging but we strongly encourage people to use the "Content Warning" features built into Mastodon to protect others from unnecessary or unintended harm. Some simple guidelines for conduct are in the "Server Rules" below. We strongly encourage the use of alt-text for media, use @PleaseCaptionBot for helpful reminders!

We reserve the right to limit, suspend, or remove any account at any time without recourse.

Bots and Pseudonymous Accounts

Bots

People and organizations are welcome to use socialbc.ca to create automated accounts or "bots" for news, weather, emergency services, and other useful public information.

Some guidelines:

  • All bot accounts must have "This is a bot account" checked in its settings.
  • Posts from bot accounts must be "unlisted".
  • "Automatic Post Deletion" must be set to a maximum age of one month. (Pinned and DMs not included)

Pseudonyms or Parody Accounts

Pseudonymous accounts for activism, information, and entertainment are OK in general as are parody accounts but any account found to be in violation of expectations for civil behaviour, harassment, dogpiling, etc., or are found to be disseminating false or misleading information may face suspension.

First Nations and Indigenous Peoples

The people behind socialbc.ca and the Society of Open Social Servers of BC deeply acknowledge that we are conducting this endeavour on and for people on the Traditional and often un-ceded Territories of Indigenous Peoples in the colonial province of British Columbia, Canada on Turtle Island.

We open our arms with humility and respect to Indigenous members joining this space.

We welcome and would be honoured to have the participation and direct input of Indigenous members and communities in this space and in SOSSBC as well!

As part of our goal to promote the #OpenSocialWeb generally, we would like to offer to help Indigenous-led communities and groups create spaces like socialbc.ca for their own communities.

The greatest thing about the #Fediverse and the #OpenSocialWeb is that it emulates the human landscapes that we all live in as a network of social spaces.

Expanding SocialBC, SOSSBC, and the Open Social Web in BC

It's SOSSBC's goal to promote the use of non-corporate, community-driven, grassroots spaces.

To put it another way, our goal is not to be the one and only Open Social Web or Mastodon instance in BC for all people to use, but rather to be a stepping stone for people in different communities to find each other but also to find each other in the same community and perhaps in time create their own spaces in the Fediverse.

Community-run instances like this one often get too big to be manageable by volunteer teams so the best way to grow the Fediverse is with the proliferation of regional or interest based instances. We at socialbc.ca want to encourage that.

We see our mission not as one to take over everything, but to enable and empower others to create their own Open Social Web spaces in British Columbia.

We are a Mastodon community made primarily for the Sonic the Comic the Podcast hosts, listeners, pals, and mutuals.

Please note however that Speedlines isn't equipped to be a general purpose Mastodon community and we may not be able to accomodate a very large userbase in its youth.

  1. Diese Mastodon-Instanz wird als privates Hobby ohne Garantie für Verfügbarkeit betrieben. Es besteht kein Anspruch auf jederzeitigen funktionierenden Zugang zum Konto. Downtimes (Updates, Wartung, Migration etc) werden wir - soweit möglich - vorher ankündigen.

Why does it exist?

We are a mastodon instance for DJs of various kinds and related fields, be it in the club, radio, livestreaming, or mobile sound-systems.

This is a social space without ads, companies, and especially without algorithms. Do let the community know about your mixes, radio shows, and other endeavours, but be an active part of community too by engaging with others in an honest maner.

We take moderation seriously. We do our best to create a safer space for minority groups. See our Code of Conduct below.

This instance is currently run and moderated by luka. Let me know if you have any questions, issues or suggestions, or see inappropriate activity.

This server is run via masto.host, which takes great care of running the low-level sysadmin, backups, and is also an emergency contact. In case of shutting down, we guarantee at least 3 months warning, so members can transfer to another instance.

  • this is a safer space, not free-speech maximalist place. this means that we take extra care about all marginalized groups, be it based on gender, race, or disablity. be kind, check your privilege, etc. details below.
  • nazis, racists, TERFs, transphobes edge-lords and similar are not welcome
  • we expect from users a generous use of CW and almost obligatory ALT text (descriptions) to all media (if possible - see also about lived experiences below)
  • local timeline is a communal space which you should take care of well. therefore make sure you think well before you post public, and consider using unlisted as default

We want everyone to have a great time, feel welcome and to let cool ideas flow around. Giving everyone some guidelines helps you all to know what's up and how we can keep this place an enjoyable, fun and interesting place to be.

There's two parts:

  • Rules: Things that are probably obvious to most people that are hurtful or unpleasant.
  • Etiquette: Things you might not be aware of that help keep the space awesome for everyone.

