This website is part of the Fediverse and runs Mastodon.

Why this server exists

In November 2022 uncertainty regarding Twitter's future caused a large number of users to migrate to Mastodon. This influx was huge, and caused many Mastodon servers to get swamped and fall over. The survivors had to scale rapidly, from architechture aimed only at very small instances.

This server is run in a way which allows it to grow and flex with changing user patterns. It's been designed to be done right, to make sure software is always up to date, that the service is reliable and secure.

Who can use this server

Anyone who agrees to the server rules is able to use this server. For any questions or clarifications please email admin@base.lc.

Content and Moderation

The current low user count means this server is very friendly, we've had very little need to moderate.

Guiding principles

• The server rules are the values from which policy will be derived.
• Any action taken will have justification and due transparency.
• Moderation exists to remove violating content. Hate speech and harrassment are not tolerated.
• Profiles may post NSFW content, but this always needs to be done with content warnings.

Where this instance is hosted

This server is hosted in Ireland using Amazon's AWS. This is very stable and secure infrastructure that typically powers enterprise applications.

Technical

The instance runs on the ECS platform. This clustering allows the rapid scaling of individual mastodon services, and significantly reduces the chance of downtime occurring.

The main database for this site uses RDS, which facilitates backup and recovery.

Who pays the bills, why is this free

The server admin pays the bills as a way to contribute back to the open source community which created and released this software.

1. Be respectful - Don't post content, or use features in a manner likely to make others uncomfortable or risk causing harm.
2. Don't be a criminal. Do not post illegal content, do not link to illegal content, do not imply illegal content.
3. Use Content Warnings - CWs allow you to hide sensitive content.
4. Do not abuse this service - Don't file malicious reports, don't try to hack the website or make it do something it's not meant to do.
