This search engine for Mastodon instances is based on a database that gets updated by our crawler every night (CET).
Instances are considered new for 30 days after they are discovered.
When an instance has not responded to our daily checks for more than 30 days it is no longer considered in statistics and searches and it gets checked only on the first of the month, rather than daily, until it possibly responds again, or until its last succesful check is one year old; in this latter case, from that moment it gets checked only on the first day of each year.
“Random ordering” of results varies daily.
Default search criteria reflect our fondness for a decentralized and egalitarian Fediverse and our attempt to exclude instances accepting fascist, racist, sexist, ableist, sovereignist, pro-nuclear and pedopornographic contents by marking them as noxious.

Custom CSS works at the instance level, so if you want to use you own custom CSS, you need to use add-ons like Stylus or Live CSS Editor. Please make sure you caption the images you upload. Image descriptions, also called alternative text or alt text, are text descriptions of an image. These descriptions support people who are blind, have low vision, use assistive technology, live in low-bandwidth areas, or want more context. The goal of writing image descriptions is to be clear and concise, while giving more context to your post. Here’s a list of recommendations for writing great image descriptions:
- Capture what's important
- Be succinct, clear, and detailed
- Be objective
- Write out or summarize text in images
- Watch out for acronyms and abbreviations
- Include the image type details
- Use regular sentence structure and letter casing
- Avoid redundant information

Media size & quality
Please reduce your images’ size and compress them before uploading. Mastodon automatically downscales images to 1.6 megapixels (enough for a 1280×1280 image) 8.3 megapixels (enough for a 3840×2160 image)* and compresses JPEG and PNG with a quality of 90**, but you can often get much better compression by using free tools like Squoosh (web app), TinyJPG (up to 20 images, works for PNG),

To give you an idea – we do not accept (among other things): racism, homophobia, transphobia, sexism, ableism and other forms of discrimination, harassment, trolling, hate speech, (sexual) abuse of minors and adults (also not virtual), militarism, nationalism and right-wing populism, right-wing and religious extremism, colonialism (incl. This Mastodon server is the twin server of Todon.eu. They are both run and moderated by a small collective of volunteers. We accept all languages, although English, Dutch, German and Spanish are the most popular on this server. Moderation is in English and Dutch, but we are also fluent in machine translations.

- Column backgrounds are not as dark as the new defaults in Mastodon 4.3 and dropdownmenu transparency is disabled. This reduces eyestrain for various people.
- The boost icon is green instead of purplish. This makes it better regognizable for some people.
- Tangerine UI, Tangerine UI (Purple), Tangerine UI (Cherry) and Tangerine UI (Lagoon)

- Automatically switches from light to dark based on your system or browser preference.

General guidance on posting and participating in Mastodon.world
Moderation Principles
Reported content will be assessed on a balance of probabilities by the moderators. In other words, whether it is more likely than not that the content violates one or more of these rules. Moderators will suspend an account from mastodon.world when the user demonstrates that they have breached any rule several times, or if their content (including profile description) suggests that they are likely to continue to break the rules. The number of breaches leading to suspension is deliberately not defined. In egregious cases, one breach can result in suspension of the user account.
The moderation team takes a pragmatic approach to every report they receive - if they feel that a problematic post isn’t explicitly a breach of any of these rules but is inappropriate for Mastodon.world, the post will likely be removed. Users who repeatedly post problematic content or otherwise are seen by the moderators as a negative, disruptive presence in our community can be removed at the discretion of the moderation team, even if those posts or the user did not explicitly violate our rules.
Donations & Finances
Musicworld.social is run by @ruud, who also pays the bills.
Since the November 2022 user influx, those bills have gone up quite steeply.

This Code contains the rules and principles for participating in the Musicworld.social community. - Provide a friendly, safe, and welcoming environment for everyone regardless of gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, disability, personal appearance, body size, race, ethnicity, age, religion, nationality, political affiliation, or other similar characteristic.
- Create a supportive community, where people freely share their passions and are excited and positive about each other’s successes.
- Protect our community from harassment, malicious or illegal content and from individual members whose goals are to disrupt our community and promote their own self-interest at the expense of the community.
Principles that Guide us
- We are not a free speech zone. This CoC lays out expected standards of conduct and behavior. You cannot say or post anything that violates these rules or principles and remain a member of our community. You must follow this CoC. If you are looking for something else, please do. It is not here.
- The Moderators are not morality or thought police. Moderators are guided by this Code of Conduct. Post what you want, if what you post follows these rules, principles and the goals outlined above. Not every member of the community will appreciate controversial or explicit posts so use Content Warnings very liberally. We use Content Warnings so community members themselves can decide whether they want to see or engage with a post that may be controversial or explicit.
- Bullies, trolls and disruptors are not welcome in Musicworld.social. We will moderate accordingly.
- This is a voluntary community. You chose to be here. When you choose to join, you have implied that you agree with this Code of Conduct and will follow it.

- Do not post about inflammatory, controversial subjects without a Content Warning. Ideally, you would not post about inflammatory subjects at all. However, it may be acceptable to do so in some cases, but it is never acceptable to post inflammatory content without hiding the content behind an appropriate Content Warning.
- Do not post any type of nudity without a Content Warning.
- Regarding Spam: We are not your free advertising platform. If you are here only to sell your products or services, you will be removed. Occasional posts of commercial links are OK, but when the vast majority of a user's posts are commercial in nature, we regard the account as a Spam account. Moderators will evaluate reports of Spam on a case by case basis.
- Do not engage in name calling, ad hominem attacks, or any other uncivil behaviour. Criticize ideas, never people.
- Do not report every post that upsets you. Please report posts that violate our rules but for others that you may find distasteful, or just don’t like, use the tools available to you. You can block the user or mute the conversation.

- No posts or links to content supporting, featuring, or promoting hate groups, terrorism, mass violence or calls to violence.
- No posts or comments supporting or promoting QAnon related content or similarly disproven conspiracy theories. Moderators have sole discretion to decide if a post violates this rule. Birds are real. The Earth is round. Get over it.
- No posts or links featuring sexualized depictions of minors, whether photographic, written, drawn, anthropomorphic or animated.
- No pornography featuring depictions of rape or non-consensual violence.
- All other pornographic, erotic or NSFW content, whether photographic, written, drawn or animated, must be marked with a Content Warning.
- No racism.
- No visual content depicting executions, murder, suicide, dismemberment, visible innards, excessive gore, or charred bodies. All other violent imagery requires a Content Warning.
- No visual content depicting animal abuse. All other posts related to animal abuse require a Content Warning.
- No posting of malicious links.
- No Spam (see Code of Conduct above).
- No threats, bullying or attacks on an individual or group.
- No encouragement or promotion of self-harm.
- No accounts that impersonate anyone else unless clearly marked as such for the purpose of parody.
- No Hate Speech. Hate speech is defined as derogatory posts or links targeting any individual or group based on race, mental or physical disability, religion, gender identity, sex, nationality, age, class or sexual orientation.
