hex.st is a coven in the big world of people-owned social networks.
(In more occult words: a Mastodon instance, part of the Fediverse.)

This space is intended for discussions about anything and everything, and in particular topics at the intersection of art, play, community and technology.

We welcome anyone as long as they share a few core values.
To state things more explicitly: we don't accept everyone and we don't tolerate everything. The driving principle behind hex.st is to create a warm and safe environment for its inhabitants. To enable this, a modicum of decency and kindness is required from members, and they must follow a few rules designed to protect a healthy and inclusive atmosphere. If you object to this in any way, the rest of the Fediverse awaits you!

What are the core values of the hex.st community?

While a definite list would be impossible to document, here are the broad strokes:

  All humans deserve equal rights and opportunities; empathy and solidarity mean the most privileged ought to support those who need it. Black lives matter. Trans lives matter.

  We reject ideologies that lead to the impoverishment, exploitation and degradation of the most vulnerable: fascism, imperialism, capitalism, longtermism, religious extremism. We reject entities that exist to uphold these ideologies, including the police and armed forces, tech oligarchies, the church.

  Questioning power and critical thought are equally important to navigate a world submerged in data, but we must be wary of conspiracy theories and schemes designed to exploit or radicalize. The planet is not flat and vaccines do not contain microchips. Climate change is an urgent threat that humanity must face now.

  In case it wasn't clear, this is not a 'politics-free zone' – demanding that political discussion be silenced is a privileged stance that only furthers the status quo. We believe that every part of our lives is influenced by the politics and policies that form the social structure we exist in, and as such it is our responsibility to examine them and work towards their betterment.

Why this name?

"hex.st" is meant to evoke, at once: the comradeship of modern (queer) occultism; the sometimes fascinating intertwining of geometry and mathematics; the reclaiming of the web for deeply personal aesthetics; the (a)symmetry of game spaces. (You don't have to understand or agree with any of this mumbo-jumbo to join!)

1. Be respectful. All humans are deserving of respect — except for those whose ideologies would deny others of their humanity.
2. No discrimination or harassment of any kind; this notably includes targeting someone's body or cognition, age, social or cultural background or class, race, gender identity, sexual orientation, mental or physical state.
3. No ads, crypto, nfts. Manual promotion of your own products or services is tolerated, as long as it's not AI-generated.
4. Use content warnings liberally to hide any sensitive content, including any explicit imagery (nudity, gore), food, content related to depression, mental illnesses or disorders. Also use content warnings for spoilers.
5. Do not share content that isn't yours under the pretense that it is; always credit authors.
6. Use your profile metadata to indicate your pronouns – including lack of preference.
7. Trust that others members share the community's core values; following that, aim to clear up misunderstandings before assuming the worst.