Rules

This section covers stuff that is not okay to do here - generally because one way or another, it hurts or represses people.

These may not cover every situation, so moderators can still make decisions at their own discretion.

These apply to this instance and elsewhere on other instances, other social networks and IRL.

Your moderators will take any accusations seriously, and will handle them anonymously.

Groups of people that aren't welcome here

If you have the following or similar kinds of ideologies or affiliations, you are not welcome here and you will be immediately banned if found out:

  • Neo-fascism (White supremacy / White nationalism / Neo-nazi / Alt-right / Alt-light / Identitarian / Male supremacy / Manosphere)
  • Reactionary (GamerGate / Anti-feminism / Neo-reactionary)
  • Neo-feudalism ('Anarcho'-capitalism / 'Objectivism' / Right-wing Libertarians)
  • TERF, SWERF or otherwise anti-trans or anti-sex worker
  • Truscum, Transmed or other kinds of identity policing.
  • People who are generally phobic/shitty towards non-binary genders.
  • Religious fundamentalism or anti-abortion. (Other types of religion are A-OK!)

If you work in any capacity (whether as a direct employee or a contractor) for any of the following types of organisations, you aren't welcome here, and if you reveal yourself as such, you will be banned:

(This does not mean we will refuse legally valid requests for information, it just means that aside from this type of situation, you are not welcome here in any way.)

Apart from those listed, if you have any ideology that believes in - whether violently, non-violently or religiously - the repression of people based on race, gender identity, sexuality and so on, you are also not welcome here.

Ideologies or affiliations based on controlled counter-violence in opposition to oppression (like antifa/antifascism) are welcome here.

Actions and behaviours that aren't welcome here

This covers a lot of mostly obviously unpleasant stuff.

Hate speech

Hate speech results in an immediate ban. Here are some examples of what we mean:

Comments, imagery, memes or publications that demean, dehumanise, malign or otherwise hurt a person or a group of people based on certain characteristics or group status, including but not limited to:

  • Race
  • Sexuality
  • Gender identity, including trans and non-binary gender identities
  • Age
  • Body size/weight
  • Disability
  • Religion
  • Sex work
  • Kinks or fetishes
  • Certain personas or forms of identity (furries, otherkin, plural systems, etc.)
  • Poverty/lack of wealth

Saying things or things in a particular way, like:

  • Racial slurs, ableist slurs, etc.
  • Intentional misgendering (intentionally using pronouns or phrasing to refer to someone's gender incorrectly)

It's okay to criticise things like religions, but only as long as that isn't just a wedge/shield for bigotry (eg. using feminist concepts to malign all forms of Islam instead of rationally talking about the specific forms of Islam or Islamic communities which do have mysogyny issues).

Marginalised communities (like PoC or women) being fed up with systemic problems and complaining about certain groups' lack of understanding or action about certain issues (ie. white people, men) is not hate speech. If you're not a part of the problem, you don't need to see it as an attack. :)

Generally unacceptable behaviour

These result in an immediate ban:

  • Clearly being disrespectful or acting like an asshole.
  • Telling someone to or suggesting that someone should commit suicide, be killed, or die. (even jokingly)
  • Refusing to CW content that should be in a CW (see the Etiquette section), or refusing moderator requests to CW content.
  • Advertising or preaching (promoting your own work is fine; being paid to shill/advertise for someone else is not fine)
  • Making sex jokes or flirting with someone when they haven't specifically said that's okay on their profile.

Harassment and Threats

Any of these kinds of things will result in an immediate ban:

  • Intentionally sending posts to someone that are designed to distress or insult them.
  • Using posts, screenshots or out of context quotes to mock or make fun of someone else.
  • Submitting false reports against someone else.
  • Continuing to interact with someone after they have told you to stop.
  • Threatening to harrass, threatening to dox, threatening to DDoS, or any other kind of threat.
  • Sexual harassment or acting in a sexually predatory way.

Conspiracy theories, pseudoscience and scams

It's important that our server is a place for constructive ideas, and not ones that are used as weapons, tools of disinformation, or spreading information that can cause harm.

