About tldr.nettime is an instance for artists, researchers, and activists interested in exploring the intersections of technology, culture, and politics.
It has grown out of
nettime-l, one of the longest-running mailing lists on the net with a focus on the 'cultural politics of the internet'.
nettime.orgServertldr.nettime is based on
Hometown, a fork of Mastodon. It's compatible with the wider fediverse, but it also offers two tweaks we hope will help make it particularly engaging and fostering a shared sense of place:
- The character count per message is higher — 2000 chars at the moment.
- You can choose whether your post is public or visible only on tldr's local timeline
We try to run a stable server, but this is a community effort, so we don't provide guarantees for uptime.
FundingThe server is run by care and free labor of everyone involved. To cover infrastructure cost, we need donations. If you value this instance and have some money to contribute, please do so.
The best way is to send money directly to our bank account.

Guidelines Please read the information below before signing up to and/or using tldr.nettime. If you don’t agree to the terms set out here, please do not use this server. It's that simple.
We have a commitment to critical analysis, experiments, mutual care, diversity, and anti-discriminatory practices. The instance is lightly moderated, on an account basis. In other words, we will ban accounts that don't share our commitment. The community will give itself more detailed rules if necessary.
Language: There are no language rules on this server. English is de facto the main language, but feel free (even encouraged!) to post in other languages.
Content warnings: We do not require a content warning (CW). However, we ask that you be kind and considerate: include CWs if you believe your post may be distressing to others.
Bots: Bots are allowed. Try to make them fun.
Cross-posting: Cross-posting from Twitter, RSS, etc. is fine (and even encouraged if it helps you become more active here).
Topics: You do not need to remain permanently "on topic". The point of this community is to gather like-minded people who will make posts that are interesting to each other. But that doesn't mean that everything has to be about the 'cultural politics of the internet' (whatever that is....). This is a community to connect people, not enforce specific topics of discussion.
Self-promotion: There are many writers, artists, and other cultural producers on this server, and we are more than happy for you to promote your work from your personal account. We request, however, that you do so in a tasteful and not spammy manner.