Some kinds of conspiracy talk and discussions of the occult and woo are fine, but these are examples of the kinds of things that are unacceptable here:

  • Anti-vaxxer
  • COVID denial/doomerism: ideologies normalizing the spread of COVID, rejecting risk mitigation such as masking and testing, etc.
  • Climate change denial
  • Flat earthers
  • NWO, Illuminati, Chemtrails, Pizzagate, etc.
  • Hate group conspiracy theories like Holocaust Denial.
  • Pseudoscience like Homeopathy, 'healing crystals', etc.
  • 'Creation Science' and other religious forms of pseudoscience.
  • Promoting MLMs (Multi-Level Marketing schemes) or Ponzi schemes.
  • Promoting, supporting, or using this instance to do business with cryptocurrency, NFTs, play-to-earn gaming, or the like. (Anti-cryptocurrency posting is permitted.)

Guerilla ontologies and similar things are absolutely fine.

Sexual content involving minors

Do not flirt with someone who is under 18.

Do not post illustrated imagery featuring sexualised depictions of people who appear to be underage. Even if there's something saying they are over 18, they should reasonably look like they are over 18.

Do not post erotica involving minors.

Child porn is absolutely not allowed.

Any of these will result in an immediate ban.

Etiquette

These are general things to be aware of if you use our instance. You may not be used to them, and that's okay! We're willing to help you if you stumble along the way.

If a moderator asks you to repost something with a CW or asks you to change or delete a post for a particular reason outlined in this section, it doesn't mean you're in trouble. You're just being given a friendly pointer so you can help make this space awesome for everyone 😄.

Local Timeline

(Mastodon has different 'timelines' that different people can see - the Local Timeline is a timeline everyone in this instance can see. You post to it by choosing 'Public' (the globe icon) in your post toolbar.)

We really want our Local Timeline to be an antidote to traditional social media posting; a more down to earth place where people talk about themselves and what they're up to.

  • Let everyone have space to share things. Be selective about your Local posts and avoid posting too many things at once.
  • Avoid posting lots of external links on the local timeline. We want everyone to share things about themselves, and reposting stuff from elsewhere can make the space feel impersonal.

Use CWs for sensitive content.

CWs (Content Warnings or Content Wrappers) are a really cool way for people to keep climate control over their Mastodon browsing experience. It's especially useful in these stressful times, but it's also useful if you or other people have particular mental health conditions or are just having a bad day.

You should CW a post when it contains any of the following topics, whether the content is good or bad. Feel free to add (+) for positive content, (~) for mixed content and (-) for negative content.

  • Political current events such as elections and government actions (normally abbreviated to 'pol' along with the country/region, ie. 'UKpol', 'DEpol', etc.)
  • Potentially triggering Mental Health topics (normally abbreviated to 'mh'). Many of our members come here to discuss their mental health journey, and we seek to be as welcoming and open as possible, but for the sake of other users: please CW references to self harm, suicide, helplessness and other moods and behaviours that may be contagious or trigger people in recovery
  • Alcohol ('alc') and drugs
  • Diet talk or weight loss Discussion of dieting, including any judgments about "healthy food" even if you're not counting calories, should be CW'd differently from "ooh yummy" types of food posts.
  • Food in general
  • Sexual themes or content
  • Violent themes or content, blood and gore
  • Themes or content about abuse
  • Common phobias (Like certain animals such as snakes and insects.)
  • Long posts or posts with multiple parts (please also use the 'unlisted' privacy setting for posts after the first in a thread, so that the local timeline doesn't get flooded)

Also CW images that have nudity or these areas of the body exposed:

  • A certain area around the nipples (and/or the nipples themselves). From the end of the ribcage to the bust line.
  • Anything less than what boxer briefs or shorts would cover around the groin area.

This applies to all bodies regardless of gender.

We don't want to ask anyone to CW their identities. We particularly don't want to ask marginalized people to CW their marginalization. We're not going to be hardline about the rules in cases where there are compelling reasons to frame what you're saying differently...

...but "this is important, so I won't CW" and "this is urgent, so I won't CW" are non-sequiturs - the importance and the urgency have nothing to do with whether that content is more accessible with a content warning.

Always write descriptions for your images.

Mastodon has an image description feature, meaning that you can attach text descriptions to the images you upload so the blind or visually impaired can understand what the image is.

There is never a time that this would not be potentially useful to someone.

Some tips for writing image descriptions:

Write:

  • Placement of objects
  • The kind of image it is (photo, painting, drawing, CG, chart, text, screenshot etc.)
  • Colours
  • People and animals
  • Placement of text
  • Emotions (ie. smiling)
  • General surroundings)
  • (Generally what is important to understanding the picture, or what the point of the picture is.)

Don't write:

  • Descriptions that are too detailed.
  • Details of the picture that would be obvious in the given context (like, you don't need to say that a face has two eyes, a nose and a mouth because you've said it's a face).
  • Details that aren't the point or the focus of the picture.
  • (Generally what isn't important to understanding the picture, or what the point of the picture is.)

Unfortunately, not all mobile apps do image descriptions, but just try your best!

Be explicit about region-specific posts.

Keep in mind that Mastodon has users from all over the world.

If you have a post (like advice or politics) that's only relevant to a certain part of the world, mention what part of the world it is for.

Avoid subtooting when you can.

Subtooting (like subtweeting) is talking about something someone else has said without talking to the person who said it directly.

This is a tempting thing to do (and sometimes an ideal thing to do) if you don't want to get into a particular situation, but it has a negative side effect if you're not careful. It can make the entire environment hostile because subtooting can make people unsure whether you might be talking about them or not.

Be careful when considering giving unsolicited advice.

We try to be respectful of the opinions and views of others. Often unsolicited advice or prosletyzing, while well intentioned, can never the less make a person feel like their beliefs, values, or experience are invalid. For this reason, you should err on the side of caution.

If you see something bad, tell your moderator(s).

Corporate social media like Twitter and Tumblr can often make people feel powerless to actually take people who behave badly out of the picture, and this can lead to an ecosystem where issues are taken out publicly, and they can create mobs that cause a lot of people stress and can also easily harm the wrong people.

Here, you have moderators who are willing and able to help you and investigate and deal with problems. Please don't post publicly about these issues, make a report or DM one of your local moderators.

Leave edgy humour and societal baggage at the door.

There are things you might be used to doing that you think are okay, but they actually hurt other people or make them feel unwelcome.

You'll need to keep in mind that these are not okay and you shouldn't do these kinds of things if you decide to make an account here.

Here are some examples:

  • Rape jokes
  • Making jokes at the expense of content warnings ('triggered' jokes).
  • Putting marginalised people in the position of having to defend or explain their marginalisation. It's your responsibility to do your own research.
  • Microaggressions (you can find some examples of what that kind of thing is here)
  • Using phrases similar to 'not all men...' when someone is just venting about something they've experienced. If you're not a part of the problem, then you don't need to see it as a personal attack.
  • Not using CWs properly (see the CW section above for guidance).

We'll help you if you genuinely make mistakes along the way, but please really try to keep them in mind.

Wir möchten, dass Ihr auf dieser Plattform grundsätzlich nett und fair miteinander umgeht und nur Inhalte veröffentlicht, die unter einer allgemeinen Auffasung den guten Sitten entsprechen.

Einige Dinge dulden wir allerdings nicht und bitten Euch, Beiträge und Nutzer zu melden, deren Beiträge den folgenden Kategorien zugeordnet werden können:

  • Stalking, Doxxing, Belästigung
  • Rassismus, Sexismus, Beschimfungen
  • Diskriminierung jeglicher Geschlechter, sexueller Auffassungen und Religionen
  • Rechte und linke Propaganda
  • Pornographie
  • Werbung, Spam

Weiterhin könnt ihr uns an andere Mastodon Instanzen melden, die gegen die bezeichneten Punkte verstoßen, so dass wir bei Bedarf die Schnittstelle zu diesen Instanzen kappen können.

Die Entscheidung, wie unsere Moderatoren in den bezeichneten Fällen verfahren und wie sie die Richtlinien auslegen, liegt ausschließlich bei ihnen. Beschwerden bitte an unser Team per PN.

Derzeit wird der Server einmal pro Nacht gesichtert und zur Sicherung der Konsistenz dafür kurzzeitig vom Netz genommen. In der Regel ist er nach wenigen Minuten wieder online.

  1. Be Kind! This is a place for everyone in the #RStats community. Be considerate that not everyone's experience is your experience.
  2. Make efforts to think about accessibility. Please add alt text and use PascalCase for hashtags to help people using screen readers.
  3. Do not harass anyone, participate in group harassment of anyone, or otherwise engage in personal attacks. Posting or threatening to post other people’s personally identifying information (“doxing”) constitutes harassment.
  4. Do not be intentionally antagonistic. A post or reply designed to provoke a confrontation is not acceptable.
  5. Do not post adult content, including pictures containing nudity, or unwelcome sexual attention (including sexualized comments or jokes).
  6. Do not post spam. Toots that are nothing other than a link and/or contain an inordinate number of hashtags are spam, as does any overly commercial self-promotion. (It is fine to toot about your own projects and share what you are excited to be working on — just keep the toot itself interesting).
